It marked the first time in conference history that two league teams started 4-0 (let alone 6-0) during the same season. In 2014, Illinois State (7) and North Dakota State (9) started the season with lengthy winning streaks. Both teams streaks were ended at UNI. In 2017, South Dakota (6) and North Dakota State (8) both had six-game win streaks (or better) to start the season. In 2012, three league teams (Illinois State-5-0; North Dakota State-5-0; and Youngstown State-4-0) all started 4-0 or better before losing. That s the first time three different league teams started a season 4-0. That occurred again in 2017 as Illinois State (4-0), South Dakota (6-0) and North Dakota State (8-0) all started the year with lengthy win streaks. In 33 league seasons, 71 teams have won eight or more games during the regular season, and all but six have made the playoffs: UNI (in 1989 and 1999), WIU (in 1994), and YSU (in 2001, 2005 and 2013) are the only league teams to win eight and not make it. Fifty-seven teams (including two teams in 2017) have won nine or more games in league history. The 2003 season marked the first in which more than two league members (4) won nine or more games the same season. The 2007 campaign marked the first in conference history that two teams (UNI-11; SIU-10) had 10+ regular-season wins. In 2014, Illinois State-10 and North Dakota State-11 matched it. Only two teams (Southern Illinois in 2009 and North Dakota State in 2013) have won eight conference games in a season (although the opportunity to go 8-0 has only existed since 2008). NDSU, in 2013, became just the 11th team in conference history to go undefeated in league play. In 2017, Valley Football had a non-conference record. The league has had a winning non-league record 25 times in 33 football seasons, which includes better than.500 marks in 20 of the past 23. 6 OPPONENTS VS. NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS, by League QB Nick Hill led the Salukis to wins against FBS members in 2006 (Indiana) and 2007 (Northern Illinois). Missouri Valley Football has a total of 44 victories against FBS schools since 1985, including at least one every year from 1996 through Schools have won games against FBS opponents in back-to-back seasons 11 different times: UNI ( ); Youngstown State ( ); UNI ( ); Western Illinois ( ); Western Illinois ( ); Southern Illinois ( ); North Dakota State ( ); and Western Illinois ( ). In 2012, North Dakota State became the only league team to beat an FBS opponent three-straight years (and that streak is currently 6 in a row). In 2012, Illinois State (at Eastern Michigan) and North Dakota State (at Colorado State), defeated FBS schools on the same date (Sept. 8, 2012). It marked the third time in league history that MVFC teams posted multiple FBS wins on the same date (2001 and 2007 were the other years.) In 2016, the MVFC established a league record with 4 wins against FBS schools in the same season. Illinois State beat Northwestern, North Dakota State beat Iowa, UNI defeated Iowa State, and Western Illinois topped Northern Illinois. 8 OPPONENTS VS. NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS, by League In 2007, UNI established a league record by winning six road games (tied by Illinois State in 2012 and Western Illinois in 2017). Only 21 teams in league history have won five road games in a season and all of them reached the playoffs. Before UNI in 2007, no previous conference team had claimed six road victories in a season, although Western Kentucky (2002), Youngstown State (1997) and North Dakota State (2011, 2013, 2014) all won six away from home in a season and each won the national title in those respective seasons.
