3 The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a 12-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 98 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, 159 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. 4 Academic Support Academic Advisement Each Western student has their own academic advisor within their department of study. Your advisor will put you in the best position to graduate, as well as line up valuable applied learning and research opportunities. In addition, the Western Athletics Department has its own compliance and academic coordinator who serves as a direct liaison between the student-athlete and academic faculty to ensure each athlete has the resources they need to succeed. Center for Academic Support The Center for Academic Support provides one-on-one and small group tutoring for most courses on campus. Located on the northeast corner of the Hearnes Center, the center consists of group study spaces and a large open area for students to receive tutoring or work independently. The center also offers free tutoring in math, writing, specific courses, reading and study skills. In addition to these services, students have access to online assistance, Supplemental Instruction (SI), and workshops sponsored by the center. Athletics Mentor Program Student-athletes that need additional academic support participate in the athletics mentoring program. The program, which is facilitated through the Center for Academic Support, provides each athlete with a mentor who provides one-onone attention on all facets of college life. Fairview is one of the oldest public courses in Northwest Missouri, established in The rolling fairways, large mature trees and hazards make this 18-hole course a challenge for players of all skill levels. Fairview Golf Course Fairview offers a variety of services such as a driving range, practice putting green, short game & bunker practice area, PGA instruction, snack bar, pro shop and clubhouse facilities. The Course Situated on over 200 acres among the rolling hills of Northwest Missouri, Fairview golf course is a public, 18 hole course measuring over 6300 yards. Fairview offers large, undulating greens, tree lined fairways and plenty of water to challenge all skill levels. 10 Summer Home of KC Chiefs MWSU, SUMMER HOME OF THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS On July 30, 2010, months of planning paid off as the Kansas City Chiefs opened year one of a five-year agreement to hold training camp on the Missouri Western State University campus. Thousands of Chiefs fans from all over the country converged on St. Joseph during the three weeks. The camp not only provided a great place for the Chiefs to train in front of their fans, but valuable and unlimited exposure for MWSU, the facilities and the City of St. Joseph. The Chiefs trained on the bermuda grass practice fields as much as possible, only practicing inside the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex in the event of severe weather. We believe that the return of the training camp to the state of Missouri will have a positive impact on everybody involved, said Chiefs Chairman of the Board Clark Hunt. Our football team is very excited to be so close to home preparing for the season and in what are truly state-of-the-art facilities. 11 Walking Tour of the GISC welcome TO THE griffon indoor SPORTS COMpLEX On July 21, 2010, the dreams of past, present and future Griffons nationwide came true as the newly named Griffon Indoor Sports Complex was completed and officially opened with a dedication ceremony. The facility serves as the new home for Griffon Football and the summer training camp home for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Facility features a full 100-yard field turf indoor field, a state-of-the-art locker room which can accommodate up to 120 players, coaches offices, weight training room, meeting rooms, a state-of-the-art theatre, equipment room and athletic training room. The facilities available to Griffon student-athletes rival those of any collegiate or professional sports organization. Right: This views looks back from the coaches office suite toward the building s lobby. The front lobby of the building looks out at Spratt Stadium and the newly named Clark/Shields Plaza in honor of Dirck Clark and Charlie Shields. These two men were instrumental in bringing the Chiefs Training Camp to St. Joseph and securing the funding for the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex. The 120-seat KCP&L Theater allows the Griffon football team to hold full team meetings, or, with the use of a partition, the ability to split the room and have a separate offensive and defensive meeting at the same time.this room is eqiupped with state-of-the art audio visual equipment, including two large projection televsion screens and surround sound. The theater is located just across the hall from the football locker room and training room. Left: The 5,500 square-foot Herzog Strength Training Center is located adjacent to the indoor field. The latest technology in Hammer Strength Equipment logoed with Griffon decals is available for the exclusive use by Griffon student-athletes. The views above and below show the spacious pro quality training room connected to the locker room. Ample taping stations, traning tables and other eqiupment essential to the health of student-athletes are all included in this area. A triage area is located in the rear of the room along with two hyrdotherapy pools below. This spacious conference room sits directly across the hallway from the football offices. This area will allow the football staff and other members of the Griffon Athletics Department a great space to conduct meetings and other group activities. Right: This wide view of the indoor field portion of the complex displays the spaciousness of the facility. The field itself is regulation size and is an exact replica of the Griffon game field. The field also includes markings for soccer and netting hanging from the ceiling to allow the Griffon softball, baseball and golf teams to conduct practices and for other Grifon teams to condition. The facility is climate controlled for comfortable practice conditions 365 days a year.

In the agreement which now year, Heartland Regional will provide medical/sup- Myron Unzicker Kate Esely Dr. Tom Alderson enters its sixth Medical Center port services to Missouri Western Athletics teams. Terms of the agreement include medical services provided by Dr. Thomas Alderson, MD. Heartland will also provide a complete multi-specialty, pre-participation physical examination for all student-athletes, ambulance service, physical therapy services and other such medical services that are necessary for an NCAA intercollegiate athletics program. Dr. Alderson has served as a team physician at Missouri Western for six years and has a rich history of service to both the University and the St. Joseph community. Gary Hazelrigg continues to be the Sports Medicine Coordinator for Heartland Regional Medical Center and coordinates services to Western. Hazelrigg has previous ties to Western Athletics, serving as an assistant professor and head athletic trainer for the university during the infancy of the athletics department. On campus, the Griffon Sports Medicine Program is led by Head Athletic Trainer Myron Unzicker ATC, Assistant Athletic Trainer Kate Esely ATC and Athletic Training and Rehabilitation Coordinator Becky Johnson ATC. Together, the Sports Medicine Team has more than 50 years of athletic training experience, and provides services to more than 230 Griffon student-athletes in 10 sports.

13 Head Coach Jim Perry Head Men s Golf Coach - Jim Perry jmlperry65@att.net Perry, a graduate of Midland Lutheran College with a BS in teaching. He earned his masters from Northwest Missouri State. Perry was employed by the St. Joseph School District for 32 years. He was a teacher in the Business Education Department and coached three different sports. During his time at Central High School he was an assistant in football for nine years and coached men s and women s basketball for 25 years. His golf program at Central produced nine top three positions including three State Championships. While at Western, his team has won one conference championship and has been in the upper half of the MIAA. They have also qualified for the Regional Tournament the eight of the last ten seasons.

33 President Vartabedian and AD Dave Williams President Dr. Robert A. Vartabedian Dr. Robert Vartabedian began his tenure at Western on July 1, Dr. Vartabedian succeeded Dr. James Scanlon, who officially retired June 30, 2008, after serving as president for seven years. Since coming to Western, Dr. Vartabedian has overseen the construction of Remington Hall that was completed in December 2009, and the renovation of Agenstein Hall that will be completed in December He has taken on a campus outdoor project, including three new pond fountains, building signs and a new entrance sign. A new residence hall will be completed in Fall Dr. Vartabedian was also one of the campus team members to secure the Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Western, beginning in the summer of That project included the construction of a new Griffon Indoor Sports Complex. Western will also open a new Spring Sports Complex in Spring In Fall 2010, Western had its sixth staright year of record enrollment (6,134). Dr. Vartabedian served as vice president for academic affairs at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) in Portales, N.M., since In that role, he was chief academic officer for a university with a total enrollment of about 9,500. He oversaw re-accreditation efforts in six departments. The university s 2007 evaluation by the Higher Learning Commission/North Central Association was accepted without any deficiencies and was showcased as a model application. Dr. Vartabedian was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. from 1999 to 2005, serving eight months as interim vice chancellor for academic affairs in As dean, he oversaw 14 academic departments and four centers. As interim vice chancellor, he was the chief administrator for all academic programs for the 8,400 students enrolled. Dr. Vartabedian graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts in speech communication from California State University, Fresno, Calif. in He received a master of arts in speech communication from Wichita State University, and a doctorate in communication from the University of Oklahoma. He and his wife, Dr. Laurel Vartabedian, have two children: Rob, and daughter-in-law, Audrey, of Amarillo, Texas and Sarah, of Austin, Texas; and one grandson. Athletics Director Dave Williams Dave Williams became Western s fifth Athletics Director in March Since joining Western, he has overseen improvements to the visitor side of Spratt Memorial Stadium, including new bleachers that hold more than 2,000 and a concessions/rest room building. He was also on the team that secured the Kansas City Chiefs summer training camp at Western, which included construction of a 118,000 square-foot indoor sports complex for Western s use the rest of the year when camp is not in session. A new spring sports complex is underway, also, so that the Griffon baseball will now play their home games on campus, starting in spring In 2010, Western and the City of St. Joseph co-hosted national championships for both NCAA Divsion II women s basketball and softball. The basketball championship will return to the city in Prior to coming to Western, Williams was the Athletics Director at University of Wisconsin-Parkside, a position he had held since Before that, he had held positions as head men s golf coach and top assistant basketball coach. In , he served as president of the Divisions II Athletics Directors Association. While Athletics Director at Parkside, 12 of 15 teams qualified for NCAA post-season appearances. Parkside teams won 10 Great Lakes Valley Conference championships in six different sports. Additionally, Williams lured a number of high-profile events to the Parkside campus, including the NCAA Divsion I fencing national championship and the NCAA Division II national wrestling championship. Williams graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., with a degree in education. He earned a master s degree in educational administration from North Dakota State University. He and his wife, Suzanne, have three children, Cooper, Carter and Caden.

34 MWSU Administrative Staff Patsy Smith serves as the Associate Director of Athletics and the Senior Woman Administrator. She began her career at Western in the fall of 1990 as a student-athlete in the sport of tennis. Smith graduated cum laude with a BSBA in accounting in In 1994, Smith became the Head Women s Tennis Coach and coached the first-ever tennis team to the NCAA Tournament in That same year, she became the first Athletics Business Manager at Western. Since that time, she has served in the roles of Compliance and Academics, Director of Finance, Assistant Athletics Director and her current role as Associate AD/SWA. Smith has served on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee for tennis and the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee for women s basketball. She is the liaison for the AD/SWA Committee to the women s basketball coaches and a member of the MIAA Budget Committee and the MIAA Championships & Officiating Committee. Smith was re-appointed as a member of the NCAA Division II Championships Committee in the Spring of Smith s term of service has been extended through Sept. 1, In the St. Joseph community, Smith is a board member at the YWCA, a member of their Finance Committee, and co-chaired the Women of Excellence Luncheon. Smith is married to Missouri Western Head Men s Basketball Coach Tom Smith. She has two daughters, both Western graduates, and she and Coach Smith have 11 grandchildren. for one year. Patsy Smith Associate Director of Athletics/SWA Trevor Berneking Sports Information Director Trevor Berneking enters his fourth year as Western s Sports Information Director after serving as a graduate assistant at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. Berneking is originally from Grand Marais, Minn., where he graduated from Cook County High School in Berneking played football at the Univeristy of Minnesota, Crookston, for four years where he was a two-year captain and an NSIC All-Conference selection as a defensive lineman. Following his playing career, he served as a student assistant Berneking graduated in December 2004 with a bachelor s degree in sport and recreation management and business management with an emphasis in marketing. Berneking also received a minor in coaching. He received his master s in the spring of 2007 in physical education, health and coaching. Berneking is currently a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He is also on the Heatlh Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Advisory Board. The Missouri Western men s basketball media guide was recognized as the second best guide in Division II, III and NAIA. Berneking and his fiance, Mandie, reside in St. Joseph and will be married on June 11, 2011 in Omaha, Neb. David Lau Development/Special Events David Lau came to Western in 1999 as an assistant baseball coach and administrator. In 2003 he made the switch to full-time administrator as the Athletic Development and Special Events Coordinator. Now in his 12th year at Western, Lau has established himself as one of the most successful development officers in the MIAA and NCAA Division II, raising more than $300,000 annually. In 2003, Lau created the Missouri Western Celebrity Golf Classic. This golf tournament, now in its ninth year, has raised more than $400,000 to help support Missouri Western Athletics and the YWCA Shelter for Abused and Homeless Women and Children. A native of St. Joseph, Mo., Lau is a 1989 graduate of Western, where he played three years of baseball for the Griffons. After his junior season in 1986, he signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. He spent three seasons with the Mets before returning to St. Joseph to complete his undergraduate degree at Western. Lau was inducted into the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame in Currently, Lau serves on the Western Development Council, the Development Ad-hoc Committee, is an active member of the St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce and serves as the MIAA s conference representative for NAADD. Brett Esely Assistant AD/External Relations Brett Esely enters his fourth year as Assistant Athletics Director/ External Relations and his 12th year on the Griffon staff. Esely s responsibilities include overseeing the Sports Information Office and media relations, marketing, advertising, public relations, event management, ticketing and being the liaison to the Gold Coat Club for current and prospective members. For the fifth consecutive year, Esely will be a part of the Griffon Radio Broadcast team, serving as the sideline reporter for Griffon football and appearing on the pre-and-post game shows and will serve as the play-by-play voice for away women s basketball broadcasts and color analyst on men s basketball broadcasts on 680 KFEQ. This year, Esely begins the final year of a four-year term as a member of the NCAA Division II Men s Golf National Committee reccenly being named the chair for the academic year. In addition to his day-to-day duties, Esely served as the Tournament Director for the 2010 NCAA Women s Basketball and Softball Championships hosted by MWSU and will serve as the director for this year s women s basketball championship in March He has also donated his time serving as the emcee for several community and regional events. For his work with the 2009 MIAA Spring TitleFest, he was recognized as the conferences inaugural Volunteer of the Year and he, along with other members of the mareketing project team, have had five marketing pieces recognized nationally by the National Association of Collleigiate Marketing Admiinstrators. Prior to entering his current role, Esely spent four years as the NCAA Compliance & Ticketing Coordinator for the department and served three years as graduate assistant coach for the MWSU men s basketball program under Tom Smith. Esely holds a bachelor s degree from Western in sports marketing/management and received his master s degree in sports marketing/management from the United States Sports Academy. Esely and his wife, Kate, reside in St. Joseph, Mo. with their son, Dax. Eric Kramer NCAA Compliance & Academic Coordinator Eric Kramer is in his fourth year as the NCAA Compliance/Academic Coordinator at Western. Kramer is responsible for all NCAA rules education, eligibility, and monitoring for student-athletes, coaches, athletic staff and boosters, as well as tracking the academic progress of all student-athletes. He is also the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) advisor and serves as the community service contact for Western. Prior to his time here, he worked in the Wichita State University (WSU) Athletic Department for four years. During his last two years at WSU, Kramer was the Compliance/Academic Coordinator and was responsible for the academic progress of the women s basketball, track & field, tennis and softball teams, as well as assisting with the day-to-day compliance duties. His first two years were spent as a graduate assistant in the Athletic Student Services Office. Kramer is a 2002 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in business management. He also received his master s in sport administration from Wichita State in Kramer resides in St. Joseph with wife, Andrea, and daughter, Kellyn. Ryan Menley Director of Athletics Video Production Ryan Menley joined the Western staff in March of 2010 and serves as the athletic department s Video Production Specialist. He is responsible for broadcasts and webcasts for all Griffon games, as well as commercial production and video content for the university s athletics website. Before joing Western, Ryan spent eight years as Sports Director at KQTV in St. Joseph, winning multiple awards for his reporting and production work. A native of St. Louis, Ryan played college baseball at Maryville University in St. Louis where he majored in English education. Mike Halloran Director of Athletics Facilities Mike Halloran enters his first year as the Director of Athletics Facilities at Western State University. As director of athletics facilities, Halloran will manage and coordinate events for the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex, practice fields, Spratt Memorial Stadium and the new spring sports complex. He will also be a point of contact for the Kansas City Chiefs training camp for football operations and media. Before coming to Western, Halloran worked for the St. Joseph Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities Department since In 2001, he became the Senior Recreation Supervisor, responsible for all athletic, recreation and fitness facilities, programs and events. Mike supervised all budgeting, planning, operations and the hiring and training of hundreds of full-time, part-time and seasonal employees. During Halloran s tenure, St. Joseph hosted many prestigious sports events including an International Softball Congress World Fastpitch Championship, United States Olympic Committee Triathlon and Weightlifting trials, three Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball National Softball Championships, two Air National Guard National Softball Tournaments and several regional and state championship events. While under his direction the Heritage Park Softball Complex was named the 2009 Amateur Softball Association s National Complex of the Year. Mike has also been involved with the planning/administration of the NCAA basketball and softball championship events co-hosted by Missouri Western and the city, including the recently completed NCAA Division II Softball Championships held at Heritage Park. Prior to his time in St. Joseph, Halloran worked in municipal recreation in Richmond and Maryville, Missouri. He has a bachelor s degree in business administration and broadcasting from Northwest Missouri State University. In his spare time, Halloran enjoys watching and playing many sports including golf and softball, and spending time with family and friends. Mike and his wife, Julie, an elementary teacher, reside in St. Joseph.
