We were proud to present a City commendation to Joyce Linden for her achievements and service to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community on Friday, Sept. 25 in observance of Deaf Awareness Month. Joyce is a resident of Chatsworth and has worked for decades as a teacher specializing in special education and communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing students at Los Angeles schools, and at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). CSUN's Deaf Studies Department and the National Center on Deafness at CSUN are leading deaf institutions in the nation which we are proud to have in our community.

This free event is sponsored by our office, Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Traveling Veterans Memorial Exhibit Coming to the San Fernando Valley... In observance of Veteran s Day, Operation Gratitude is partnering with The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) to honor all those who have served in the military and all those who have mad the ultimate sacrifice for our countr From October 14 to 18, 2009, the AVTT will be in Van Nuys in suppo of the Operation Gratitude Holiday Care Package Drive. The AVTT Exhibit includes a September 11 tribute, a Cost of Freedom display o Gold Dog Tags identifying each service member killed since Vietnam and a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C displaying all 58,253 names of Americans killed in the Vietnam W The series of free events takes place at Operation Gratitude s headquarters a the Van Nuys National Guard Armory at the corner of Victory Blvd. and Louise Ave. At the same time, Operation Gratitude will be assembling care packages for Holiday Drive. All visitors to the AVTT Exhibit events older than 12 years a welcome to help assemble care packages or write letters of support to the troops. It is not a question of if, but when the Big One will hit, so everyone should have enoug food, water and medical supplies to be able to be self-sufficient for at least 7 hours. Every home and workplace should also have an emergency plan in place. Drop! Cover! Hold On! Thursday, Oct :15 am Everyone in California is invited to register as a participant in the ShakeOut Over 5.4 million Southern Californians participated in last year's ShakeOut. As a statewide drill in 2009, the goal is to double the number of participants To register visit (As of August 31, over 3.7 million participants are registered statewide!) Participating in the ShakeOut will help you to be prepared for a major earthquake. Having large numbers of participants also helps emergency planners and responders develop strategies and policies, which will help them be better prepared as well. So plan on a "Drop, Cover and Hold" exercise on Oct. 15, and use the opportunity to go over emergency plans and check your emergency supplies with your family and your workplace. It is a great way t support your local Police and get to know the LAPD Officer of Devonshire Community Police Station who protect and serve our community. For more information call (818) Dedicate a Memorial Brick for the Granada Hills Veteran's Memorial The Granada Hills Rotary Club is offering the opporunity to place a memorial brick in the walkway of their Veteran's Park memorial on Zelzah Ave. and Chatsworth St. in Granada Hills. We helped the Granada Hills Rotary Club secure funding for its project to install new landscaping and plants, a walkway, military flags, decorative lights, irrigation, and gazebo on the traffic triangle. With a $125 contribution, you can have a brick inscribed with a message of your choice to create a lasting memorial or recognition for a friend or loved one in the walkway. Every year the $1,000 Gelb Family Scholarships go to local high school students who are enrolled in the Police Explorers program and are pursuing a public safety career in Los Angeles. The Friends of the Mid-Valley Library Need Your Help... Our Deputy District Director John Bwarie works with a wide variety of community organizations and City Departments, including our public libraries. He reports that the Friends of the Mid-Valley Regional Branch Library is struggling with declining membership, and may not be able to continue their used book sales and used bookstore. Please join them at their next meeting, Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10:30 am at the Mid-Valley Library to discuss the future of the group. The Friends of the Mid-Valley Library is a volunteer organization that runs used book sales and a used book store to raise funds to support the Library. Since 1996, they have raised over $250,000 to help purchase new books and to pay for free programs at the Library such as music, readings and educational events.
