2 Taking Students There The Foundation helps expand learning opportunities by funding transportation needs for educational field trips. Teachers are always seeking to expand students learning opportunities. Often times such expansion entails taking young learners beyond campus boundaries where they can be immersed in content through a tangible learning experience. Business Entrepreneurship The students in Business Teacher Allen Kennedy s Entrepreneurship class prepare for a project-based assessment in which student groups would create a business model for an indoor hydroponic farm that will be located at Maui High. To aide in their preparation, Kennedy coordinated a corresponding site observation field trip and sought funds to cover the transportation expense. My teaching practices have followed a handson approach to learning. It is important that my students have opportunities to learn through experiences and visit businesses that have been successful. Higher learning is usually gained through stimulating all five senses, he explains. New Fundraising Efforts The Foundation ventures down new fundraising avenues in 2016 to raise more funds for Maui High. MHS Programs participating in 2017 Charity Walk Band DECA AOHT Business Pathway ACOM Pathway HOSA Best Buddies National History Day PACC Interact Robotics Please support our walkers! The Foundation was pleased to provide financial assistance to Kennedy s efforts. On November 10th the class traveled to Maui s west side to Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. On this visit the students toured the on-site aquaponic farm established by Napili FLO Farm, learned about green initiatives and responsible practices followed by the Westin s Food & Beverage department, learned about the farm to table process, and sampled foods prepared with greens grown right there at the Westin. Arts & Communications Maui High faculty teams within the six available pathways strive to involve students with interdisciplinary units. Curriculum that stretches across various fields of study demonstrate to students that learning is fluid among the different subject areas, whether core or elective. This year, to promote Science and Mathematics, the teachers of the ACOM Academy planned a whale watch experience with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Not only did the students, many of whom have never been on a boat, get to experience the true majesty and awesome power of some of nature s largest wonders, but they also took part in an interdisciplinary unit that involved data collection, analysis, calculation, write up, and data plotting through an infographic. The foundation was pleased to subsidize one-third of the projected cost per student for this educational excursion. Maui Visitor Industry Charity Walk In May 2016, the Foundation collaborated with MHS programs to raise funds through participation in the Visitor Industry Charity Walk (VICW). Collectively, the statewide charity walk fundraiser reported raising over 2 million dollars, with the Maui walk raising nearly half of the total proceeds to benefit local non-profit organizations across Maui. The Foundation received a donation of $12,148 from the Charity Walk through participation in this event which is locally sponsored by the Maui Hotel & Lodging Association (MHLA). MHS programs that participated in collaboration with the MHS Foundation in the 2016 Charity Walk include ACOM, FCCLA, HOSA, & Robotics. Students in these programs went out and solicited donations for the Charity Walk on behalf of the Foundation that would later be put toward funding their respective program needs. In total, students in these programs raised $5,718 from various donors. MHLA also awarded an additional $1000 to the Foundation to benefit Maui High Graphics for the program s support services in relation to the execution of the Charity Walk. A portion of the proceeds received from this fundraising effort has been earmarked to help sustain the six $1,000 CTE scholarships awarded annually by the Foundation to deserving seniors in Maui High CTE programs. Below are some examples of ads featured in our HOH Program booklet. Hall of Honor Awards Booklet The Annual Hall of Honor Awards Banquet serves as the Foundation s largest fundraiser of the year. With proceeds steadily growing each year, the 2016 Hall of Honor Committee introduced a Hall of Honor Awards program booklet as yet another fundraising element of the event. The inaugural 44-page full-color student designed layout featured 2016 Honoree bios, photos of all of our Honorary Sabers, photos from past Hall of Honor events, and advertisements from MHS supporters. Ad space sold for $150 full-page, $100 half-page, and $50 business card. Ad buyers used their ad space for various reasons, such as to congratulate an honoree(s), to represent an alumni class or group of alumni, to advertise their business, or in honor of a past Saber. A total of 30 advertisement spaces in the booklet were purchased by supporting classes, businesses, and individuals - Mahalo! To reserve your space for the 2017 booklet foundation@mauihigh.org!

3 MHS CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS CLUBS PLAY ESSENTIAL ROLE IN HELPING STUDENTS THRIVE 1 2 Maui High School features 24 student clubs and organizations ranging from service clubs, academic or skills-based clubs, or clubs based on interpersonal dynamics. This does not include the numerous athletic teams the large school is able to field. The provision of a broad scope of co-curricular and extracurricular student organizations play a key role in the ability of a school to prepare students for life beyond high school. Benefits of joining a club(s) in high school Fosters a student s creative, social and/or physical skills Motivates students to strengthen time management and organizational skills. The discipline that club involvement impresses upon students often lead to better grades Interest based activities offer students a break from the daily academic grind and can help relieve stress or tension in school Strengthens self-esteem Teaches teamwork. Understanding how to work well with others promotes a lifetime of positive relationships. Increases exposure to leadership opportunities Minimizes dropout and discipline problems Teaches citizenship Often forms mentorships among members and peer leaders or adult advisors Offers new experiences and often times opens up travel opportunities for students within the state, nation, and even around the world SABERS LEARN SERVICE 3 Majority of Maui High student organizations engage their members in community service at some point within the school year. 1. Robotics MHS Robotics participate at the Maui Electric Energy Fair held at Queen Kaahumanu Center. The club provided robotics demonstrations and offered keiki the educational yet fun activity of driving their VEX robots. (August 2016) The Saber Marching Band & Color Guard is gearing up for a trip to the northeast. In November 2017 the 150+ members strong program will travel to Indiana to participate for the first time ever in the Bands of America Grand National Championships! Their list of fundraising efforts are extensive. From chili to shave ice, from cookbooks to ads, the Band is working hard to raise the funds needed to experience this educational performance opportunity. MHS Video Club participates annually in the Student Television Network Convention. This year the event takes them to Anaheim, CA. The video club, under the Arts and Communications Pathway, has engaged in numerous fundraisers, such as smoothie sales, photobooth and video services, and more. 2. Interact Interact club members volunteer at the 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer s Maui event. (September 2016) 4 3. Voyaging Members of MHS Voyaging Club help out at a community work day to clean up trash along Front St. in Lahaina. (October 2016) 6 FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) 1 student advances to national competition in Nashville, Tennessee in July. 6. Key Club Students in MHS Key Club volunteer at a Food Drive for Maui Food Bank held at Maui Lani Safeway. (November 2016) However, as we all know, neighbor island schools in Hawaii bear the added burden of high travel expense when student organizations endeavor to travel. A high number of MHS student organizations provide travel opportunities for its students throughout the year, thus yielding an endless string of fundraisers. We have many student clubs gearing up to travel this year. MHS Robotics competes in FIRST Robotics competitions each year. In 2017, 36 team members travel to Ventura CA & Honolulu HI in March to participate in regional events. The group solicits sponsors and applies for grants to raise funding for competition season. They also annually fundraise through their Breakfast & Rummage Sale. SKILLS USA 4 students advance to national competition in Louisville, Kentucky in June. 5. AOHT Members of MHS Academy of Hospitality and Tourism help with setup and execution of Maui County s 3rd Annual Made in Maui Festival at the MACC. (November 2016) While school clubs play a big role in facilitating well-rounded youth development, most clubs come with little or no expense to the school s overall budget. Faculty members VOLUNTEER their time to run a club and club members generally pay club dues or fundraise to cover basic club expenses. MHS Academy of Hospitality and Tourism head to Los Angeles and Anaheim during Spring Break 2017 to execute their senior members familiarization project. This year 8 senior members are on board to participate in this 100% learn from experience opportunity. Students sold brownies in 3rd quarter to help offset trip expense. MHS CTE Programs Nearly 200 students from amongst our various Career & Technical Education Pathways travelled to Oahu in February to participate in the State Career & Technical Student Organizations Convention. Here they competed in various fields, categories, and events against other students throughout the state. Several of our students secured top placement and advance to National competition which takes place over the summer. 4. ACOM MHS Arts & Communication students assist with the Keiki Costume Contest at Maui Mall s Halloween Carnival. (October 2016) 5 MHS Choir will be traveling to Anaheim CA in April to participate in the Choirs of America Festival. Approximately 35 students have been actively fundraising for this trip through chocolate bars, zippy tickets, cookbooks, car washes, and a craft fair. DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) 2 students advance to national competition in Anaheim, CA at the end of April. Maui High DECA has also won Hawaii s Best DECA Chapter for the fourth straight year. DECA HOSA (Future Health Professionals) All participants in HOSA are eligible to attend the HOSA International Leadership Conference, Orlando, Florida in June. Want to make a contribution to one of Maui High s outstanding student clubs? It s easy! Just make a donation ONLINE or by mail and simply designate the student organization you d like your gift to benefit!

4 CLASS ACTION Class of 1966 Celebrates 50th Class Reunion The Class of 1966 celebrated their 50th class reunion last October. The milestone reunion motivated fifty-eight spirited Sabers to come home for the festivities, with some travelling from as far as Kentucky, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, and California. HALL OF HONOR AWARDS On October 18, 2016 spirited Saber supporters filled the Maui Beach Elleair ballroom to capacity as the Foundation presented Maui High s 6th Annual Hall of Honor Awards. The program featured a silent auction, dinner, testimonies from current Maui High students across various Pathway programs, and of course, induction of our amazing class of 2016 Honorees: Harriette Holt, Charlotte Boteilho, Grant Chun, James Kidoguchi, Dr. Frank Baum, & Dr. Colleen Inouye Baum. Once again, class of 1966 s Curtis Lee hosted the event, creating waves of laughter throughout the night with his unparalleled wit and humor. Among the highlights of the evening was the acceptance speech delivered by Award of Excellence recipient Charlotte Boteilho. Packed with humorous personal stories, insightful words of advice, and heartfelt gratitude, the speech from the former English teacher rightfully reciprocated a thunderous standing ovation from the crowd. According to committee planning members, seats to the Hall of Honor event sold out a month in advance. Annual event sponsors are key to the success of the event and are responsible for nearly 60% of the event s total revenue. The repeated full house has prompted event planners to look for a larger venue for Sponsorship and ticket sales for 2017 are expected to be available by July To learn more about becoming a sponsor for our Hall of Honor, please contact event chair Erin Clapper at (808) For advance ticket reservations, hallofhonor@mauihigh.org. Every year the Hall of Honor shares the remarkable stories of honorary Sabers from among the school s 100+ years of history. These are stories of individuals who have gone on to become trailblazers, innovators, leaders, contributors, inspirators, and more. The Foundation knows there are many unknown stories yet to be shared. We need all of your help to uncover them. Tell us about a Saber Alumni, Faculty, or Supporter who stands above the rest in one of the five pillars of the Maui High School Hall of Honor. To submit a nomination visit > MHS Hall of Honor > Hall of Honor Nominations. Nominations received by March 31st are considered for the current year s awards. Maui Land and Pineapple Company Munekiyo Hiraga The three-day reunion weekend included visits to both the former Maui High School campus at Hamakuapoko as well as the current campus in Kahului. On their visit to Maui High School the alumni group was taken on a student-guided tour of the campus, which ended with school lunch in the faculty lounge. Maui High s Student Activities Coordinator, Mrs. Joyo, shared with a smile, the group had positive comments about our school, the different programs we have, and how advanced things have become. It s so nice, when they talk about Maui High, you can really see the pride that they have in this school. Other daytime reunion activities included Golf on Friday and a visit to Makawao Veterans Cemetery on Saturday. Dinner gatherings at Heritage Hall in Paia and then Maui Beach Hotel the following night were also in the weekend s line up. It included a whole lot of talk story time, games and prizes, some dancing, and of course picture taking! The weekend wrapped up with breakfast at Tante s at Maui Seaside Hotel. Alumni Support More and more alumni are organizing their peers to support the Foundation as a Class! The Foundation is grateful to have received the support of the following classes in 2016: Class of 1966 donated $2000 to our Scholarship program and $1966 to general funds. Class of 1967 donated $1000 to benefit MHS Athletics. Class of 1993 purchased a class table at Hall of Honor. The following classes purchased an ad in our Hall of Honor program booklet: Class of 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1979, 1997, and All in all the weekend was a relaxing one for the 66 alumni. One attendee shared, Everyone was friendly and happy to see each other. It was great to remember things we did in high school and most of all to feel 18 years old again! A unique element of this reunion was a silent auction. Event planners told us they had so many prize donations that they decided to auction some off. The proceeds of the auction was then combined with additional donations from the class and presented as a gift to the Foundation in the special amount of $1966! Class of 1966 Celebrates 50th Class Reunion Class Reunions We would be glad to publish details about upcoming class reunions or help the class in arranging a Class gift. Send us reunion information, class website links, or photos of your reunions to be shared on our Foundation website or for future Foundation Newsletters! details to foundation@mauihigh.org. ALUMNI SUPPORT is the beating heart of the MHS Foundation! Mahalo to our supportive alumni and classes! The Class of 1976 celebrating their 40th reunion at The Dunes at Maui Lani.
