4 La Salle University Director of Purchasing Philadelphia, PA * 215/ Fax 215/ A Reminder I t s Happening Again To: Re: From: La Salle University Campus Community DON T GET CAUGHT BY THE TONER-PHONERS!! Nancylee Moore Recently, there have been several phone calls to La Salle Departments by pirate companies selling Copier Toner Please be aware o f what can happen: They ask to speak to the person who orders copier supplies. They confirm the make & model of the machine. They imply they re the national distributor for your local supplier, offering discounted price. If 1 case of toner is ordered, the quantity is doubled by the shipper. One month later, the caller notifies the next shipment is about to be released. The pattern continues. The resulting Invoice bills at 10 times the actual cost. Please know that the University s authorized copier maintenance contract includes the cost for copier toner supplies at a discounted rate. Check the ID label on your copier for the phone number of your Service Maintenance Company, and call only that number when toner is needed. If you are not sure of your copier maintenance company, please feel free to call Purchasing at Note: You may also get calls for Laser and Deskjet Printer Toner. La Salle s printer toner contract prices are through Office Basics for Hewlett Packard, Epson, Lexmark OEM toners, and for Data Products Remanufactured Toner (as approved by IT). Just give Customer Service your Make/Model and they will identify the toner PN.

12 La Salle University Philadelphia, Pennsylvania M ulticultural and International Affairs To: From: Faculty, Staff, Students Richard Fumey, Student Assistant Multicultural & International Affairs Date: December 1, 1998 Subject: The Tandem Program I am writing to invite you to participate in this new program at La Salle. The idea of the Tandem Program is to bring two partners with different native languages together to improve their second language. Two individuals who want to learn each other s native language will meet on a regular basis, at least once a week. Each partner will alternate as teacher and student, with the first meeting dedicated to one language and the second meeting to the other language. The goal will be to work on oral skills in the language. The Tandem Program is meant not only to improve language skills outside the boundaries of the classroom. It is also an excellent opportunity for students of a foreign language to practice and improve their language skills with native speakers. In addition, it is designed to bridge the gap between native and foreign students by exposing one another to the cultural differences that exist even on this campus. It is an excellent way to visit another country without actually being there! The program is also available to those who would just like to share their native language with another. For example, native speakers of English simply interested in helping non-native speakers are encouraged to participate. The same is true for native speakers o f other languages. The Tandem Program is open to all La Salle students, faculty, and staff. All one needs to participate in the program is the interest and some time to learn or experience a different language. If you are interested in participating, please let me know, as I will be coordinating the program. My is fumeyrl@lasalle.edu and our phone number is Other questions may be directed to Elaine Mshomba, Director of International Education, at emshomba@lasalie.edu or Thank you

22 The scope of the tragedy challenges the imagination... 5,000 people dead, 7,000 missing and presumed dead, hundreds of thousands of acres of land flooded, crops destroyed, herds of cattle swept away, 800,000 people homeless! The Christian Brothers ministering in Nicaragua have asked for our help... Please be generous and send what you can to the CAMPUS MINISTRY CENTER (Box 841). Because of the unreliability of government agencies in Nicaragua, all money collected will be sent directly to the Permission to Post Campus Ministry Center T hank you for y o u r generosity!

23 We Can Do More! "In youth we learn, in age we understand." -Marie von Eloner-Eschenbach Chris Klagholz RSA Executive Vice President As the semester comes to a close I want to extend a sincere thanks to all the Area Government s, SGA, the resident students and the La Salle Administration for making this semester seem as though the campus was alive with activity. I specifically commend the work that Trey Ulrich and Fionnuala Gallagher, (SGA President and Executive Vice President of Student Affairs respectively) have done with the fraternities and sororities and all those involved who helped Trey run the forum on violence. The participation in events like this and the administration s willingness to take part, listen and act accordingly are the beginnings of good things to come for resident life here at La Salle, as well as a chance to try new things that will involve not only the residents but commuter students as well. In keeping with this theme of bringing us all together in order to better understand each other and help overcome the obstacles of our differences my hope is that all will take part in a campus wide awareness week that myself and Fionnuala Gallagher hope to coordinate as well as partake in. This is my first call to arms before you leave to enjoy your breaks... Continue Klagholz Page 2 The BDG RSA, with the help o f Devin Hudgens, held a Candlelight Vigil on Monday, November 23rd at 5:30pm. Although the candles would not stay lit the spirit o f the event shined. Thank you to all who attended. It definitely was a great start to ending violence on our campus. Check out the RSA newly renovated homepage! Our website features information on the Executive Board, Area Governments, campus events, and more. w w w.lasalle.edu/rsa.htm It is time for RSA s programming to step to another level!

24 RSA Newsletter LaSalle University St. Cassian 14 (215) Klagholz Cont. to begin to realize that the difficulties that arise from our uniqueness, which makes us all special does not go away when we leave the campus for the holiday. My hope is that all will come and participate when the dates are set. Our hope is that we may all admit that differences are good, and that maybe we all can say we may not necessarily agree with each other, but at the very least we respect each other. I hope that the steps already taken by SGA, with their violence forum, and the candle light vigil along with the planned awareness week will be the stepping stones to new understandings but more importantly to new friends. Resident Student Association Editor s Voice My goal as Publicity Coordinator is to start publishing this newsletter frequently in effort to notify the La Salle Community about the important issues on our campus. It is important to me that the other voices in our community be heard therefore if anyone wants to write an article, voice their opinion or address an issue, please contact me!
