1 Beta Crescent Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity Summer Ohio State Greetings Brothers, My name is Jared Thomas and I am the Noble Ruler for Beta Chapter during Next Fall Semester, I will be a fourth year student from Plain City, Ohio studying Sustainable Plant Systems. Being Noble Ruler so far has been very exciting and rewarding. The chapter has continued to enjoy the new renovations made to the House. It has been a great selling point for some new members joining Beta Chapter. We have been busy bringing new members into our chapter this past semester. During the past two initiations, we have brought in 17 new members. That put Beta Chapter at 51 members before this past spring semester graduation. Nine seniors graduated at the end of the spring semester. Outside of initiations, the chapter has been busy with philanthropy. The AGR Holiday Classic Steer Show was successful bringing in two professional judges, Ryan Rathmann and Kevin Jenson. Our show hosted over 500 entries during the two-day event. After all the hard work and dedication, Beta chapter was able to donate $10,000 to Ohio State s annual student run Buckeyethon, which donated a record $1,510, to Nationwide Children s Hospital. We are about to start looking for new sponsorships for the December 2017 show. Contact myself Thomas.3102@osu.edu or Noble Ruler Report Drew Baus Baus.13@osu.edu if you would like to donate to a great cause. We are planning on having a busy first start for fall semester. The chapter is going to start the semester off with a two week rush program to attract potential new members. These events will consist of, but not limited to, patio bonfires, poker nights, and movies on the patio side of the house. If you know anybody attending Ohio State or seniors in high school interested in AGR, we would love to get in contact with them. Contact myself Thomas.3102@osu.edu or our recruitment chairman Justin Gibbs at Gibbs.297@ osu.edu. We also will be working on tailgate style events, but these are still in the works. This last semester has been a blast serving as the Noble Ruler of the Beta Chapter. Our goal is to continue building the membership level backup to 50+ members while making better men. I am truly honored to serve and will continue to lead our chapter in the right direction to reach the goal of filling the house! Fraternally, Jared Thomas 1649 What s inside Founder s Day 2017 Executive Team Backyard BBQ And More...
2 Founder s Day Our 2017 Founder s Day, held February 25th at the Ohio State Fawcett Center celebrated the 100th year of Alpha Gamma Rho, Beta Chapter owning our beautiful house at 1979 Iuka Ave. Brothers and families traveled from across Ohio and other states to spend time with the undergraduates, alumni and guests of Beta Chapter. A brief record of the AGR House s history was presented to the active chapter marking the 100th anniversary of AGR moving into the House in September The framed document is now mounted above the foyer fireplace. Receiving testimonials as 50 year members were 31 alumni initiated in 1967 with PIN# 871 to 901. They are: Douglas Bushong, Wayne Kurzen, Steven Inglish, Glen Stewart, Alan Garten, Dale Nagel (deceased), Clifford Orley, Jeffery Anderson, Hugh Hayman, Richard Wensink, Bruce Ackerman, Jimmie Brandt, Kenneth Haack, Donald Barr, Thomas Wentz, Howard Wolff, James Bach, James Hunter, John King, Keith Bohley, Roger Dush, Ronald Schaefer, Donald Rings, Gary Flinn, Dennis Smith, Richard Teague, Keith Putman, Thomas Archer, John Hilt, Kenneth Fryman and Kirby Barrick. Their names are on the plaque mounted above the fireplace mantle in the chapter room. It is fitting and proper that we remember these brothers who gave their all in service of our country to protect our freedoms. Brother Raymond Hiram Baldwin, USMC (PIN# 157) set foot in France on May 8, He was killed in action Nov. 2, 1918 at age 21 in the Argonne Forest two kilometers northeast of Sommerance, France as a machine gunner for D Company, 5th Regiment, 2nd Division. The 5th Regiment was nicknamed the Devil Dogs for their tenacity during the Battle of Belleau Wood and were the most decorated regiment in the US Marine Corp. Brother Baldwin was from Cleveland, Ohio. Brother Russell Headley Armold, US Navy (PIN# 192) contracted the deadly bird influenza and died Oct. 24, 1918 at age 21 in Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. 4 House Director Report The close of Spring Semester marked the end of my second academic year as House Director. Recently, I was asked what I would say about this experience. The first word that came to my mind was balance. Living around year-olds in a fraternity environment presents many unique experiences and challenges. I find the need to balance issues of immediate importance requiring immediate attention, with issues of lesser importance (or no importance at all). I use a 24 hour rule with the young men when it comes to furthering issues not requiring immediate attention. My 24 hour rule is quite simple. After 24 hours, if the issue still needs to be addressed, we talk about it. If after 24 hours, the issue is not important anymore (or took care of itself), no need to further it. My primary focus for the chapter has not changed during these two years; grow our brotherhood and membership to Make Better Men. Two years ago, we had 27 actives move into the newly renovated House for Fall Semester This coming Fall Semester 2017, there are 35 young men moving into the House, with another 12 actives living outside the House. While we all would like to have a full house of 55 undergraduates move into the House every Fall Semester, we are moving in the right direction. The first two weeks of this coming Fall Semester 2017 will see two weeks of planned, daily recruiting events and activities. This scheduled recruiting plan is similar to the comprehensive recruiting of other larger fraternities at Ohio State. ARG s recruiting has two important elements and goals for underclassmen: 1) meeting current actives, and 2) visiting the House. The various events and activities accomplish these two important goals. I m glad to report that our beautifully renovated and refurbished 1905 mansion (and additions) is in good repair and shows only the expected wear and tear from two years of living after the renovation. Keeping the House clean and in good repair is a constant theme that the young men know I expect and will not compromise, particularly property damages. That brings me to the $7,000 landscaping damages AGR experienced during Spring Semester by two members of another fraternity. Columbus Police, Greek Affairs and Ohio State Student Conduct were involved with the situation. Legal issues were closed with full payment for the damages by the two undergraduates who caused the destruction. AGR actives did not retaliate as Ohio State Student Conduct and Greek Affairs officials made it clear that any retaliation would result in greater individual and possible House sanctions than those who caused the damages. Our premise was, We don t retaliate against a second tier fraternity. The damages moved up our scheduled installation of security cameras in and around the House. The AGR House has nine internet/smart phone based surveillance cameras digitally videoing people entering and leaving the front and back doors, basement dining room door, traffic in the side lot, back lot, Woodruff Avenue lot, and patio/fire pit. Most Greek Houses have or are installing similar security surveillance. AGR has changed all of the private student rooms from keyed locks to 4-code locks. This takes care of three issues: 1) room keys no longer can be lost or damaged, 2) the student can t be locked out of the room, and 3) the door always locks when closed. In addition, the door lock easily can be recoded if/when needed. Because of the losses of front and back door key FOBS, a 5-code lock on the outside basement door leading into the dining room/kitchen was installed. This lock also allows delivery people a one-time use code for entry and delivery. Besides the intended keyless access for outof-house actives, it allows temporary access for guests. (IF YOU HAVE A DOOR FOB, PLEASE RETURN IT.) Other Greek Houses which use a coded locking system for outside doors say they change the code weekly during the football season and bi-monthly during the rest of the year. The two combined coded locks will allow in-house actives to walk to and from classes (and other activities) without needing keys to get into the House and room. Finally, this summer the AGR House again has 28 Greek men and women renting in our 2nd summer living program; including three women and one man returning from last year. Six fraternities and five sororities are represented, as well as men from Miami University and University of Cincinnati. Along with our summer guests rent is an assigned parking space. A map of unassigned guest parking spaces is taped to the back door should you visit the House. Fraternally, Terry R. Krukemyer, Beta 1141
5 Wall of Composites Complete ( Present) AGR Beta Chapter thanks alumni who donated or supplied a copy of their 14 x 11 fraternity composite during their college years. The first floor back hallway and informal living room now contain either the AGR composite or Makio yearbook photo from 1948 to present. Next year s Wall of Composites project is to collect or copy AGR Beta composites from 1904 to The back hallway already contains 12 composites prior to 1948, the oldest from Most of the copies likely will be taken from old Ohio State Makios. Special thanks to Brothers Bill Thornton and Bryan Herd for spearheading the Wall of Composites as part of the House renovation project. The composites have become a House focal point as alumni gravitate to their undergraduate years in Beta Chapter. Upcoming Events Saturday July 22, 2017, Noon - 4:00 PM Summer Cookout and Pond Fun, Noon-4 PM, home of Nate Morlock, 9311 Napoleon Rd., Bowling Green, OH (If you know a current or future Ohio State student who would be a great addition to the AGR brotherhood, contact any of the cell numbers or s in this Crescent.)
