1 Departent of Civil Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur Kanpur Earthquake Engineering Review Workshop for Masters Students fro Engineering Colleges across India at IIT Kanpur during August 2004 Brief Report A week long (23-28 August 2004) Earthquake Engineering Review Workshop for Masters students fro engineering colleges across the country was inaugurated by Professor Kripa Shanker, Deputy Director, IIT Kanpur. This workshop was conducted at the National Inforation Centre of Earthquake Engineering (NICEE) at IIT Kanpur. Seventy three Masters students fro 33 engineering colleges fro different sates participated in this workshop. The workshop ais at providing earthquake engineering related aterials to the participating students to help the to carry out quality research work in the area of earthquake engineering at their colleges. Professor Sudhir K. Jain infored the participants about the various NICEE and NPEEE activities being conducted by IIT Kanpur and relevance of such workshops in the national context. He insists on quality research work rather than quantity of research work in the area of earthquake engineering. Professor C.V.R. Murty of Civil Engineering Departent welcoe the participants and infored about iportance of inforation disseination by the NICEE. Professor Bithin Datta, Head Civil Engineering Departent, IIT Kanpur briefed the participants about the ongoing activities at the civil engineering departent and it s role in the national capacity building in the area of earthquake engineering. Dr. K.K. Bajpai, the wokshop Coordinator placed the vote of thanks and infored about the overwheling response fro all over India. During the workshop, the participants had discussions with faculty ebers of IIT Kanpur who specialize in earthquake engineering. Visits to the state-of-the art Forced Vibration Test Facility, Structural Engineering Laboratory and video shows on past great earthquakes (copy of workshop schedule is enclosed) organized during the workshop. Deonstration of coputer odels was ade by Mr. Heant B. Kaushik (Ph.D. Scholar at IIT Kanpur). An earthquake engineering quiz was also organized by Mr. Heant B. Kaushik and Mr. Ashish Narayan (Project Associate at IIT Kanpur). The quiz contained the questions starting fro basic concepts of earthquakes to analysis and earthquake resistance design, current codes, etc. The partcipants were provided soe basic study aterial like earthquake tips, list of journals and books in the earthquake engineering, tips about selection of thesis topic and thesis writing etc. The participants Xeroxed ore than 80,000 pages of technical literature fro the collections available at NICEE.
