2 Interim Dean of Students Named - I am pleased to announce that Stephen Creamer has been named Interim Dean of Students (DoS), effective immediately. He will maintain his role as Dean of Student Financial Services (SFS) with increased support from Susan Sullivan and the continued support from all the SFS staff, the Student Life/Health Services staff, and others. Recently, there have been several changes in the Student Life/Dean of Students Office. Following is information that may be helpful to you: Interim DoS Responsibilities (Spending 2-3 days per week in Lynn, as appropriate) 1. Leadership of Student Development (Health Services, Student Life, Student Activities, etc.) 2. Judicial Affairs/ Code of Conduct Issues 3. Shuttle Bus - operational issues 4. 3 NSCC Brings Home the Gold! Congratulations to Samantha McGilloway, Director of Marketing Communications and NSCC s Marketing staff Tracy Callahan, Erin Field and Ejyo Katagiri on winning the Paragon gold for their 2013 Viewbook (pictured left). The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) prestigious Paragon Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community and technical colleges. It's the only national competition of its kind that honors excellence exclusively among marketing and PR professionals at two-year colleges. The Paragon Awards were presented at the recent NCMPR National Convention held in New Orleans, LA. GOVERNANCE ELECTIONS: It s the time of year when we elect and appoint representatives to our governance committees. Attached to this Bulletin is information about the process for filling vacancies on the College Coordinating Council and the eight Standing Committees that represent our governance system. You can indicate your interest to serve on a committee or nominate someone else. This is your opportunity to participate in the decision making process of the college. Please take the time to review the materials and consider making a commitment to serve. 4 NSCC Students Visit Varian Semiconductor Equipment - Twenty-one NSCC students visited Varian Semiconductor Equipment in Gloucester as part of a series of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field trips scheduled this semester. Students learned how computer chips are made, toured the manufacturing floor and observed ion implanters being built for Varian s customers including Intel and Samsung. Key Varian employees, including one NSCC graduate, met with the students, sharing their personal backgrounds and experiences that led them to their current jobs and encouraged our students to pursue STEM careers. The tour concluded with a visit to Varian s wind turbine which provides the electricity for the plant, saving the company over a million dollars in energy cost in the first year. Student feedback from the trip was extremely positive. The next field trip is scheduled for March 27 to irobot in Bedford. --Barbara Harrison, STEM Achievement Coach, Bharriso01@northshore.edu 20 Minute Online Professional Development The Monday Morning Mentor series will be available over the spring semester to bring you professional development in twenty minute snippets. 5 Upcoming LMS Sandbox Evaluation Dates - We Need Your Feedback The college has recently begun a search for a new Learning Management System, with implementation scheduled to begin in summer In early March, three vendors came to campus to present their LMS solutions to the college community. Each company's product is now available for members of the college community to experience and evaluate. ITD is hosting several opportunities in March and April for faculty and staff to stop in, test out the different systems, and provide us with feedback. The upcoming LMS Sandbox Evaluation dates are: Wednesday, April 2nd from 8:00am-10:30am in DB201 Wednesday, April 2nd from 2:00pm-6:00pm in DB201 Thursday, April 3rd from 8:00am-10:30am in DB239 (Library Preview Area) Thursday, April 3rd from 2:00pm-6:00pm in DB201 Access to the sandbox environments are also available virtually if you are interested in exploring them on your own. If you would like the access information along with the evaluation form, please send an to itd@northshore.edu. We will need all feedback sent to us by Friday, April 11 th. 6 Celebrating NSCC s 50 th Anniversary.. NSCC opened its doors in September, 1965 we plan to launch a yearlong celebration of the college s 50 th anniversary with the inauguration of new president, Dr. Patricia Gentile, in September, We expect the 2014/2015 year will host special events ranging from an Inauguration Gala sponsored by the NSCC Foundation to a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Lynn campus expansion. Annual college events for students, staff, and the community will also focus throughout the year on a 50 th anniversary theme. A 50 th Anniversary Steering Committee is being formed co-chaired by Linda Brantley, Director of Public Relations/New Media and Lesley Peters, NSCC Alumni Trustee. Committees for Student events chaired by VP Donna Richemond and Alumni events co-chaired by Sandy Rochon and Donna Rosato are also being formed. Additionally, an Inauguration Committee will be co-chaired by Maureen O Neill, VP of Academic Affairs and Richard Yagjian, Chair of the Board of Trustees. Brainstorming sessions for 50 th Anniversary ideas, projects, events, etc. will be held on: Tuesday, April 1 2:00 p.m. in LE 234, Lynn campus (Professional Day) Monday, April 7 11:00 a.m. in DB 322, Danvers campus Wednesday, April 9 2 p.m. in LE 234, Lynn campus Join us! 7 Eastern Bank Invites NSCC Community to Participate in Farmer Dave s CSA - Our Lynn neighbor, Eastern Bank, located at 1 Eastern Place is inviting the NSCC Community to participate with them in Farmer Dave s CSA (Community Supported Agriculture.) Farmer Dave will be bringing shares to Eastern Bank on Wednesday s this summer for 20 weeks. Here is their invitation to us to attend an information session: Please join us in the Atlantic View Café on April 2 nd from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM to meet with Farmer Dave s. The Atlantic Café is located on the 5 th floor of the Eastern Bank building. They have informed their Security staff that people from North Shore Community College will be coming to the information session. You will need a photo ID and may be asked to sign the guest register. Farmer Dave will be discussing their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares for They will discuss typical weekly shares, share sizes, costs and affordable ways to pay for your share. David Dolbashian of Eastern Bank writes: As many of you know, last year the Green Team introduced Farmer Dave s CSA shares to Eastern. It was a huge success. People who participated loved the fresh produce and fruit. From my own experience I can say that for 20 weeks I actually ate well. Also, President Pat Gentile will open the festival with remarks at the Spark (NSCC student literary and visual arts magazine) launch on Monday, April 14 at noon in DS111 (area outside the bookstore) on the Danvers campus. 9 Worthy Causes Haven From Hunger Food Drive Two of my classes, along with MassPIRG, are doing a Service Learning Project. We are having a food drive to benefit Haven from Hunger in Peabody for two weeks - March 24 to April 4, Look for collection boxes that will be placed in all three Danver s lobbies. Items most desperately needed are: peanut butter, cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit and vegetables, and tuna.
