As the temperature becomes cooler and the foliage colors are gradually turning into red, yellow, brown and orange; I see these stunning colors in each one of you, sharing different skills and strength in your area of teaching that brings forth life and delight of music within our community! Thank you very much for your commitment in music and continued membership with MTNA and CAPMT. As we welcome the new season, we anticipate this change of season to bring us new dreams and energy, both professionally and personally. Congratulations to Julie Poklewski for starting her term as the new president of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter this fall after completing her position as our district coordinator. 2 GREETINGS FROM THE SANTA CLARA VALLEY PRESIDENT Welcome to another year of music! I am looking forward to serving the Santa Clara Valley Chapter as its new president for the coming year. Our past president Arleen Pickett has done an incredible job of making the Santa Clara Chapter the success that it is today every month, we have opportunities for your students to take part in recitals, competitions, festivals. Teachers also have the opportunity to attend enriching lectures with invited guests presenting on various pedagogical topics. I invite you all to take a look at the calendar of events that the chapter has to offer, and to make this the most inspiring year of music teaching yet. I very much look forward to working with the board and am very grateful for their willingness to serve such important roles. Warm wishes for a wonderful year, Julie Poklewski President, Santa Clara Valley Chapter Hello San Francisco Chapter Members, UPDATE FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO PRESIDENTS Our chapter has been a quiet one the last few years, but we are looking forward to starting up some more programs to serve you and your students! Please don't hesitate to reach out and let us know what types of programs and events would be most beneficial and interesting to you. Keep an eye on your inbox, we are planning a teacher meeting for late September and will be sending out more details soon. We are looking forward to getting to know you, and in the meantime, here is a little bit about us. Jeremy Pass: I have been in San Francisco teaching private piano lessons full-time since 2007, split between my home studio and Inspire Music Center. I have been a CAPMT/MTNA member for about 4 years, and have enjoyed attending local, state, and national conferences. Now I can't wait to invigorate the SF Chapter! I look forward to establishing and fine-tuning support networks for teachers, students, and parents alike. Luba Kravchenko: I have been teaching piano in the Pre-College at the San Francisco Conservatory since 2005 as well as maintaining a private studio, directing the music program at Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church, and working as an accompanist for the San Francisco Arts Education Project. I am also involved with the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program, both as a member of the College of Examiners and as the San Francisco Center Representative. I have been a member of MTNA and CAPMT for many years, and am excited to step into a leadership role. We look forward to seeing you later this fall! Happy teaching, Jeremy Pass and Luba Kravchenko, SF Chapter Co-Presidents

6 Santa Clara Valley Chapter The California Association of Professional Music Teachers, Inc. Festival Recital Guidelines and Procedures Dear Student performers, Parents, Teachers and Friends, The Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers welcomes you to our Festival Recital Series. We would like you to review the following guidelines and procedures to ensure the recitals will proceed as smoothly as possible. ALL RECITALS WILL BEGIN PROMPTLY AT THEIR SCHEDULED TIMES. NO EXCEPTIONS. DRESS CODE/PERFORMER GUIDELINES PRIOR TO THE RECITAL Female performers should wear a minimum of knee length skirts or dresses, or dressy slacks and blouses all with dress shoes (non-athletic). Male performers should wear dress slacks, a dress shirt and dress shoes (non-athletic). Suits, sport jackets, sweaters and ties are not required, but welcome. Please, no food or gum chewing. ARRIVAL All students are to arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before their scheduled recital begins. Each student must check in with the recital registrar to receive seating instructions. You will be seated in order of performance. Please warm up at home as there are no provisions for warm up at the university prior to the recital. Use the rest rooms on the first floor. Clean hands are essential. DURING THE RECITAL PERFORMER The purpose of your performance is to EXPRESS-not impress. You are here to share the progress made in your lessons and practice time, and to share music. When the student before you has completed his bow, please walk with purpose to the piano. In front of the bench, turn and face the audience and bow with both hands at your sides, and with a smile on your face. Adjust the bench to fit you. Place your hands in your lap and think how your music is going to sound; dynamics, tempo, notes. Then lift your hands to the keyboard and play with expression. When you have finished, place your hands back into your lap, and then stand and bow again to your audience to acknowledge their applause for a perormance well done. AUDIENCE In the spirit of courtesy to our performers, please turn off all cellular phones, pagers, watches and computer games. Flash photography is not permitted during the recital. There will be ample opportunity for you to flash photo your student after the recital. However, video cameras may be used discreetly from the rear of the concert hall if they are quiet and unobtrusive. Let s give our students every opportunity to perform at their best without distractions. Food and/or beverages are prohibited in the concert hall. Performers, families and teachers are expected to remain for the entire recital. If you have other commitments for the evening, please sign up for a different month. Remember, the last student is as deserving of a full audience as the first student. Parents and invited guests with small children are responsibile for their good behavior. If a child is unable to sit quietly, please arrange for a sitter at home, or make a quick and quiet exit to eliminate the distraction. Recitals are planned to provide a balance of musical selections, age groups and teachers. Since scheduling is a time consuming process, there will be no changes in the program order. The Santa Clara Fire Marshal requires all aisles to remain clear of people and equipment during a performance. The result of your cooperation in following these guidelines will provide wonderful, professional programs. Respectfully, the Santa Clara Valley Chapter Board of Directors
