In these tough economic times AJA is offering a relatively low-cost opportunity to experience high-quality judicial education focusing on the High Performance Judge. The conference includes a number of outstanding social events, beginning with a stellar welcome reception on Sunday evening, the outstanding Annual American Judges Foundation Fundraiser (at an additional tax-deductible cost), and the fabulous president s reception and banquet at the Westin Gaslamp on Thursday. Our Collaborators... In developing the education components of this conference the AJA Education Committee has collaborated with the Judicial Council of California Administrative Office of the Courts, specifically Judges Tricia Bigelow, Peggy Hora, Eileen Moore, and Eddie Sturgeon, and Karene Alvarado, Managing Attorney, Education Division/CJER. AJA thanks them for their assistance in putting together this year s varied and outstanding educational programs. Our Education Programs... Our education programs will all qualify for Continuing Judicial Education Credits and will be presented by faculty experts in their fields who have demonstrated an ability to engage their audience. This year our programming will include a number of sessions to help you be the best judge possible. There will be several outstanding plenary sessions, including Professors Dennis Curtis and Judith Resnik of Yale Law School on Representing Justice; Dean Erwin Chemerinsky with an update on recent decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court; and a fascinating session on Courts and the Media: The High-Visibility Case, Using People v. Kobe Bryant as a Case Study. Douglas Marlowe from the National Association of Drug Court Professionals will present An Introduction to Evidence-Based Sentencing, which will be followed by several breakout sessions on that topic. Other concurrent sessions will look at Judicial Ethics in the Internet Age, Pro Se Litigation, New Developments in the Science of Judicial Behavior, and Women Convicted of Domestic Violence. Registration The conference registration fee is $450; however, those AJA members who postmark their registrations (accompanied by payment) no later than July 1, 2011 will pay only $400. The fee for guests and spouses is $200, with an early bird special of $175 for registrations postmarked by July 1. Nonmember judges may attend for a fee of $600; their guests/spouses will pay $250. The judge registration fee includes the welcome reception, one lunch, coffee breaks, the president s reception and dinner, and all conference materials. The spouse registration fee includes the welcome reception, one lunch, and the final reception and dinner. Cancellations must be submitted in writing; all cancellations will incur a $50 processing fee ($25 for guest/ spouse fees). Online registration is available on the AJA website ( under Conferences.

3 Vendors and Contributors A wide variety of companies will be invited to display their products or services in a general vendor area that will be open during the major days of the conference. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the latest technology and ideas available to assist judges and their courts. Some of the funding for this education conference is made possible by the generous contribution of the Dr. Scholl Foundation. Hotel Accommodations The Westin Gaslamp Quarter is located in downtown San Diego, and features 450 newly updated guest rooms, a restaurant, a lounge, and fitness center. You can find out much more about the hotel at A special rate of $199 single or double plus taxes has been arranged for AJA. Please be sure to make your reservations as soon as possible it s easier to cancel a reservation than it is to get a room when nothing is available. The Westin Gaslamp Quarter is located just four miles from San Diego International Airport and is easily accessible by taxi, limousine, rental car, or commercial shuttle service. Getting around the city is very convenient as well. The Red Trolley is a public transit system, which offers transportation from the Mexican border through downtown and Mission Valley to parts of the East County. The Old Town Trolley offers a stop just outside of the hotel and offers tours throughout San Diego s Old Town and Coronado Island. See the concierge for details about times and pricing. The president s reception and banquet is black-tie optional. Weather AJA will be in San Diego at a great time of year. Temperatures should be in the in the 70s, and San Diego is known for its gorgeous weather. Activities/Attractions The Gaslamp Quarter is home to more than 150 restaurants, coffeehouses, and nightclubs and nearly a hundred unique shops and galleries. So whether you opt for traditional food with flair or shopping for something a bit off the beaten path, your visit to the Gaslamp Quarter will be a unique experience. 5 The American Judges Association has selected San Diego, California for its 2011 Annual Educational Conference. This year the host hotel will be the Westin Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. The AJA membership will collaborate with the California Judiciary for a seminar that proves to be unique compared to the types of conferences that have been held before. We will be working along with California judges in developing interesting and meaningful topics that will present the hot-button issues of our day, such as using evidence-based practices, developing issues in ethics, and settling the civil case, as well as our usual and famous Supreme Court year in review presented by Dean Erwin Chemerinsky. The city of San Diego sits on beautiful San Diego Bay and is one of America s vibrant young cities.
