1 Sophia Snow Place Centre Street * West Roxbury, MA * (617) October 2013 Sophia Snow Place has its roots in the charitable spirit of the nineteenth-century Boston. In 1856, a group of civic-minded citizens raised money to operate and maintain the Roxbury Home for Aged Women. In 1962, after a century of care, the home was relocated and renamed Sophia Snow House, in honor of Sophia Snow. Today, the parent company, the Roxbury Home for Aged Women, has affiliated organizations: Snow House & Snow Place. These nonprofit organizations continue their mission to provide comfort, companionship and security in a warm, homelike environment for seniors. Visits with the Students from the Park School in Brookline Last year, we had the pleasure of having the second graders from the Park School come visit us once a month sharing lessons, poetry, songs, art, and more. Both the residents here at Sophia Snow Place and the students truly enjoyed spending time together. Now, with the new school year upon us, the word has spread and more students would like to come here to Sophia Snow! Starting this month, students of various grades from the Park School will be visiting us four times per month, each time bringing prepared activities they would like to share with the residents. Please come to the Great Room and meet these young and bright students! When: Thursday, October 3. 3 Trip to the Concord Museum & Out to Lunch at the Colonial Inn The Concord Museum in historic Concord, Massachusetts houses one of the oldest and most treasured collections of Americana in the country. Come visit the gateway to Concord s remarkable revolutionary and literary history. The Concord Museum is the one place where all of Concord s remarkable past is brought to life through an inspiring collection of historical, literary, and decorative arts treasures. Museum admission: $8.00 After we visit the museum we will go nearby to the Colonial Inn, where we will have lunch at the restaurant inside the Inn, Merchant s Row. 4 IT S MY STORY AND I M STICKING WITH IT! A one-hour gathering is for playing socially and getting replenished spiritually, just by listening to good, honest stories from our lives, together... We gather weekly to engage elders with meaning and purpose. A parlor ritual unfolds and an elder resident, or a special guest, is interviewed in the Queen Anne chair, encircled by others. I draw a personal question of intrigue from what the elder or guest had shared in the interview. This question is then offered to others in the circle. As people respond, stories emerge. Deeper connections are inevitably discovered and laughter springs forth and insights are caught, leading the way into tender, direct, follow-up questions. Listening is a powerful gift to all gathered. We close with a parlor card game called Heart to Heart. 5 October 2013 Art Matters: Music & Dance Patriots Game Potluck The human brain is an amazing thing. We use visual images to communicate with one another as a species. We look at images with our eyes, but pictures can connect us to our other senses as well; sound, touch, even taste & smell. We hear the music, feel the movement and can remember events in our lives with all of our senses, just by looking. Join us for some sensory recall, as we look at images that let us listen, dance and connect to the world and our own lives. Wednesday, October 9 th 2:00 p.m. in the Great Room In the spirit of the fall football season, we will be having a Patriots game Potluck. For those of you who are football fans and enjoy watching the game with other fans come on down to the Great Room. Each person should bring a snack to share for example, chips, dip, cookies, crackers, soda, etc. Please sign up in the activity book with what you will be bringing, so no one else will bring the same thing! Sunday, October 20 th 1:00 Patriots Game in the Great Resident Newspaper Interest Meeting Here at Sophia Snow Place, we have quite a number of talented people - writers, artists, poets, photographers, and more. The idea has come up to combine all of these and use this wide variety of talents to create a resident newspaper. The idea is still new so there will be an interest meeting led by Shauna, the Activities Director, to see how many residents would like to be involved and what they would like to contribute. Anything is possible: writing articles, taking pictures, writing stories, and poems, etc. All are welcome to attend and offer ideas. Please join us! Please remember to sign up for a time! MooreMart is a nonprofit organization started by the son-in-law of one of our residents here at Sophia Snow Place, Mr. Robert Murray. MooreMart began as a family effort to provide needed but unavailable supplies to their brother and his fellow soldiers serving in Iraq. Four years later they continue to supply soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan with anything they need that will make their job a little easier. Today they have expanded their mission to include the local children in both Iraq and Afghanistan. They send new school supplies, toys and outerwear to villages that never had a school or where the schools have been destroyed. Now, thanks to our servicemen and women and the Coalition Forces the local children enjoy the long awaited privilege of participating in the educational process. With the holidays coming up, MooreMart needs help writing letters and cards to these soldiers overseas. Please join us as we work together and help write cards to those serving our country! Magic Show With Jack Ryan Join us for an evening of fun, magic, and laughter as magician Jack Ryan puts on a spectacular magic show for us! Wednesday, October 16 th 6:30 p.m. in the Great Room Nashoba Valley Winery was born in 1978 when founder Jack Partridge s interest in fruit wines exceeded his fascination with city planning. Today, Nashoba Valley Winery is Massachusetts s leading fruit wine producer and the nation s pioneering winery orchard. Under the ownership of Rich and Cindy Pelletier, the Winery has introduced grape wines, micro-brewed beers, Port style wines, ice wines, fortified wines, fruit distillates and a Sparkling Apple Wine. It seemed only natural to open a restaurant at Nashoba Valley Winery to showcase the many varieties of wines as well as the fruits, herbs, vegetables and edible flowers that are grown in the orchard. J s restaurant offers seasonal menus artfully prepared and carefully served in a charming locale. 8 Celebrating 101 Years: Rosalie Murphy Watercolor of York Beach in Maine by Rosalie Upcoming on October 28th, one of our very special residents will be celebrating her 101 st year of her truly wonderful life. Rosalie Murphy was born in 1912 and was raised in Dorchester, MA as an only child until she moved to West Roxbury as a teenager. After graduating from Dorchester High School, she went on to attend the Massachusetts College of Art where she received her Bachelor s Degree in Being a very talented artist, Rosalie taught art for five years at the Shaw School in West Roxbury. When she wasn t teaching, she attended classes on Saturdays and during the evenings to receive her Master s Degree in Education. After five years of teaching, Rosalie was appointed Supervisor of the Art Departments for Boston Public Schools, and remained Supervisor up until her retirement. Rosalie has always led a very active life; she has a passion for art as well as a passion to travel. Throughout her life she has travelled with friends to Nova Scotia, and all over Europe. And, as many know, her skills as a painter are beautifully reflected in her watercolor paintings displayed around room. Rosalie has also used her talents to make calendars as a volunteer to give the patients at the Faulkner Hospital. The Faulkner continues to use her artwork for calendars they give out today. We are lucky to have such a remarkable woman as a part of our community here at Sophia Snow Place, and her 101 years are certainly something to be proud of. Interviewees include the families of Wall Street insider Jesse Livermore, stock specialist Michael Meehan and General Motors founder William Durant, as well as Groucho Marx's son, Arthur. Saunders School of Hotel & Restaurant Management at Newbury College features an on-campus, open-to-the-public restaurant, run by students working under our chef instructors to prepare and serve meals. While patrons enjoy a unique fine dining experience in the beautifully appointed Lois and David Weltman Dining Room, students have the opportunity to apply their culinary and hospitality training, and gain relevant experience in an active restaurant environment. It is an extraordinary opportunity for culinary students to spend time at each of the various kitchen stations, and for hospitality students to acquire experience in both front- and back-of-the-house functions.
