March 31, 2017 SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS! For the second time in four years, our Senior Boys Basketball team was crowned BC 4A Boys Provincial Champions on Saturday March 11! In a thrilling Championship Game, our Gators beat the Kelowna Owls for the 5 th time this year, enacting revenge for last year s loss in the provincial semi finals. The game was very close from the start and the teams were tied halfway through the final quarter, before our boys pulled away for a win. The victory capped off a fantastic week and incredible season for the team. The Gators cruised to an easy win over Mt. Baker from Cranbrook on the opening day of the Provincials before dismantling Kitsilano in the quarter finals. In the semi finals, the Gators took on the Holy Cross Crusaders, a team the Gators had just recently defeated to capture the Fraser Valley Championship. After a close first quarter, the Gators broke the game open to pull away for a convincing victory that advanced them to the Championship game. On the season, the Gators were dominant, only losing one game all year to BC Competition and capturing six of seven tournaments that they entered. As mentioned above, they were also crowned Fraser Valley Champions! Individual recognition goes to Grade 11 James Woods, named MVP of the BC Tournament. Graduating seniors Ty Rowell (1st team) and Andrew Goertzen (2nd team) were both named to the Provincial All Star Team and our school also won the School Spirit Award for the tourney! A huge shout out and congratulations to Coach George Bergen for winning his second provincial basketball championship and for the countless hours of time he has committed to his players and the Gator basketball program over the past 25 years! Well done, George! Check out the link below from the Langley Times for a great video overview of the game and championship celebration:

M a r c h 3 1, P a g e 2 TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION ASSEMBLIES The Truth and Reconciliation Assemblies held on Tuesday March 7 were a wonderful culmination and celebration of the work that the staff and students of WGSS have undertaken over the past year to learn, understand and celebrate our Aboriginal history, culture and communities. Over the past year, our students have been learning a great deal about our Aboriginal history, especially around the impact of Residential Schools on our First Nations people. This has occurred through classroom instruction, our Orange Shirt Day assemblies back in September, and the recent classroom presentations involving the Project of Heart Canoe display in our library. At Tuesday's assemblies, Mike Morgan, District Principal of Aboriginal Learning, delivered an inspiring, interactive presentation to our students regarding Truth and Reconciliation and the importance of the work that still needs to be done in this area. As well, we were very fortunate to have Michael and Kevin Kelly Gabriel from the Kwantlen First Nation speak to our students about their own family's experience with Residential Schools. The students were also treated to traditional Aboriginal drumming from many of our district Aboriginal workers. Finally, the ceremony culminated with the unveiling of the WGSS Longhouse Project, a collaborative venture involving five of our staff members. Over the past year, Ms. Norman, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Halabourda, Ms. Shogren, and Una Moyer, our Aboriginal Support Worker, have used the district's Collaboration time to plan, design, develop and build this longhouse, which symbolizes Walnut Grove's commitment to carrying on with the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Just on Thursday, the longhouse was mounted permanently in our school courtyard along with the district Truth and Reconciliation plaque, as a daily reminder of the need to continue the work that has been started over the past year. Una and a few of our Aboriginal students unveiled the plaque and spoke to the meaning of the artwork and symbols represented on the longhouse. Many thanks to everyone involved in making this project and our Truth and Reconciliation Assemblies a success!

M a r c h 3 1, P a g e 3 GIRLS BASKETBALL AT WGSS ROCKS! Congratulations to our Senior Girls and Grade 8 Girls Basketball teams who concluded an outstanding year with a strong placing at the Provincial Championships just prior to Spring break! Our Seniors lost a tough quarterfinal game to Panorama Ridge but bounced back to finish 7 th in BC, defeating Argyle in double overtime. Tavia Rowell was named an honorable mention provincial all-star. The future is bright for this team as every player will be back next year! As for our grade 8 girls, the also lost a tough quarterfinal game to Lord Tweedsmuir, but bounced back to win their last two games and finished 5 th overall in BC, the second highest finish for a grade 8 girls team in school history! Sophia Wisotzki was named a third team provincial all-star. Congrats to both teams and looking forward to more great results from our girls program over the next few years!

M a r c h 3 1, P a g e 4 SPRING CHORAL POPS CONCERT On Tuesday March 7, our Concert, Chamber and Vocal Jazz Choirs performed at our second annual Choral Spring: A Pops Concert. It was a wonderful evening of outstanding musical performances of some very well-known songs spanning the last 6 decades, including the Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Queen, Adele, Imagine Dragons and Michael Bublé to name a few. The Concert Choir closed the evening with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. You can view the video of the entire song at the link below: VISITING MUSIC STUDENTS FROM REGINA Yesterday, two former Langley teachers, Russ and Deidre Baird, who are now teaching in Regina, brought their music students from Regina s Campbell Collegiate, to WGSS for an impromptu music concert in the Cafeteria. The Regina students were on their way to a music festival in BC, but the teachers contacted Mr. Fawkes and Mr. Angell and wanted to stop by to visit their old school, so they made the extra trip to Langley to perform. Here are a couple of photos from today s event! STAFF-STUDENT BASKETBALL GAME Also on Thursday, the annual Staff vs. Student Basketball Game took place at lunch. This year, the occasion was also used to honour the Senior Boys Basketball team s Provincial Championship. Prior to the actual game, the team was recognized in front of their fans and together with Coach George Bergen, the players raised the Championship Banner to the rafters in the Main Gym. And as they did all season long, the Senior Boys won the game as well!

M a r c h 3 1, P a g e 8 FENCING IN FRENCH IMMERSION As part of their Physical Education Curriculum, our Grade 8 French Immersion students were introduced to the Olympic sport of Fencing recently. Mme. Granger and Mme. Kurrein, our two French Immersion PE teachers, brought in a Fencing Club to do a three-part lesson series with our students. On day one and two, the students were introduced to the equipment, rules, and basic techniques involved in the sport. After two days of learning and practicing the fencing moves, the students concluded their learning with a full out fencing tournament on day three. This is the second year our French Immersion Department has included Fencing as part of the PE curriculum. The students love the unit and had a great time learning and getting to try out a sport that we don t often think of here in Canada! Special thanks to Mme. Granger for organizing and to the French Immersion Department for the financial support to allow this very cool learning opportunity to take place! French Immersion PE learning fencing techniques You've got to be fast on your feet! It's harder than it looks. Lunge and parry!
