Henry Clay Band Notes Page 2 of 15 President s Pen HC Band Booster Co-Presidents Dear Band Family, It s May and that means it is time for us to say farewell as Co-Presidents, and pass the baton on to Kathy and Russell Edwards, who will serve as Co-Presidents for There is a great group of officers assembled for the coming year, and we are glad to know the HCBB will be in good hands. Just a reminder: the Vice-President and Equipment Chair positions are still vacant, so please consider one of these offices, even if you are new to the HC Band! We want to thank everyone who has worked so faithfully this past year with the HCBB. We so appreciate the team of people who have seen the Boosters and the HC Band through the transition last summer to new (and wonderful) directors and the challenges of a significant dip in Bingo income, to a different marching band circuit and some great new performance opportunities for the ensembles. We leave each HCBB family with a question to ask yourselves: In , how can I help the HCBB be stronger and more successful at supporting the HC Band? Clearly, working Bingo, our biggest fundraiser at a budgeted figure of $50,000 in income for next year, simply has to be a priority for every band family. And, the students and directors need the participation of every family in all of the fundraisers, attending marching band events, ensemble performances, and helping out with food, chaperoning, and just being present at the social events sponsored by the Boosters. Join in the fun, and you will surely find your experiences to be as rewarding as we have in our four years with the HCBB. We will look forward to hearing about the HC Band as we continue our interest and support as alumni in the coming years! In gratitude, Kathy and Scott Riley, Co-Presidents, Kathy.riley523@gmail.com. The HC Band Boosters Need You! We still have FOUR crucial positions to fill: Vice President and Equipment Chair. The Vice-President(s) assists the president and helps with various committees. It is basically a year of learning the details of the Booster organization in preparation for becoming president the following year. The Equipment Chair is the Pit Crew leader during marching season and assists in getting equipment (mostly percussion) to concert sites later in the season. This position involves making sure there are enough pit crew workers for football game half-time performances and competitions, as well as communicating with the truck driver about dates, times and locations of competitions. We must fill these positions to function as a booster organization next year!! Please consider filling one of these vital positions by calling Kathy Riley at Kathy.riley523@gmail.com or one of the Nominating Committee members: Stacy Hunt at dsmhunt@insightbb.com, Lisa Bush at mlnb1@yahoo.com, Kathy Edwards at kathyandrussell@hotmail.com, Michelle Morris at mkmorkan@yahoo.comor or Stephanie Baldwin at kybaldwin@windstream.net.

For more information, PLEASE contact Lee Kemp at or kempinsurance@windstream.net; Jean O Daniel at or jean.odaniel@insightbb.com; or Diane Bradley at or scrabrose@windstream.net. Thank you! Your Fundraising Efforts Support A few weeks ago our Wind Ensemble and Concert Band attended the KMEA District Ensemble Festival at Scott County HS. As I sat there and listened to all the bands perform, I was reminded that we have an exceptional band program at HCHS. Our bands performed very well as reflected in their Distinguished ratings. In particular, our percussion section performed at a much higher level than the other schools. We are strong in our percussion section, in part, because the HC Band Boosters provide additional funding for instruction and instruments. Due to your fundraising efforts, our directors are able to complement their own areas of expertise by hiring specialists and guest instructors to teach percussion and the other skills to our students. This is one example of how the HC Band Boosters support the band program at HC. Without the fundraising support of our parents and students, this wouldn t be possible. And who benefits? Our students...your children! Thank you, Geni Osborn, HCBB Treasurer

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 5 of SENIOR PROFILES Alyssa Iwinski has been a member of the Henry Clay Marching Band for four years. She especially enjoyed being in percussion classes with Justin Fisher. Alyssa participated in concert band and steel band for two years, and jazz band for one year. She has been a member of Tates Creek Indoor Ensemble for three years, TCIE placing in the top four in the finals at World Guard International. She received scholarships to the University of Dayton, Transylvania University, Xavier University, Miami of Ohio, and Rhodes College. After intense deliberation, she has decided to attend Rhodes College in Memphis in the fall, where she will pursue a degree in biochemistry in preparation for medical school. She is very grateful to Justin Fisher, Greg Strouse and Chris Logue for teaching her everything that she knows about drums, and inspiring her to follow in all three of their very talented footsteps. Through receiving their encouragement and witnessing their talent, she was able to push herself beyond what she had every imagined was possible. Katie Silver fell in love with music and the flute in the fifth grade, and now wants to make it her life s work. She has participated in the HC Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Marching Band. She has been selected to play in the All-State and All-District Bands, MSU Honors Band, and has won numerous Distinguished ratings at Solos and Ensembles. Katie is the Associate Principal Flute for CKYO s Symphonic Orchestra. She has studied under Merrilee Elliott for 8 years. Her greatest music memory was performing next to Merrilee in CKYO s Side-by-Side concert with LPO. Katie loves the theater and has been the Production Manager for Morton Middle School s Spring Musical for the past 2 years. In addition to her interest in the arts, she is one of the founding members of the HC Philosophy Club, and loves hanging out at Starbucks with her friends. In the fall Katie will be attending the University of Kentucky majoring Music Education. Ben Mawby has participated in the 3 rd -Hour Percussion class every year. I was in the HC Concert Band as a freshman and Wind Ensemble from sophomore year on. I attended the Music For All Festival with the Wind Ensemble. I am participating in the HC Steel Band this year for the first time. I plan on continuing to play percussion for the rest of my life. I may minor in music but am currently undecided. My favorite instruments are hand drums and all world percussion.

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 6 of SENIOR PROFILES Judith Yi has participated in the HC Marching Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Steel Band since her sophomore year, where she plays flute. Through band, her school life has been greatly enriched with many life-long friends she met and valuable and non-forgettable memories with them. Currently, she plans on not to continue to study music; however, she definitely enjoyed playing flute and will miss being part of the Henry Clay Band. She plans to attend DePauw University next fall semester. She would like to thanks the teachers for making her experience in band enjoyable. Marissa Gorman has been a part of the Henry Clay Marching Band for the past three years and has been playing the clarinet since the fifth grade. She has been in the Wind Ensemble for two years and she loves it. Joining band was the best decision Marissa has made in her high school career. She has no regrets and would do it all over again! Marissa thinks she will always be remembered as the girl that fell during band and got the "injured knee twice." She and her family want to thank everyone involved with the band program. Marissa has such great memories from all of her contacts and relationships with all the people involved in Band. The Gorman family wants to thank all the people that have supported and helped Marissa for her three years in Band. Thank you Mr. Kite and Mr. Bayerle for being so patient and supportive of Marissa and for all the continuous motivation you bring to the band. Marissa plans to attend Thomas Moore College. Andrew Staed has been playing clarinet in the band program for all four years he has been at Henry Clay. He's been in the concert band for all four of those years. He has enjoyed it greatly, participating fully to the best of his ability. He feels like he has made a lot of progress on his instrument and gives a lot of credit and thanks to all of the band directors he has seen come and go. Mr. White, Mr. Kite, Mr. Bayerle and Mr. Chamberlain all helped and encouraged him to become better on his instrument, something that he has enjoyed doing more than he could ever have imagined that he would. He plans to go to UK after graduation in order to become a psychologist.

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 7 of SENIOR PROFILES Alyssa Parrish plays clarinet in the HC Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. Preston Bell Music has played a big role in Preston s life. He has studied classical piano for twelve years and recently showcased his work at a senior recital, which was the culmination of his Liberal Arts Academy Mentoring Project. He has played keyboards for the Lab Band and the Jazz Ensemble all four years at Henry Clay. Besides piano, he also plays bass guitar and guitar. Along with three other Jazz Band alumni John Cowgill, Andrew Riley, and Max Pohl he was part of JAMP, an Indie rock group. Earlier this year, Preston auditioned at several colleges on his primary instrument, classical piano, and has decided to attend The George Washington University on a Presidential Scholarship in the Arts. In addition to music, Preston has been involved with many other activities throughout high school. He was a varsity member of the crosscountry team for the past three years and was designated cocaptain during his senior year. He also served as treasurer of the Young Democrats and co-president of the Latin Club. Terrance Overstreet plays percussion in the HC Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble.

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 8 of SENIOR PROFILES Alex Current plays trumpet in the HC Concert Band and Lab Band. David Gibbs plays percussion in the HC Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Steel Band. Rachael Gilley plays clarinet in the HC Concert Band and is in HC Marching Band Color Guard.

Henry Clay Band Notes Page 10 of 15 WELCOME TO RANDALL EVANS, 2010 HC BAND STUDENT TEACHER Mr. Randall Evans is a senior at Asbury University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Music Education. Born in Orlando, Florida, Mr. Evans' family moved to Kentucky in 2000 so his sisters (Valerie Evans, Professor of Jazz and Trombone, Transylvania University and Michele Lunetta, Special Education, East Jessamine Middle School) could attend the University of Kentucky. While at Asbury, he participated in the UK Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Musicum Collegium Brass Ensemble, Salvation Army Student Fellowship Brass Ensemble and Songster, Men's Glee Club, Concert Choir, Chorale, and Jazz Vocal Ensemble. During the summers and year round he teaches trumpet, guitar, bass guitar, and music theory privately along with various high school band camps. After graduation, Mr. Evans plans to play semiprofessionally and seek out a local high school band director position. The Henry Clay music program directors, students and parents have renewed Mr. Evans' faith in public school music education and, after graduation; he hopes to work with the Henry Clay music program for years to come. HC BAND PERCUSSION STUDENTS COMPETE IN REGIONAL COMPETITION! This spring, several current HC Band students and alumni performed as part of the Tates Creek Indoor Ensemble. Their 2010 program, The Other Side utilized a dual color scheme and represented the "other side" both musically and visually in many different ways! The group culminated its most successful competitive season to date with a 4th place finish and a score of Congrats to current HC percussion students: David Gibbs, Brackston Wood, Hana Ishigaki, Nick Morris, and alumni students: Brent Hume, Alyssa Iwinski, Ty Saylors, and Rachel Chancellor.
