2 Branch Library Improvement Program (BLIP) It s Happening Western Addition Reopens February 2! When you walk into the renovated Western Addition Branch Library, you ll be met with a feeling of both familiarity and newness. The large reading room is still there, but a new ceiling, lights and windows make it brighter and livelier. The Children s Room is in the same area, but it s now appointed with new furniture, wall colors, floor coverings, computers and an early literacy learning wall. The program room, complete with state-of-the-art projection equipment, has moved to the south side of the building adjacent to a new and expanded Teen Area. And the outside courtyard (right) is completely redesigned and landscaped to provide a safe, pleasant, seating area. Just as important is what you can t see. The branch has been structurally strengthened for earthquake safety and the mechanical and electrical systems have been replaced. The staff areas have been ergonomically designed to help the staff process books and materials with ease. Join us at 1 p.m. on Feb. 2 when we celebrate the reopening of this lovely branch. Come greet the most familiar feature the Western Addition library staff who is excited to get back to their branch and their community. Bernal to Get a Facelift The WPA-era Bernal Heights Branch Library will close soon for a much-needed renovation. The Library plans to make the building accessible and seismically safe, while preserving the historic character of the existing structure. Feedback and input from community members were taken into consideration when developing the plans that call for a designated Teen Area, an additional elevator and staircase, new restrooms and expanded Children s Area (which will be moved downstairs). Other features include an accessible program room for library events with after-hours access for community meetings; increased shelf and materials space; a variety of seating choices for quiet reading and studying; a 24-hour book return; more computers with access to library online resources and the Internet; wireless (Wi-Fi) access; self-service checkout stations; new and restored furniture; more functional staff work areas; and improved heating and ventilation. Author and Bernal Heights resident Peter Wiley reminisced about the old branch. The Bernal Branch is like a beloved old friend, who is always there ready to help and never turns down your requests, he said. It is hard to imagine how many people have visited the library in the 67 years since it was built, how many books came and went through its doors, how many community meetings were held in its basement, how many children like my own borrowed their first books and had stories read to them here. Our old friend needs a facelift. Our friend will be out of service for a while, but we will end up with a beautifully renovated building ready to become a public mainstay of our thriving community for years to come, Wiley said. The branch is scheduled to close for renovation in early While the branch is closed, Lapsits and Preschool Storytimes will continue weekly at Red Hill Books (401 Cortland Ave.) and the BLIP Bookmobile will stop twice a week on Holly Park Circle, in front of Junipero Serra Elementary School (625 Holly Park Circle). Also, the nearby Mission, Excelsior and new Glen Park branches are open and available for Bernal Heights neighbors during the renovation. Bayview All in the Family New exhibition captures private moments of Dorothea Lange and family in Marin I began to wonder what it was that made us all feel, the minute we went over the brow of that hill, a certain sense of not peace, particularly, or enjoyment freedom. Then, I thought, I could do a real sequence, a series of photographs on the subject of freedom, of which the cabin would be the device. Dorothea Lange, Untitled, 1961 The Dorothea Lange Collection, Oakland Museum of California. The City of Oakland. Gift of Paul S. Taylor. Courtesy of the Marin History Museum. Dorothea Lange, from the KQED film Dorothea Lange, Part I: Under the Trees, 1965 Dorothea Lange is well-known for her commissioned work as a photographer in 1935 for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) documenting the conditions of migrant laborers. Her photography was pivotal in emphasizing laborers dignity and pride amidst widespread poverty. She and her second husband, Paul Taylor, an economics professor at the University of California at Berkeley, collaborated on a report to accompany her photographs, which resulted in the establishment of state-built camps for migrants. Lange also took to the streets of San Francisco, where she documented the lives of everyday people in such powerful images as White Angel Breadline (1933) and the iconic Migrant Mother (1936), depicting a family living on a pea farm on the California Central Coast during the Depression. The impact and importance of the natural environment plays an important, but different role through Lange s photographs in the exhibition A Life Surrounding a Cabin: Dorothea Lange at Steep Ravine. For Lange, the environment at Steep Ravine shaped the identity and bond of her own family. She described the photographs as documenting the natural growth of the children and the pleasure it gave her to see them so happy and free there. In the late 1950s, Lange ( ) and Taylor began leasing a small cabin perched on the rocky coast of Marin County. They traveled to Steep Ravine many times over the years with their children and grandchildren, crossing the San Francisco Bay from their home in Berkeley a short distance, but worlds away. Surrounded by the wildness of natural elements on the western edge of Mount Tamalpais, this became a profoundly significant place for Lange and her family. The cabin and its environs so inspired her that she often spoke of creating a book of photographs exploring the sense of freedom she discovered there, but she was unable to complete the project before her death in In A Life Surrounding a Cabin: Dorothea Lange at Steep Ravine, on view Jan.19 Mar. 16 in the Skylight Gallery at the Main Library, the camera turns back on Lange s own family, revealing intimate, everyday scenes of a family and their connection to the environment. Daniel Dixon (son of Dorothea Lange and first husband painter Maynard Dixon) and his wife, Dixie, will kick off the exhibition with a two-hour opening presentation. The Dixons will detail the universal appeal of Lange s oeuvre in the first hour, and in the second, they will concentrate on the family and Lange s collaborative relationship with Maynard Dixon. The presentation takes place 1:30 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 in the Main Library s Koret Auditorium. On Feb. 19, filmmaker Meg Partridge will screen her film Dorothea Lange: A Visual Life followed by a Q&A session with Partridge; her father, Rondal Partridge, a long-time colleague and friend of Lange; and Betsy Partridge, a Lange biographer, at 6 p.m. in the Koret Auditorium at the Main Library. A book sale and signing of Betsy Partridge s biography on Lange will conclude the program. Dorothea Lange, Untitled (Dyanna), 1961 The Dorothea Lange Collection, Oakland Museum of California. 4 January 2008 Pick for January and February: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See A language kept secret for a thousand years forms the backdrop for an unforgettable story. Two Chinese women, Lily and Snow Flower, share a friendship and love that sustains them through their lives. Lisa See s engrossing historical novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan takes place in remote 19th century China. Girls had their feet bound, then spent the rest of their lives in seclusion with only a single window from which to see. The author s in-depth research into women s ceremonies and duties in China s rural interior brings fascinating revelations about arranged marriages, women s inferior status in both their natal and married homes, and the Confucian proverbs and myriad superstitions that informed daily life. Illiterate and isolated, women were not expected to think, be creative or have emotions. Yet in one remote county, women developed their own secret code, nu shu women s writing the only gender-based written language found in the world. Some girls were paired as oldsames in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives. They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their windows to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. In Snow Flower,, an old woman tells of her complicated relationship with her old-same, their arranged marriages, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood until a terrible misunderstanding written on their secret fan threatens to tear them apart. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan delves into one of the most mysterious and treasured relationships of all time female friendship. Born in Paris and raised in Los Angeles, See spent much of her time in L.A. s Chinatown. Her first book, On Gold Mountain: The One Hundred Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family (1995), traces the journey of her great-grandfather, Fong See, who overcame obstacles at every step to become the 100-year-old godfather of the Los Angeles Chinatown and the patriarch of a sprawling family. See has always been intrigued by stories that have been lost, forgotten, or deliberately covered up, whether in the past or happening right now in the world today. For Snow Flower,, she traveled to a remote area of China where she was told she was only the second foreigner ever to visit to research the secret writing invented, used, and kept secret by women for over a thousand years. Amy Tan calls the novel achingly beautiful, a marvel of imagination, and the novel became a New York Times bestseller and a Book Sense Number One Pick. It has also won numerous awards domestically and internationally. For On the Same Page, the Library has purchased the 2006 Random House Trade Paperback edition. It is also available in Chinese and Spanish language translations, and in English as an abridged audiobook in CD format. 5 Events and Happenings Chinatown Teens Use Technology to Build Community Temple-shaped roofs, dim sum shops, groceries selling dried seafood products and tasty fortune cookie factories it s got to be San Francisco s Chinatown. Cars and pedestrians pass Portsmouth Square to get through the crowded streets for shopping, sightseeing or Cantonese cuisine. For a group of teenagers at the Chinatown Branch, these are everyday sights as they find their way to Teen Zine meetings. Teen Zine is a year-round bilingual (English/Chinese) teen technology group that meets every Friday and Saturday at the Chinatown Branch Library. Activities include computer skills training, Web page design, digital photography, homework help, city excursions and volunteer work in the Chinatown community. Teen Zine is meant to help teenagers know more about their hometown, and to contribute to the area s history and heritage, says teen librarian Jewel Chen. The program encourages teens to represent Chinatown from the inside, through online biographies, digital photo exhibits, original art and articles on cultural happenings. Not all meetings take place inside the library field trips are frequent and fun! The Teen Zine program is accepting new members (ages 13-18). Meetings are held 3:30 5:30 p.m. on Fridays and 1 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The Teen Zine Web site can be viewed in both Chinese and English at For more information, contact Jewel at (415) or Teen Zine chinatowntz@gmail.com. Looking Forward to 2008 at the Library (continued from p. 1) to fifth grade, and for any older people who love amazing photos of animals. Bishop s writing is clear and simple and packed with fascinating facts. Denise Schmidt, librarian and children s materials selector The Golden Gate Valley Branch marks its 91st anniversary this year. We re looking at having a celebration at the branch sometime this spring. Irene Lee, branch manager, Golden Gate Valley Branch There is a new mystery book by Peter Robinson coming out in January, and one by Julia Spencer-Fleming in the spring. I got hooked on both series because of my (library) patrons. I am also a romance reader Regency romances in particular and I am very pleased that when it was discovered the most requested genre from LINK+ was romance, that SFPL stepped up and started putting them on the lists. Lots of us readers prefer a happy ending. So here s to more romance (books) in 2008! Maggie Siegel, librarian, Ortega Branch Library Advisory Board Serves as Voice of the Community The Council of Neighborhood Libraries (CNL) grew out of a grass-roots movement of neighborhood library patrons who organized to prevent threatened library service cuts and branch closings in Individual CNL members were proud to campaign for 1994 s Proposition E which established our current Library Preservation Fund, dedicating 2½ cents from every $100 of San Francisco property tax to the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL). And this year, individual members were again active in support of continuing the fund (Proposition D). CNL, now an advisory body to the SFPL, promotes and facilitates communication among branch libraries, and between the neighborhoods, the library and city decision-makers. The council is made up of two library users from each of the 27 branch libraries who are appointed by the branch librarian to represent their individual branch. The Branch Library Improvement Program, started by a voter-approved bond in 2000, has been and continues to be one area where this feedback and increased communication has been of vital importance. If you want to support the aims and work of the group, please contact your neighborhood librarian. Your membership will sponsor a wide range of free Library programs and services that have a positive impact on people all across San Francisco. Your support will also ensure the best equipment and resources for our libraries and library staff. Friends offers a range of membership levels, each with their own unique benefits. For more information, go to or call (415) The mission of Friends of the San Francisco Public Library is to create, steward and support a superior, free public library system in San Francisco. We are committed to raising the standard of excellence of our libraries by funding programs and services beyond what is allocated in the city s budget. We believe in free and equal access to information for all. We re Building Better Libraries for Stronger Communities Join us! In 2007, the Neighborhood Library Campaign had much to celebrate, as Friends helped complete the grand opening of the new library at Glen Park and the re-opening of branch libraries at West Portal, Sunset and Marina after their amazing renovations will usher in two more completed branch renovations, three branches will close for renovations and the construction of a new branch for the Ingleside will begin. In 2000, San Francisco voters overwhelmingly passed the Proposition A bond measure, which funds the building and renovation of branch libraries through the Branch Library Improvement Program (BLIP). However, the bond does not provide funding for furnishings and fixtures. The Friends Neighborhood Library Campaign stepped in to fill that gap by raising $16 million to equip and furnish these branches. More than 200 Neighborhood Library Campaign volunteers from across the city are raising funds and generating excitement and support for these library renovation projects. In every neighborhood, our campaign committees have their own special way of fundraising and supporting their branch libraries. Laura Bernabei, (below) an Ingleside Library Campaign Committee member and volunteer, saw getting involved with her neighborhood campaign as the perfect opportunity to meet new people and put her baking skills to good use by making tasty treats for different events and fundraisers. When I heard they were building a new branch library on Ocean Avenue, it felt like a perfect fit, Bernabei said. It is all about being part of one s community Writers Remembered: A Bay Area Literary Tribute by giving to it. I have really enjoyed meeting my new neighbors on this committee. For Carole Jan Lee, (at right) a Richmond District Library Campaign donor, supporting her library was more personal. I was very eager to assist with the Richmond District Library Campaign because the library has been very important to my family over the years, Lee said. The library is life; we need to nurture it and help it grow. I am proud to support this vital institution in our community. From garden tours to dine outs, engraved bricks to tote bags, cocktail parties to children s carnivals, we are reaching out to San Francisco s diverse communities. There are many exciting ways to get involved with the Neighborhood Library Campaign. You can join a committee in one of our active neighborhoods and help fundraise by planning events and special projects. You can donate to one of our branches to help cover the cost of the furniture, fixtures and equipment that Friends has committed to funding. And as always, you can become a member of the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and help us continue to support a superior, free public library system in San Francisco. For more information about how you can help, please visit our website: or contact Mary Abler, Neighborhood Library Campaign Associate: mary.abler@friendssfpl.org, (415) x107. This month Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco Public Library present Writers Remembered 2008: A Celebration of the Authors, Poets and Journalists Who Died in Friends, colleagues and admirers will gather in the Koret Auditorium of the Main Library to honor and celebrate the creative minds that left us in 2007, with readings, personal stories, and reflections. This unique event will take place 1 4 p.m. on Jan. 27. Writer Gerry Nicosia will host with an array of well-known authors scheduled to appear. Among those to be remembered are Phil Frank, David Halberstam, Philomene Long, Norman Mailer, Tillie Olsen, Grace Paley, Allen Wheelis, and many others. Participants this year include: Richard Boyle, Sharon Doubiago, S. A. Griffen, Adam Hochschild and Wavy Gravy. Writers Remembered has become a San Francisco institution; an important date on the city s literary calendar. This is more a celebration than a requiem, noted Byron Spooner, Friends director of book operations and producer of the Writers Remembered program. Many participants simply get up and tell embarrassing stories about those who are no longer around to refute them. Writers Remembered is a free, public event.
