All are invited to come out and celebrate our country s independence in a spectacular way with two full days of fire-cracking festival fun at one of the biggest fourth of July celebrations in the area. On July 3, a full music line up on the Rock, White & Blue main stage will feature this year s headliner Theory of a Deadman, treating concert-goers to their masterful performance and riveting music. A RWB VIP package is available that includes exclusive access to the front row section of the Main Stage. On both days, there is a main stage with national, regional and local bands performing and thrilling carnival rides and games; as well as an abundance of delicious festival food and refreshing beverages (from local area vendors). Children of all ages will have plenty to do in the award-winning Kids Zone, featuring tons of exciting hands on activities including SeaPerch/Stem building, a petting zoo, an indoor rock wall, as well as a full line-up of live entertainment acts. Festival-goers also will enjoy bingo for prizes, pro wrestling, a paintball arena, military exhibits; plus roving performers and costumed characters that will be on site working the crowds! Both nights conclude with spectacular fireworks that will be choreographed to music. On July 3, the Rock, White and Blue fireworks display will begin at 10:45 p.m., and on July 4, visitors are promised a must see fireworks extravaganza that will begin at 9:30 p.m. The Naval Station Great Lakes is located off of Sheridan Road. The festival offers free parking and no admission charge. Join in and celebrate our freedom and patriotism at this, fun-for-all-ages, open-to-the-public, celebration July 3 and 4. Recognizing Military Night On July 2, the MWR Depart ment is opening the 4th of July Celebration festival grounds for a special Military Night. This night is only open to military personnel and their families from 3 to 9 p.m. Festivalgoers may enjoy paintball, the Firecracker 5K Walk/Run and carnival LEFT: Enjoy a spectacular fireworks display at 10:45 p.m. July 3 and a fireworks extravaganza at 9:30 p.m. July 4 at the Naval Station Great Lakes 4th of July Celebration at Ross Field. These spectacular fireworks shows are sure to be one of the biggest fireworks displays North of Chicago and South of Milwaukee. MWR rides and games. The carnival will offer a special wristband promotion during Military Night, so the whole family may experience rides at a discounted price. A variety of festival food and beverages will be on-site. 3 GREAT LAKES MARINA Bldg. 13 (lakefront), ; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon. to Thurs. and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fri. to Sun. GREAT LAKES CHILD AND YOUTH PROGRAM The marina is now accepting applications for both wet and dry boat slips. The wet slips are available for 30 foot piers that include water and 30 amp. of electric. The dry slips consist of storage on boat trailers that include the use of the launch ramp. Also available are EZ port dry slips for wave runners that can be operated on and off a rolling pier rather than having to launch and retrieve after every use. The marina is offering a special discount on the rental of two EZ Ports for the season. For those with a larger sailboat or power boat, the Marina s outer harbor 3 area on buoy anchors is another mooring option. The marina also has a fuel dock and pump out station. See MARINA, page 7 Bldg. 2700, ; Bldg. 3110, ; Bldg. 8801, ; and Great Lakes Youth Center, Bldg. 8190, The Great Lakes Child and Youth Program offers care for children of all ages within the Child Development Centers including before and after school age care, summer and holiday day camps, special events and youth and teen programming, such as open recreation and day trips. SAC and the youth and teen programs are affiliated with the Boys and Girls Club of America and 4-H. Youth sports and fitness, along with instructional and recreational classes and programs, all fall under the Great Lakes Child and Youth Program. Child Care Services Child Development Center and School Age care Reserve space for hourly care Parents Night Out is $16 and will be from 7 to 11 p.m. June 8 for ages 6 weeks to 12 at either Child Development Centers or the Great Lakes Youth Center. Registration deadline is June 1. Youth and teen programs Fun activities that foster character and leadership, health and life skills, the arts, sports and recreation, education and career development and technology. Youth Center is open from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday for Youth (ages 9 to 12) and 3 to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday for Teens (ages 13 to 18). Girls Club Passport to Manhood Club Youth sports and activities All registered youth that are participating in the Youth Sports and Fitness Program must be signed in and out of the facility. Ages 3 to 9 must be signed in and out and accompanied by a parent or an authorized designee. Ages 10 to 18 are authorized and required to sign themselves in and out. Start Smart Baseball: The free program will be Wednesdays, July 11 to Aug. 22, for ages 3 to 4. Preballet and Dance & Tumbling: The program will be from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, June 18 to July 16, for ages 3 to 6. It costs $25 for five sessions. Registration is required by June 15. Grade School Ballet, Tap and Interpretive Dance: The program will be from 5:35 to 6:20 p.m. Mondays, June 18 to July 16, for ages 7 and older. It costs $25 for five sessions. Registration is required by June 11. Volunteers: The next training session will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 for baseball. Training sessions will take place at the Great Lakes Youth Center. Youth Sports and Fitness needs volunteers for the ongoing sports leagues and programs. Stop by the Great Lakes Youth Center to pick up an application and sign up for training today. 7 WILLOW GLEN GOLF CLUB Bldg (Golf Course, Pro Shop and Buckley s Restaurant), The Willow Glen Golf Club is home to a picturesque 18-hole layout that provides a challenge for all skill levels. Practice facilities include a driving range with natural grass tee stations and a putting green. A clubhouse with a golf shop and a restaurant com plements the golf course aesthetics, making Willow Glen one of the finest facilities in the Navy. Ladies Nights Out in June Grab a group of ladies and enjoy a night out at Willow Glen at any of the following Fridays: June 1, 8 and 15. The program will run from 4 to 6 p.m. The cost is $20, which includes 45-minutes of golf instruction in a relaxed social environment and two drink vouchers at Buckley s Restaurant and Lounge. Rental clubs are available at no charge. Class sizes are limited to 12 ladies per session. Call the Golf Shop at to sign up. Rates released Fees and charges for the Willow Glen Golf Club in 2018 will remain a great deal! Military personnel may play 18 holes for as little as $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends. Contact the Golf Shop at for details. Permanent weekend tee times Applications are being accepted for permanent tee times Saturday and Sunday mornings. Permanent tee times only will be issued to complete foursomes. There is a one-time fee charged for each player. Leagues and outings Prime dates are available for leagues and group outings for the 2018 season. Contact the Golf Shop at for course availability and information before the calendar begins to fill. Free Military Kids Clinics In conjunction with Revelation Golf, Willow Glen will be hosting free golf clinics for military children this summer. The program will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. every Wednesday, June 20 to Aug. 8 (excluding July 4). Boys and girls ages 6 to 16 are eligible. Instruction will be provided by LPGA/PGA golf professionals, and clubs will be provided. Sign-up is already underway. Registration forms are available at the golf shop and must be completed. Multiplay discount cards/passes Season passes and 10-play punch cards are on sale at the Golf Shop. These passes are restricted to weekdays, and after 1 p.m. on weekends and holidays. 7 Pass holders receive half-priced green fees at peak times on Sat urdays, Sundays and holidays. Season passes and punch cards are available for all customers. Punch cards can be purchased with or without the use of a golf cart. Buckley s opens Buckley s is open daily for lunch. Full menu lunch service is available from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to November. A more limited menu is offered during the afternoons and evenings. Private parties are available. The setting is comfort able and attractive, and the service and food is exceptional. MARINA Continued from page 3 Sailing school The Marina will be offering a Basic Mate A Sailing class beginning in June and is recognized by US Sailing as a certified sailing school. Successful completion of the classroom and on water skills gets students a US Sailing Certified Light Air Qualification. Instruction is taught on American 14 sailboats. Basic Mate A Sailing Class Session 1 6 to 9 p.m. June 7 and 8 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 9 9 a.m. to noon June 10 (inclement weather reschedule date) Keel Boat Class The first big boat sailing class is from June 21 to 24. This class will be taught on Colgate 26-foot sailboats. Junior Sailing Camp The Marina s Junior Sailing Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 23 to 26. The 4-day camp is set up for youth ages 10 through 15. The camp will focus on water safety, swim testing, team building and learning the basics of small boat, lite air sailing. Participants must sign the sailing waiver. U.S. Powerboating Course The Marina is offering its next Safe Powerboat Handling Course of the season from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 23 and 24 (see full list schedule). This is a comprehensive 16-hour course for anyone who would like to learn how to safely operate a small powerboat and improve their boat handling skills. Safe powerboat handling combines classroom instruction with practical training and is taught by a certified U.S. powerboat handling instructor. Successful completion of the course gets students an official U.S. Powerboating Certification. These courses are limited to six persons per session. All courses run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional course dates July 21 and 22 Aug. 18 and 19 Sept. 15 and 16 Boat launch permits available The marina is selling launching permits for both daily and seasonal use. Come to the marina and register your boat for a seasonal pass that will allow you unlimited access to Lake Michigan big water. Propane refueling The Propane Refueling Station is an excellent convenience for those customers working on the base to be able to fill their standard 20 pound tanks (common backyard grills). In addition, large RV and camper tanks may also be filled at the refueling station. RV Park The 20-site RV Park is open yearround on Lake Michigan. The RV sites are equipped with electric only. The facility features a bowling center, Legends Sports Club, a movie theater, Spinz restaurant, amusements, billiards as well as live entertainment (Live@525), which is programmed on a regular basis with comedians, bands, DJs, pay-per-view events and other special happenings throughout the year. 9 SAMUEL ADAMS BREWHOUSE Bldg. 140, Wednesday karaoke Karaoke is scheduled from 6:30 to 10 p.m. June 13 and 27 at the Samuel Adams Brewhouse. Everyone is invited to come and sing their heart out at these fun-loving events. Do not miss it! GREAT LAKES LIBRARY Bldg. 617, ; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mon. to Thurs., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fri. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat. The Great Lakes Library offers a wide selection of items for check-out including books, audio books, DVDs and magazines, plus all the books featured in the Navy Professional Reading Program as well as college and career materials. Not sure what to read this summer? Stop in and pick up your copy of Book Page, a magazine highlighting and reviewing the newest releases. Services available include computers with internet access, free wireless internet for personal devices, printing, copying and scanning. The children s area features the AWE Early Literacy Station with online programs to help develop skills in reading, math, and other areas. Summer reading program The library s summer reading program Reading Takes You Everywhere, kicks off June 4. Beginning on that day, children and adults can stop in the library to register. Each week, there will be a new children s activity and prize. The program runs through Aug. 4. Children s story time Stories and crafts will take place at 10 a.m. June 20. Online resources Free resources such as magazines, foreign language learning, newspapers, ebooks and classes are available through the Navy Digital Library for use at home or on your mobile devices. 9

10 10 MWR SPORTS & AQUATICS Fieldhouse-Bldg. 440, ; 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mon. to Thurs., 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fri., 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat. and Sun. Summer Kickoff 5K Race, 2K Walk The Captain s Cup Race Series is free to participants and open to all hands. This is the fourth race of the series, which takes place at 5 p.m. June 12. Runners are encouraged to wear Hawaiian or beach-themed outfits. After the race, everyone may participate in water activities, Hula- Hoop contests and more. Plus, a slip n slide will be set up on site for extra excitement. Runners must register before the race at Bldgs. 440, 4 and 2A. Race day check-in is required before 4:30 p.m. at the Marina Beach House, which is where the race starts. Age categories are 19 and younger, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 plus for both genders. Command teams also will be accepted for the 2018 Captain s Cup series, and must register at Bldg. 4 prior to race day. A team will consist of five runners from the same command to earn Captain s Cup points. The team with the most points will win the over all season title. Plus, any command with the most runners per race will receive a special award from MWR. Summer Kickball Tournament June 20 and 21: This is a free one day event and is open to all eligible MWR cus tomers. Registration is due by June 19 at Bldg A participant s meeting will be at 5 p.m. June 19 at the Fieldhouse. Firecracker Softball Tournament June 27: This is a free one day event and is open to all eligible MWR customers. Registration is due by June 25 at Bldg A participant s meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. June 25 at the Fieldhouse. Captain s Cup Corn Hole tourney June 28: This is a free one day event at 5 p.m. It is open to all eligible MWR cus tomers. Registration is due by June 27 at Bldg A coaches/managers meeting will be at 5 p.m. June 27 at the Fieldhouse. Teams of three are required to participate. 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament July 16: This is a free one day event and is open to all eligible MWR cus tomers. Registration is due by July 13 at Bldg A participant s meeting will be at 5 p.m. July 13 at the Fieldhouse. Captain s Cup Softball League July 30: This is a free league. It is open to all eligible MWR cus tomers. Registration is due by July 24 at Bldg A coaches/managers meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. July 24 at the Fieldhouse. Captain s Cup Soccer League July 31: This is a free league. It is open to all eligible MWR customers. Registration is due by July 18 at Bldg A coaches/managers meeting will be at 5 p.m. July 12 at the Fieldhouse. Aquatics The indoor pool is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday for lap swim. Open swim is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday. The aquatics team is hiring for seasonal and regular flex lifeguards. Nunn Beach: Watch for upcoming details on opening weekend. It will open at noon June 1, weather dependent. During the summer months when Nunn Beach is in operation, the indoor pool will only open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays when poor beach swimming conditions exist (forcing the beach to close). Check out the MWR Great Lakes Facebook page for weekend status updates regarding the beach and pool. Lake Bluff pool passes Ask about Lake Bluff pool passes on sale now at the Bldg. 440, 4 and 2A. Navy Wounded Warrior The Safe Harbor Program is the Navy s lead organization for coordinating nonmedical care of wounded, ill and injured sailors, coast guardsmen and their families. Providing a lifetime of individually tailored assistance designed to optimize the success of recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration activities. Special features of the Center include a full weight room with 75 weight machines, 10,500 pounds of free weights, and a wide variety of cardiovascular equipment for your convenience.
