1 President s Message Bruce Roome, City of Arvada May 2018 Hello Colorado Clerks! On the clerk s education front it s now May and time to really ramp things up. May 19 th May 23 rd is the IIMC Annual Conference in Norfolk, Virginia. Last I heard there are 26 Colorado Clerks attending the event. On Sunday night, May 20 th, we are going to all meet for dinner at one of the many great (I m assuming) restaurants that are within walking distance of our hotel. On Tuesday evening the Region VIII Directors are hosting a dinner for all Region VIII members. I plan to go and I hope many of the Colorado Clerks do as well; I don t want to get lonely. Just as soon as we are done with that, it seems like we are back at it with the CML conference the week of June 18 th. At that conference Dawn Quintana (Longmont) and Robin Eaton (Wheat Ridge) will host a class on liquor law changes over the past several years. CML is nice enough to give us a table along with all of the other vendors, and our CMCA Vice President Lisa DelPiccolo and I are going to man that and talk to as many different Mayors and Managers as we can, really spread the CMCA word. We will have a CMCA Business Meeting at the conference on Thursday, June 21 st at 3:15 pm. At the end of that week on Friday, June 22 nd and Saturday, June 23 rd is the CMCA Masters Academy. Next up is the CMCA Clerks Institute at Regis University in northeast Denver. The 2017 Institute was a HUGE success and had around 90 attendees! We are hoping for more of the same as this will be held July 7 th through July 13 th. For those of you clerk s interested in attending but unsure of funding make sure to check out our Scholarship Committee Chair s Meghan Martinez s (Frederick, CO) article this month on how to secure funding to attend. As soon as that is complete we do get a breather for a couple of months before our 2 nd Annual CMCA Conference in Colorado Springs, October 17 th through October 19 th. There are also quite a few PDO offerings all throughout this time frame as well, make sure to check the CMCA website for those! 10 10 Congratulations Brenda Brenda Armijo, CMC Brenda s career with the City of Pueblo began in 1993 as a part-time Clerk Typist for the Municipal Court. In 1995 she accepted a full-time position in Municipal Court and, in 1998, was promoted to Court Technician. In 2003, she was promoted to Senior Clerk Typist for the Department of Planning and Community Development. Brenda held several positions within the Planning Department including Senior Clerk Typist, Land Use Technician, and Administrative Technician. Brenda was appointed Deputy City Clerk in June 2015 and since November 2017 has been serving as Acting City Clerk. Brenda is a graduate of Pueblo Community College and graduated Magna Cum Laud in 2014 with dual Associates Degrees in Business Management and General Studies. She earned her Certified Municipal Clerk designation in April Brenda married her husband, John, in 1997 and together they have a combined family of three grown children and five grandsons. When not working, Brenda enjoys reading, spending time with family, camping, and traveling. Spotlight Colorado Edgewater Lenore Gonzales Pedroza The City of Edgewater is nestled between the cities of Denver, Wheat Ridge and Lakewood. Edgewater offers a unique small town atmosphere within minutes of the downtown Denver area. The community provides a quality of life enjoyed by past and present generations. The City is currently building a much needed City Hall Building at 18 th and Harlan St. that will house the City Administration Offices, Edgewater Police Department, Jefferson County Library, and a new Recreation Facility. Negotiations are currently underway for a new retail development at 20 th and Depew. It is too soon to say what will happen there but the community is anxious to get things developed in an area that has been vacant for decades. It will be a wonderful addition to Edgewater! Lenore Gonzales Pedroza, City Clerk for the City of Edgewater, was born and raised in the Northwest Denver area. She is married, with 4 children, ages 33, 31, 29, 26, and 2 grandbabies ages 5, 1, plus one on the way. Now that they are empty nesters, Lenore and her husband love to travel. Lenore has worked roughly 25 years in local government, the past 8 years assisting the City Clerk in the City of Sheridan. She feels fortunate to have worked with a long time City Clerk who still offers her knowledge and expertise. Lenore received her CMC in 2013, thanks to a City Manager who believed, supported and encouraged her. It was a rough transition, but now, having completed the first year as City Clerk Lenore realizes there much more to learn, adding It is a never ending learning process. All and all, I have so much to be grateful for. Life is GOOD!

11 Town of Mountain View On August 8, 1904, a petition containing fifty-eight signatures to incorporate as the town of Mountain View was filed in Jefferson County Court. On September 6, 1904 the election for incorporation was held at the L.Hanawall Store, 4301 Sheridan Boulevard. With fifty-eight ballots in favor and forty-eight ballots against the proposal, the Town of Mountain View was established. During the gold rush years, the land of the present site of Mountain View was owned by the Yule family, who eventually moved to the Crystal River Valley on the Western Slope in Gunnison County. In 1879 John Brishen Walker ( ) purchased 1,200 acres of land in the Berkeley area for $1,000. He added to the land parcel until he acquired 1,600-1,700 acres which he then named Berkeley Farm. Walker and Dr. Will Bell, a British investor, grew alfalfa on Berkeley Farm until late Eventually, Walker sold the land for $325,000 to a Kansas City syndicate who hired the investment firm of Carleton Ellis and John McDonough to develop a new suburb. The new development was named the Berkeley Annex which extended from Sheridan Boulevard west to Fenton Street and 41st Avenue north to 44th Avenue. Ellis and McDonough secured Plat T3S, R69W on December This area became Mountain View, Colorado. Mountain View became a home-rule municipality in 1972 with a Mayor-Council form of government. All Council members are elected at large. The Town Council meets the second Monday of the month at 6:30 PM at the Town Hall located at 4176 Benton Street. Thanks to the dedication of former Mayor Pro-Tem Patricia Lilliston, the Little Free Library was installed and located to the north of town hall. This small community has a playground and gazebo used daily by its residents, both young and old, along with staff of the town. 11 Sarah Albright, Town Clerk/Treasurer I have been the Town Clerk/Treasurer since March 2015 and have been through two elections and find it fascinating to be a part of those transitioning from citizen to elected official and back to citizen. This is a very quaint, charming town nestled in the middle of the metro area.
