4 SILENT AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED Central & Illininois/Indiana Districts Combined Rose Show and Meetings September 16, 2017 MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN The major source of income for a district meeting/rose show is the Silent Auction. Please consider donating an item. At past auctions, theme baskets have been very popular. Examples: Taste of Italy (Italian pasta, wine, marina sauce, pasta bowl, bread); Going to the Movies (microwave popcorn, colorful small bowls, DVD); Cooking with the Grandkids ( small apron, cookbook with kid friendly recipes, measuring spoons & cups, spatula, sprinkles, cookie mix); ho-made jam and jelly; almost any home made bakery item (NOTICE A PATTERN OF FOOD???? grin). You can search You Tube on how to wrap the basket. Items don t necessarily need to be in a basket such as hand made items, rose bushes, pruners, loppers, fertilizer, etc. Bruce Davis has volunteered to co-ordinate donated items. To determine space, he would appreciate if you d notify him of your planned donation by August 15th; however, you may still bring items the day of the convention without prior notification. The main reason is to remove all the junk in the bush and leave 4 strong canes. Bushes get weakened with all this little growth that grows at the bottom of the bush. If you keep that out and focus on your main canes you will have a good bush. Pruning is to open the center of the bush to let light in. During the season it gets crowded in there. Keep all crossing canes cut. Crossing canes are the canes that go through the bush, rubbing on other canes Removing all diseased canes. Look at the cut you make. Look at the inner bark. Is it creamy white color? If not prune down until you see this creamy white color. Think of you stem as a bundle of drinking straws. If one straw gets plugged or two or more straws get plugged it affects everything above that area. I doubt you will have a bloom on that cane. Cut low instead of high. The new growth will support a big bloom. If you cut high the growth is not as strong. When the growth is coming on you decide if you want a spray or a single bloom. If you want a spray, remove the lead bud. If you want a single bloom remove all the side growth!! During the season, prune to remove any dangerous branches sticking out. During the season every time you cut a bloom, you are pruning the plant. Cut down to the second 5th leaflet. Just above the area where the leaf joins the stem. The new growth will come out there. Do not be afraid to prune, you will not hurt the plant. It's when you don't prune that causes 4

5 problems. Wear safety glasses when pruning, rose canes will take an eye out. I got scratched in the eye once when I was pruning a Climber. I thought I cut that cane, I didn't! OUCH!!! Also wear good goatskin gloves. Protect you hands!! Enjoy your roses! Question: I have a red rose climbing rose bush. Last year it bloomed very nicely and that was the end, only one bloom the whole summer. My rose bush just finished blooming and the roses are dying. Should I deadhead the roses, would that maybe be the reason the bush did not re-bloom last year? Years ago a red Climber came out on the market called Paul's Scarlet Climber. It bloomed heavily. It was a once a year bloomer, like some Old Garden Roses. It was such a great red Climber, that a breeder put ever blooming genes into that rose and came out with Blaze Climber, Now it bloomed all year. Now, your rose. If you had Blaze, it would send out new growth, and re-bloom. You said that you only had one bloom period last year. You have Paul's Scarlet Climber. Just go ahead and clip off the spent blooms. This Fall, do not cut the rose back. The rose blooms on last years growth. So if the bush is cut back, it will not bloom!!! Now you have some history as well as what is going on with your rose!! Have fun growing roses!! Please take some time to check the list of roses to be reviewed this year and make some notes about any that you might be growing. Then be sure to fill out the online form or mail in your results. The online form will be available July 1 st, however results are not due until Sept. 26th. This is a great way to share information about how newer varieties that have been marketed in the last two to four years perform in our area. 6 Rose Rosette Workshop PRESENTED BY THE KANSAS CITY ROSE SOCIETY Monday, August 21, :00-4:00 pm Jacob Loose Memorial Park--Garden Center Kansas City, MO Registration fee: $25 The American Rose Society has identified rose rosette disease as the greatest threat to the future of commercial and recreational growth and enjoyment of roses. The Kansas City Rose Society, in conjunction with the Mid-American Green Industry Council, will present and informational workshop which will feature three nationally recognized experts in the study of the disease in order to provide attendees with the most current research and management practices on rose rosette. SPEAKERS ARE: Dr. Mark Windham, University of Tennessee at Knoxville--Plant Pathologist whose research focuses on rose rosette epidemiology and management. Dr. Raymond Cloyd, Kansas State University-Entomologist and Extension specialist in horticultural entomology who has written and presented extensively on rose rosette. Dr. David Zlesak, University of Wisconsin at River Falls--Horticulturalist whose research focuses on woody plant pathology and breeding regionally adapted plant cultivars. The workshop fee covers all materials and a box lunch. One hour of Consulting Rosarian credit will be given for CR's in attendance.
