4 A Not So Senior Moment By Martha Thorn Kathy Conaway s parents and two older sisters were born in Austria. She was born in Withington in Great Britain. When she was 4 years old, the family moved to East Orange, N.J., where she graduated from high school. She went on to earn a Bachelor s Degree in Psychology from American University in Washington, D.C., and a Master s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Kathy spent most of her professional career in four different local Departments of Social Services in Maryland, starting as a front line social worker and then advancing to supervisor and finally administrator. She provided a variety of services during those years, including Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, Services to Aging Adults, Foster Care, Kinship Care, and Adoption. To Kathy, working with clients who otherwise might not be able to afford services was true social work. After retiring from state service, she spent almost 10 years as a contractual trainer for the University of Maryland School of Social Work, training local Department of Social Services staff around the state. The son of an American father and German mother, Ed Conaway was born in Soerabaja in the Dutch East Indies, then a Dutch Colony, now Indonesia. The family returned to the U.S. from Europe shortly before the outbreak of World War II, and settled in Glens Falls, N.Y. While his father worked at the General Electric plant and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, N.Y., Ed attended Roman Catholic parochial schools, and earned a BA degree from Union College where he also played baseball and basketball. After graduating from Union College, Ed enlisted in the Army, serving in a Special Services Signal Unit for most of his active duty time. After fulfilling his enlistment commitment he was honorably discharged in California where he lived with his family, pursuing a career in finance and contracts management in the Defense industry. He moved back East in the late 70s to accept a position with the General Electric Company Missile and Space Division Advanced Requirements Planning Operation in Valley Forge, PA, where he remained until the early 80s when he accepted a position with International Controls Corp., as VP of Finance for the company s subsidiary Eastern Group. In this assignment he was responsible for the company s U.S. government and international trade financial operations. Ed noted that during this period he experienced some of the most challenging, and exciting times of his career. He came to appreciate the contribution of other cultures to the world we live in and geo-political realities of global co-existence through first-hand personal and business relationships with foreign government representatives and local businessmen in Western Europe (Sweden, Greece, England, Ireland), the Middle East (Iraq, Iran and Israel), South America (Chile, Bolivia, Columbia and Ecuador) and the Far East countries of Singapore, India, Malaysia, Thailand and Japan. In 1992 Ed created an Employee Stock Ownership Trust (ESOT) as a means to acquiring an underperforming division of a client company that provided participating employees with a vested interest in the business through the ESOT Plan as a vehicle that would, over time, enable the employees to become shareholders in the company. The company was renamed All American Environmental Services, Inc. Ed, as the primary investor and majority shareholder, became President and CEO and remained in that position until mid-2013 when he sold his interest back to the Trust. From 1992 until 2003 the company experienced a three-fold growth in sales revenue by expanding its services from only basic OSHA employee safety training limited to small industrial businesses and local fire departments, to hands-on focused full service training and consulting services addressing hazardous waste site management and emergency response operations involving hazardous and toxic material spills and airborne release incidents marketed to a broad range of federal and state government agencies and industrial and overseas clients. The company s largest clients included Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (METRO), NASA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (various Districts including Puerto Rico), U.S. Coast Guard, Hess Oil Company Refining (Virgin Islands), Shell Oil Company (Holland), U. S Army Aberdeen Proving Ground, U.S. Army Fort Meade, General Electric Company, and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. Page 4

5 Kathy and Ed were married 24 years ago at sunset on a dune on Nantucket Island. They have a blended family consisting of Ed s three sons and five grandchildren who all live in Pennsylvania, and Kathy s daughter and two grandchildren, who just recently moved a block away in Arundel on the Bay. Ed coached Little League, Youth Baseball League and the High School Ski Team and was an assistant Boy Scout Master while his sons were growing up. Kathy and Ed both worked hard as they raised their children but they also enjoyed life. One of their shared pleasures is traveling. Kathy has visited Austria, France, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and a few islands in the Caribbean. That was before Ed, she laughs. With Ed, she has explored England, Scotland, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo and Vancouver, British Columbia. They have driven across the United States twice. While visiting Vancouver, they fell in love with the city and its people and lived there part-time for six years. As a member of the National Ski Patrol, Ed was a member of the ski patrol for the FIS World Cup Skiing Competitions at the Cypress Bowl in Vancouver in In 2010 he was a volunteer emergency services Team Leader at the 2010 Winter Olympics hockey competition in Vancouver. Both Ed and Kathy volunteered for the 2010 Winter Paralympics, also in Vancouver, where Kathy was a host at the sledge hockey competition. These experiences have provided them with some of their most cherished memories. For three years until 2017 Ed was a volunteer kayak guide and instructor at Anne Arundel County s Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary on the Patuxent River. Additionally, for seven years, until moving to Arundel on the Bay, he was the President of the Holland Point Citizens Association, located on the Bay in South County. Kathy and Ed continue to fill some of their time volunteering. Kathy is the Volunteer Coordinator at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation s Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis and both Kathy and Ed have volunteered at the Foundation s special annual events such as Bands in the Sand and Burgers and Brew. Their volunteering for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation is so much fun they don t consider it work. How much work is it to be on a beach, eating food, listening to music and directing people where to park their dinghies as they come ashore for a beach party, Kathy asks, or to man a booth distributing Smith Island cake to people visiting CBF s Clagett Farm? Kathy and Ed are also active at the. Kathy volunteers at the front desk, takes classes, and occasionally fits in a Scrabble game. Ed started as a student in a jazz class and then two years ago volunteered to facilitate the class when the originator, Nat Martin, moved to the West Coast. Ed says it s a labor of love and our group is terrific to be with every Friday. We have one goal: have fun! Since moving to Arundel on the Bay Ed has been a Director of the AOTB Property Owners Association, and the Project Manager of the community s Living Shoreline Restoration Program. Ed remains an active ski patroller as a member of the Double H Ranch Ski Patrol at Lake Luzerne, NY, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. The Ranch provides a residential adaptive athlete winter sports program centered around skiing for children and teenagers, who are disabled due to physiological, neurological and/or developmental issues, such as autism, visual impairment, autoimmune disorders, etc., at no cost to the student, parent/caregiver, and siblings while in the program. In addition to traveling, Kathy and Ed also enjoy bike riding and kayaking. Kathy and Ed jointly promoted the construction and installation of kayak/canoe storage racks in the Arundel on the Bay community park, now in place for use by community residents. Kathy continues to manage the kayak racks. As strong advocates of women s issues, Kathy and Ed participated in the Women s March on Washington in They attended the March for Our Lives on March 24, in support of the children who were asking for stricter gun laws. Kathy has also participated in anti-war and civil rights demonstrations over the years. Kathy and Ed are looking forward to a future that s just as fun, interesting, exciting and fulfilling as their past. Page 5
