Carker-c&nsel.ng panels establsh plan to mprove ther effectveness A plan to mprove the effectveness of career-counselng panels at NCAA member nsttutons was formulated by representatves of those panels last month at a meetng n Chcago. Ths was the frst meetng of panel representatves, whose prmary responsblty s to assst student-athletes durmg the transton from collegate to professonal athletcs careers. Panel members hope to enhance ther efforts through an nternal educaton process, whch ncludes acquantng coaches, athletcs personnel and student-athletes wth the actual problems wth agents and the choces that are avalable to the studentathletes regardng. professonal careers. Panel members requested that a network be establshed to exchange nformaton among panels, wth the natonal offce servng as ntermedary Through such an exchange, the actvtes and polces of partcular panels could be made avalable to others on a regular bass to prevent each panel from, as one speaker at the Chcago meetng put t, renventng the wheel. Panel members agreed that coaches wll play a vtal role n the success of ther nsttutons panels. It was stated that nsttutons need the assstance of ther coaches and admnstrators n ntroducng panel members and dentfyng ther servces to student-athletes. Representatves at the Chcago meetng generally agreed that as add& tonal panels are establshed, semannual meetngs should bc held. Another meetng has been planned tentatvely for the sprng of It s estmated that about 45 to 50 counselng panels are n place at member nsttutons, although there were only 27 panels represented at Chcago. That total of I IO amendmentsrepresentng every proposal fully sponsored and properly submtted by the November I deadlne-- s the lowest snce the 1980 Conventon, when 103 legslatve proposals appeared n the Conventon publcatons. TheJont Commsson-Councl approach to Bylaw 5-l-(j) whch wll determne the Intal elgblty of student-athletes m Dvson I effectve August I, l986-was announced November I n a statement by John W. Ryan, char of the Commsson, and John R. Davs, NCAA presdent. The Commsson and the Councl agreed to establsh an ndexng formula, usng hgh school grade-pont average and natonal test score, for a three-year phase-m perod, wth the current requrements of the bylaw becomng effectve n the thrd year. The elgblty-ndex amendment, f adopted, would apply for the frst two years (.e., the enterng classes of 1986 and 1987). and the bylaw requrements adopted n 1983 then would become applcable n the thrd year (.e., the enterng class of 1988). In the frst year ( ), the student-athlete could acheve ntal elgblty by usng an ndex whereby a 740 on the SAT test or I7 on the ACT test could be combned wth a mnmum I.800 grade-pont average n the core currculum, and a grade pont n the core could be combned wth a mnmum 660 SAT or I3 ACT In the second year (1987-X8), the ndex would be reduced to the pont where a 720 SAT or I6 ACT could offset a GPA, and a GPA could offset a 680 SAT or I4 ACT. In , the orgnal language of the rule would become the mnmum requrement: a or better n the core, and at least a 700 on the SAT or I5 on the ACT. I am pleased wth ths refnement of the rule, Ryan sad n the jont statement. I beleve the jont poston of the Commsson and the Councl wll enable us to attract the largest number of presdents to the Conven-._ 7 10 amendments: lowest number of proposals snce Conventon -~- ton n New Orleans, and I beleve most wll come to support ths jont poston. Ths phase-n approach would appear to take nto account the addtonal flexblty n mplementng the rule that was desred by the Presdents Commsson and the goal of reachng the orgnal standards that were ncluded n the rule when t was adopted, he sad. Unless an unexpred term on a commttee s nvolved, the postons to be flled by the Conventon are three-year terms. These are busnessmen, not dealsts. Some SWC coaches felt Collns and staff had come from an ndependent school at Southern Mss, where they could play rather fast and loose wth recrutng rules because they were under no conference montorng. They felt he was assumng a program left by Ron Meyer, whch own backyard. Jacke Sherrll, wth hs hghpowered operaton movng nto Texas A&M, generated a certan amount of frcton. Fan nterest and televson nterest would be greater n a dualmeet champonshp seres that what we now receve n the ndvdual NCAA champonshps. Fans are more nclned to be supportve of a team rather than several ndvduals attendng a natonal tournament 1 would lke to see Mat News or Amateur Wrestlng News, or both, select the top 32 teams n the country on a format smlar to basketball, wrestle t down 10 I6 and fnally to the fnal four. I beleve there would be more nterest from wrestlng fans and from the general publc, and a lot more nterest from televson. We need to pursue adual-meet champonshp as soon as possble. Navy s Napoleon McCallum, for nstance, needs 501 yards n all-purpose runnng n hs last three games to surpass the Dvson I-A career record of 6,885 by Stanford s lttle Darrn Nelson n (he mssed 1979 wth an njury). That s a per-game average of 167, and McCaIlum s current season average s (gvng hm 6,385 for hs career). Illnos Davd Wllams needs 40 catches n hs last three games to break the career recevng record of 261 catches by Tulsa s Howard Twlley from 1963 to 1965 (Twlley played only three seasons to Wllams four). That s unlkely, but possble. UCLA s John Lee needs only fve feld goals n hs last three games 10 break the career record of 78 by Arzona State s Lus Zendejas from 1981 to Max Zendejas of Ar- zona, Lus brother and one of several kckers n a famous famly, has 72, just two fewer than Lee, and he also could surpass the record. Lee also seems certan to break the all-tme accuracy record, unless he develops a sudden case of the yps. He s now 74-for-84, or 88.1 percent, and the record s 81.9 percent (usng a mnmum of 60 attempts) by Chuck Nelson of Washngton n McClure nears 10,000 yards Bowlng Green s Bran McClure needs 342 yards passng n hs last two games to become the second lo,ooo- yard career passer n I-A hstory. Wth 9,658, McClure needs 922 n hs fnal two games-a 461-yard average--to break the career mark of 10,579 by Boston College s Doug Flute n McClure now s averagng 228 ths season. Next n passng and certan to fnsh hgh are Iowa s Chuck Long at 8,385 and Illnos Jack Trudeau al 7,413, followed by Fresno State s Kevn Sweeney (only junor n the group) at 7,394 and Brgham Young s Robbe Bosco at 7.25 I. In total offense, McClure leads wth 9, I54 rushng-passng yards ~ thrd on the all-tme I-A lst. Long had 8,261, Trudeau 7,356, Sweeney 7,1.65 and Bosco 6, and countng Trudeau, by the way, now has a streak of 214 consecutve passes wthout an ntercepton after throwng 36 passes aganst Mchgan.
