Bucknell University Director of Athletics 2 About the Patriot League The Patriot League s member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. The conference enjoys a long tradition of success in meeting high standards of athletic performance and in helping every student realize his or her full capabilities. League members have also distinguished themselves on the field of play. The Patriot League sponsors championship competition in 24 sports (11 for men, 13 for women). Championship teams from 16 sports are guaranteed advancement into NCAA post-season competition: baseball, men and women's basketball, field hockey, football, men and women's golf, men and women's lacrosse, rowing, men and women's soccer, softball, men and women's tennis and volleyball. Patriot League schools have won numerous NCAA Tournament games in the sports of men's basketball, football, women's volleyball, men and women's lacrosse, softball, men's soccer and field hockey during the past decade. The Patriot League is a unique collection of highly selective colleges and universities linked by a number of common values. Their institutions do not exceed 6,000 students in size and focus on providing the highest quality education to their undergraduate students. The league admits and graduates scholar-athletes who succeed in the classroom as well as on the field. The Patriot League's full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. Patriot League teams compete at the highest levels of NCAA competition and numerous Patriot League scholar-athletes are recognized annually as All-Americans and Academic All-Americans. The Patriot League began as a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formerly Division I- AA football) conference in 1986 and became an all-sport conference in Full League members include American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy. Associate members include Fordham and Georgetown in the sport of football. These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities significantly contribute to their communities and society in general and have played a leadership role in shaping our country.

Bucknell University Director of Athletics 3 Bucknell University An Overview Bucknell University is a selective, highly ranked national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other. The University s academic programs span the arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences, engineering and management. The University has substantial financial resources, a talented faculty of teacher-scholars, and a widely held commitment among the University s many constituents to be the best it can be. Bucknell offers its students the resources and programs of the caliber often found at private research universities but in a more intimate residential learning environment that offers the personal attention typical of a smaller liberal arts college. This unique combination has the University community poised to elevate Bucknell to an even more distinctive position within the higher education landscape, and to ensure that it continues to offer the most relevant, effective education grounded in the liberal arts philosophy and centered on the intersections of its broad offerings. Founded in 1846 as an institution devoted to a literary curriculum that prepared Baptist missionaries for leadership and service, the University quickly evolved to become a nonsectarian institution grounded in the classics and it expanded in the early 20th century to include engineering. After World War II, it grew greatly in enrollment, faculty, staff, campus size and curriculum. Today, more than 3,600 undergraduates and about 100 graduate students are enrolled at Bucknell. Undergraduates choose from more than 50 majors and 65 minors in the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Engineering and the College of Management. Approximately 65 percent of students major in the arts and sciences, 20 percent of students study engineering and 15 percent major in management, though all of the programs including engineering and management offer broad-based learning in the liberal arts curriculum. With almost 400 full-time faculty, of which the great majority is tenure-line, Bucknell maintains a student-faculty ratio currently below 10:1. Faculty members, not graduate students, teach the courses, creating a personalized environment where professors get to know their students and mentor them through research, creative projects, performances, conference presentations, field trips and more. Bucknell s beautiful 450-acre campus includes first-rate facilities such as Academic West, the University s newest academic building, which opened in 2013 and added 70,000 square feet of classrooms, labs, faculty offices and hearth spaces to the campus. The University is currently developing plans to

Bucknell University Director of Athletics 4 construct several new facilities, including a Humanities Center (to open this spring); Academic East; which will house engineering and education; and a new building for the College of Management. The majority of students live on campus. In summer 2015, the University opened its South Campus Apartment Complex, creating 344 new on-campus beds thereby reducing off campus housing to a total of about 200 seniors. Through extensive residential life and learning programs, students develop leadership skills, cultural competencies and career and life skills that prepare them to become globally minded citizens of the 21st century. Student life is vibrant, with more than 150 student-run organizations; 27 NCAA Division I athletic teams; a robust arts culture; and a commitment among many of the students to community and global service work. In 2014, the University achieved its decennial reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, receiving high praise from the visiting team for the quality of its self-study, which focused on the integration of academic and residential life, a core component of the University s mission. Bucknell University offers individuals a challenging and rewarding educational experience. With access to the resources of a large university, yet in an intimate, highly personalized residential-learning environment, students graduate from Bucknell equipped for a lifetime of personal and professional success, as demonstrated by outcomes in the following areas, among others: Career Paths; Postgraduate Placement; Preparedness for Success, Student Learning, Retention and Graduation and Academic Engagement. Bucknell also provides numerous diversity resources across the campus community as summarized below and through which we will be able to help advance our diversity, equity and inclusion goals. Additional information about Bucknell is available at bucknell.edu. Diversity Statement Bucknell University s diversity efforts broaden and deepen our personal and intellectual horizons, preparing all of us students, staff and faculty to make thoughtful, responsible contributions as individuals, community members and professionals in a diverse, globally integrated world. An essential component of Bucknell s commitment to academic excellence is our commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse campus community. Bucknell s understanding of diversity is broad based, emphasizing the identity and experiences of groups that have been historically under-represented in higher education, and encompassing age, class, culture, (dis)ability, ethnicity, gender

Bucknell University Director of Athletics 5 identity, gender expression, immigration status, national origin, race, religion and spirituality, sex and sexual identity, among others. We affirm that diverse experiences and perspectives in the classroom and across campus enhance everyone s educational experience. Together, we are building and nurturing a community that embraces, respects and celebrates diversity in all its forms. Inside the classroom and beyond we strive to foster an environment in which our students engage with, understand, and appreciate perspectives, people, and cultures that may be very different than their own. These experiences position students to broaden their perspectives, enrich their knowledge of self and others, examine their values, and develop skills in critical thinking and collaboration-all of which prepare students to make valuable contributions in a diverse, globally integrated world. These experiences position students to broaden their perspectives, enrich their knowledge of self and others, examine their values, and develop skills in critical thinking and collaboration-all of which prepare students to make valuable contributions in a diverse, globally integrated world. No perpetual college students here. Division I Athletics Graduation rate for athletes 92% in the latest four-year average is annually among the highest in the nation. 27 varsity sports (13 men's, 14 women's) Winner of the Patriot League Presidents' Cup, the league's all-sports trophy, 18 of the last 25 years. Bucknell Athletics Bucknell Athletics Mission Statement: The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell s high national ranking for student-athletes graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches and staff s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department s programs add substantially to Bucknell s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

Bucknell University Director of Athletics 7 A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today s exemplary Bison scholar-athletes will be tomorrow s outstanding leaders. Athletics Standards Specific to the Patriot League Patriot League institutions only admit athletes who we believe will succeed academically and graduate from our institutions. An academic index is calculated for all student-athletes to ensure that all academic credentials are reflective of their institution s general student body. All admissions decisions in the Patriot League are made by admissions professionals, not by athletic department personnel. Patriot League institutions strive to maintain the same academic standards and values for all students, including athletes and for all programs, including athletics. Academics play a primary role in the lives of Patriot League athletes, who receive no special academic privileges or consideration. There is an expectation that Patriot League athletes will proceed to an academic degree in four years. Athletic redshirting (i.e., holding a student out of competition for the purpose of saving a year of NCAA eligibility for a fifth year of enrollment) is specifically forbidden in the Patriot League. The primary focus of Patriot League athletic programs is on the personal development and academic success of individual scholar-athletes. Athletes graduate from their institutions well-equipped to become leaders in their personal and professional endeavors. In the Patriot League governance structure, each member institution is accountable to the others for admission decisions and academic policies involving athletes and participates in annual reviews. Control of athletic budgets and priorities is held by the president of each Patriot League institution. Bucknell Athletics Facilities Whether it is the varsity student-athlete, the intramurals participant or the fitness buff looking for a nice workout, members of the Bucknell community benefit from a wide array of first-class athletics facilities. The completion of the Kenneth Langone Athletics & Recreation Center in 2003 highlighted a facilities boon at Bucknell. Sojka Pavilion, Kinney Natatorium and the Krebs Family Fitness Center are the centerpieces of the sparkling new indoor facility, nicely complementing the renovated Davis Gym and Gerhard Fieldhouse, all of which lie under the same roof. In 2016, the new Graham Building opened, featuring a fully dedicated, state-of-the art practice and training facility for the Bison wrestling team.

Bucknell University Director of Athletics 8 Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium is the largest of the outdoor facilities, with 13,100 seats surrounding the FieldTurf playing surface and 8-lane track. Holmes Stadium, completed in 2007, is an impressive covered grandstand featuring all chair-back seating, along with the accompanying support facilities (locker rooms, athletic training room, press box, concession/merchandise stand, etc.) that service both Emmitt Field (natural grass for soccer) and Graham Field (AstroTurf for field hockey and women s lacrosse). The next phase of the West Fields improvement project includes significant upgrades for baseball and softball. Both diamonds recently received new playing surfaces. FieldTurf at Depew Field (baseball) was laid in time for the start of the 2010 season, while new sod was recently installed in the outfield of Becker Field (softball). Both facilities also now have new dugouts, fencing and scoreboards, as well a brick entry plaza, and coming in 2018 are new grandstands and press boxes for both venues. Also located on the western end of campus are numerous grass fields for intramurals and recreation, as well as Bucknell s own highly regarded 18-hole golf course, the Bucknell Golf Club. The BGC property, the new Bachman Golf Center provides a year-round training center for the Bison golf teams. The Bison rowing team has its own Boathouse located about 10 miles south of campus, along the scenic Susquehanna River. That is the only athletics facility that is not located within a short walk from the center of campus, but the rowing team now has its own brand new erg room next to Davis Gym. The quality and location of these venues makes Bucknell one of the most sports-friendly campuses in the nation.
