2 Associated Women To coordinate certain all-girl activities is the aim of the Associated Women Students of Boise Junior College. Each girl in school is given a chance to participate in projects of the organization. Among the various activities sponsored by the Associated Women this year past are the Big Sister Tea which was given September 19, the Sweetheart Ball, on February 14, candy-selling in the main hall every day until the Student Union Building opened March 3, the selling of defense stamps every Wednesday of school after war was declared in December, and various other money-making projects. Officers who ably led the women of Boise Junior College during the year were: president, Betty Mathews Thompson; vice-president, June Coffin; secretary, Betty Bush; treasurer, Regina Garmendia; social chairman, Jolene Leggat; advisor, Mrs. Ada Poirier Burke. 3 Cubes "Boost the Broncs Boost B.J.C. Boost Boise" are the aims of the B-Cubes, freshman girls' service organization. The club unites the freshman girls, gives them an interest in the college, and helps them become better adjusted to college life. Their social activities began with a chili supper. Later in the fall, they sponsored a cooked food sale and a card party. During the winter term, the organization arranged for a skiing instructional movie which was given at one of the student body assemblies. The most important event of the spring was the "Cotton Swing" dance. Another project of the B-Cubes was the fashion show early in the term. B-Cube officers for this year were: president, Margaret Badgley; vice-president, Shirley Kroeger; secretary, Ruth Hill; treasurer, Shirley West; advisor, Mrs. Pearle Reberger. 4 Valkyries The Valkyries is a sophomore women's honorary service organization for the school and the community. The name is derived from the middle ages legend of the women who carried wounded knights from the battlefield and administered first aid to them. Each year the club awards scholarships to students of Boise Junior College. This year scholarships were given to Jean Gardner, Dorothy Deary, Norma Gimlin, and Leona Belnap. Ushering at college functions, serving for A.A.U.W., selling candy at ball games, selling forget-me-nots for V.F.W., selling Christmas seals, Christmas party for underprivileged children of Boise, and the Valkyrie-of-the-Day schedule are some of the activities which these girls conducted. 5 Women's Athletic Association The Women's Athletic Association during its first year of organization has made a splendid record, which will be a challenge to students for the years to come. The aim of this club is to further the interest of girls in better physical education activities in Boise Junior College. Throughout the year seasonal sport activities have been held. During the fall term speedball, archery, and tennis were played. Basketball was the outstanding sport of the winter term. This sport was topped off with two exchange play-days with the College of Idaho. The spring activities consisted of softball, tennis, and archery. A coeducational playnight which was very well attended was given by the W.A.A. during the winter. On April 1 a banguet was given in honor of the new officers for the next year. Women's Athletic Association officers for have been: president, Joan Arriola; vice-president and treasurer, Bettye Smitchger; secretary, Betty Bush; commissioner of sports, Marjorie Priest; advisor, Miss Helen Lewis. 6 Intercollegiate Knights This year marks the second milestone in the history of the Golden Plume Chapter of the Intercollegiate Knights. Service, sacrifice, and loyalty lay the foundation upon which this men's service organization is founded. Ushering, taking tickets at football and basketball games, and supporting civic sponsored projects all help the club to realize its objectives. To begin the year's activities, the Knights sponsored the first Boise Junior College student directory ever published for the students' use. Their second annual formal dance was high-lighted by the crowning of Jolene Leggat as Golden Plume Duchess. "The Half and Half Dance" was given in cooperation with the Valkyries. A student body assembly sponsored by the group proved to be a big success. The year's officers were: duke, Tom Brooks; scribe, Clary Frazer; chancellor of the excheguer, Bob Cushing; historian, Dick Steele; advisor, Mr. Stanley Mittlestaedt. 7 German The outstanding activity of the German Club this year was the presentation of a Christmas play, "Stille Nacht." The club aims to promote a better understanding of German through the use of conversation and literature. Officers were: president, Greta Lindstedt; secretary, Art Johnston; treasurer, Dorothy Giesler; advisor, Dr. Robert de Neufville. French The major project of the French Club this year has been to help the Quakers in their French War Relief program. Funds were raised for this purpose by showing a French movie. The annual French play was "L'Homme Qui Espousa Une Femme Muette," "The Man Who Married a Dumb Wife." Club officers were: president, Inez Miniely; secretary, Betty Marley; treasurer, Annette Stewart; program chairman, Harold Thiederman; advisors, Mrs. Camille B. Power and Dr. Robert de Neufville. 8 Spanish La Liga Hispanoamericana is an organization of second and third year Spanish students. The most important project of the club is an annual presentation of a Spanish play, which this year was "Rosina Es Fragil," presented in the assembly building April 11, and at the College of Idaho April 23. The officers are: president, Carol Burnham; vice-president, Shirley Kroeger; secretary, Ruby Amillategui; treasurer, Charles Jensen; advisor, Mrs. Roland Power. Pre-Medic The Pre-Medic Club was organized by students as a means of promoting further interest in medicine. A Red Cross First Aid course was sponsored by the group during the spring term. They also visited the State Laboratories. An annual picnic was held at the close of the school year. Officers were: president, Alvin Randall; vice-president, Bill McFarlane; secretarytreasurer, Mildred Prescott; advisor, Mr. Dale Avery. To create a closer relationship between club members and Forest Service officials and to provide summer employment in the forests for the members are the aims of the Forestry Club. Social activities included a picnic in the fall, a skiing party, and a barbecue in the spring. Officers include: president, Duff Ross; vice-president, James Gray; secretary and treasurer, Dale Carringer; sergeant at arms, Densol Young; advisor, Robert Latimore. Engineers... The Associated Engineers of Boise Junior College was organized for the purpose of bringing together the freshman and sophomore engineering students to study the practical aspects of their future profession. Social activities included a picnic and the Engineers' Ball. During the spring term an assembly was sponsored by the group. Their officers were: president, Lee Miller; vice-president, Merrill Barnes; secretary and treasurer, Spencer Shortridge; advisor, Mr. Robert E. Baird. 47

The Home Economics Club, Eta Epsilon, was organized last year to promote further interest in the study of home problems. Any student enrolled as a Home Economics major is eligible to join. The club's two major projects for the year have been sewing for the Red Cross and making garments for the Children's Home. Officers were: presidents, June Coffin and Mary Scovell; vice-presidents, Evelyn Wilmot and June Coffin; secretaries, Betty Jean Wilson and Myrtle Nesbitt; and treasurers, Jean Anderson and Connie Prout. Future Teachers The Eugene B. Chaffee Chapter of Future Teachers of America was organized in 1940 for the purpose of bringing about a more professional attitude among cadet teachers. The club received national recognition for increasing its enrollment ten per cent over that of the previous year. Officers were: president, Mary Margaret McGrath; vice-president, Joan Arriola; secretary and treasurer, Margaret Roush; advisor, O. D. Cole. 48

11 Photography New to Boise Junior College is the Photography Club, organized this year for the purpose of bringing together camera fans of the school in order that they might exchange ideas and further develop their skill in this art. Their main project for the year was the sponsoring of a snapshot contest to get pictures for the Les Bois. Officers were: president, Lee Miller; vice-president, Robert Gruber; secretarytreasurer, Betty Wallace; advisor, Dr. R. M. Myers. P T. Flyers... As well as earning Junior College credit, these students are learning to fly under the program set up by the Civil Aeronautics Administration and sponsored by Boise Junior College in connection with Webb's Flying Service. At the end of the primary flying course, a private pilot's license is issued to the students. Some of them are now taking their secondary course, and will be finished with this at the end of the school year.
