1 B ND Administrators/Principals: PLEASE FORWARD TO YOUR BAND TEACHER. IF THERE IS NO BAND PROGRAM, PLEASE MAKE THIS INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-9. MANY THANKS! Dear Administrators, Band Directors, and Private Teachers: The University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music is pleased to offer outstanding Southern Arizona student musicians the opportunity to participate in an enriching semester with the UA Outreach Honor Band. This Saturday-morning concert band is open to motivated band students in grades 6 through 9 by audition-only each semester. Please give interested students a copy of the attached flier, or please forward this to a music teacher or parent who might be interested. REGISTRATION Register here: Auditions will be held at UA Fred Fox School of Music in Room 170 on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 8:00 A.M. We will put on an outstanding concert for the public at the end of the semester in beautiful Crowder Hall at the U of A on December 10, AUDITION INFORMATION All musicians (new and returning) must complete the on-line application from the link above prior to the audition date in order to be considered for membership in the UA Outreach Honor Band. My goal is that no student be turned away who is capable, so please make sure that all potential members prepare adequately for their auditions. Membership and chair placement is based on the following: Results of a placement audition: playing a prepared piece of the student s choice (30-60 seconds), sight-reading, minimum 2 octave chromatic scale (starting on any note), and major scales up to 3 flats and 3 sharps (in the instruments key, not transposed) Instrumentation balance/needs FEES Semester tuition is due at the first rehearsal after auditions to cover the cost of new music, rehearsal facilities fees, concert hall fees, concert programs, and staff. The registration fee must be paid in the form of check or money order only, made out to The University of Arizona. Tax Credit and parent group funds may also be used to cover student registration fees. Costs for student members per semester are: $85 for new members $75 for returning members $65 per student for families with more than one child in the band I look forward to another rewarding semester for the UA Outreach Honor Band. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for being interested in this program to enrich our band students musicianship! Sincerely, Dr. Karin K. Nolan Assistant Professor of Music Education Coordinator of Outreach Band, Fred Fox School of Music Coordinator of Field Experiences, UA College of Fine Arts Enclosures: Directors Packet with Outreach Honor Band Fliers and Schedule

3 Outreach Band Auditions Fall Semester: Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 8:00 AM Spring Semester: Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 8:00 AM Students should practice scales and a solo passage of their choice to be prepared for this audition. Most students who can read music, play rhythms accurately, and produce a good solid tone on their instrument are accepted into the group. We want to keep the musicianship level high in this group, so beginning students, those who cannot read music, or those who have too many conflicts on Saturday mornings may not be accepted but should still audition. Students check in outside the U of A Fred Fox School of Music Room 170 starting at 8:00 AM on audition day (see above for dates). Students assemble instruments and warm up in room 170 until 8:45 AM. Each audition lasts approximately 3-5 minutes and will consist of the following: o 2 major scales (extra points for playing scales 2-octaves), selected from: Eb, Bb, F, C, G, D, or A Major (not transposed) o chromatic scale (at least two octaves, starting on any note) o student s prepared piece/solo (approx seconds; music can be ANYTHING that the student has prepared, such as an etude, previous band music, passage from a method book or a solo book, etc.) o sight reading passage (provided by the coach at the audition) Any student who misses the audition or arrives too late may not be selected for the group or may be placed at the end of the section, at the director s discretion and depending on instrument needs. Within a couple of days, students and parents will be notified of results via . Any student that is accepted in the group should plan on arriving for the first rehearsal the following Saturday with their instruments, pencils, and payment for the semester (check or money order only made out to "The University of Arizona"). Please see fees below: o New Member: $85 o Returning Member: $75 o Member with a sibling also in the group: $65 Example of score sheet: Criteria: Scale 1: Points possible: Student 1: 10 (1 octave) 15 (2 octaves) Scale 2: 10 (1 octave) 15 (2 octaves) Chrom.
