1 Engineering by the Numbers By Brian L. Yoder, Ph.D. Bachelor s Degrees and Enrollment Engineering bachelor s degrees grew by 6 percent during the past year, reaching a total of 93,36 for 213. This continues a decade-long increase in bachelor s degrees, which have climbed 28 percent since 24. With enrollment up by almost 8 percent between 212 and 213, growth in degrees is expected to continue. Within college populations, sophomore and junior engineering classes showed the largest enrollment growth, each rising 9 percent over 212. As occurred in 212, smaller engineering disciplines showed some of the largest percentage increases in degrees awarded. Civil/Environmental Engineering, with 953 bachelor s degrees awarded in 213, saw a 27 percent increase over 212, and Engineering (General) with 1,554 bachelor s degrees awarded, saw a 3 percent increase. A few disciplines saw a decline in the number of bachelor s degrees awarded in 213 over 212. Architectural Engineering had the sharpest drop, 14 percent, followed by Engineering Science and Engineering Physics, 7 percent; Engineering Management, 4 percent; and Aerospace Engineering, 2 percent. Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Science and Engineering Physics should see continued decreases in graduates in the near future, since their enrollment fell by 1 percent and 3 percent, respectively, between 212 and 213. Of the many disciplines showing healthy gains in enrollment between 212 and 213, Petroleum Engineering saw the largest undergraduate increase, 23 percent. Also growing were Biological Engineering and Agricultural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Computer Science (inside engineering), Electrical/Computer Engineering, Engineering (General), Engineering Management Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and Mining Engineering. All of these saw enrollment gains of 7 percent to 15 percent. Master s Degrees and Enrollment Master s degrees inched up less than 1 percent in 213, compared with the previous year, but nonetheless reached an all-time high of 49,483, representing a 2 percent increase since 24. However, as with bachelor s degrees, Aerospace Engineering and Architectural Engineering ran counter to the upward trend in master s degrees, falling by 1 percent and 9 percent, respectively. Both also experienced drops in enrollment of 3 percent and 5 percent, respectively. Fall 213 master s enrollment stood at 112,634, 6 percent above the previous year and a substantial increase over growth rates of less than 2 percent from 211 to 212 and of less than 1 percent from 21 to 211. Master s enrollment gains are attributed to an increase in the fulltime student population, which swelled by 12 percent over 212. The number of part-time master s degree students dropped by 2 percent during the same period. Much of the increase came from a jump in full-time students studying Computer Science and Electrical/Computer Engineering. Computer Science (inside engineering) saw a 2 percent increase in enrolment of full-time master s degree students over last year and Electrical/Computer Engineering saw a 15 percent increase. Doctoral Degrees and Enrollment Doctoral degrees increased by 7 percent over 212, reaching a new high. The 213 mark of 1,764 represents a 63 percent increase in engineering doctorates since 24. Doctorates should continue to increase since enrollment is rising by 3 percent between 212 and 213, and 15 percent since 29. The largest increases in doctoral degrees were in the disciplines of Engineering Management, which saw a 45 percent increase in 213 over 212, and Mining Engineering, which saw a 144 percent increase in the same period. Engineering Students from Other Countries Nonresident aliens increased their share of engineering bachelor s degrees for the fourth consecutive year, reaching 7.8 percent in 213. After a decline in the percentage of nonresident aliens receiving a degree at the master s and doctoral levels in 212, their share of degrees grew in 213 to 45.3 percent and 55.1 percent, respectively. Female Engineering Students Women received a higher percentage of engineering bachelor s degrees again, for the fifth straight year, climbing from 17.8 percent in 29 to 19.1 percent in 213. Based on enrollment trends, we expect to see the percentage of women receiving an engineering bachelor s degree to increase slightly over the next few years. The percentage of female engineering master s degrees also rose in 213, with 23.9 percent of all master s degrees going to women. While an all-time high, this represents just a two-percentage-point increase over 24, and continues a stable trend of the last 1 years. Women took 22.4 percent of doctoral degrees, a slight increase over 212, but in the decade since 24 have seen their share grow by almost 5 percent. Based on enrollment trends, we can expect the percentage of doctoral degrees awarded to females to remain about the same over the next few years. Faculty Women comprised 14.5 percent of tenured and tenure-track faculty as of fall 212, continuing a slow increase since 21, when they represented 8.9 percent. The percentage of women who are full professors increased from 8.9 percent in 212 to 9.4 percent in 213. Female associate professors increased from 16.2 percent in 212 to 17. percent in 213, but women who are assistant professors remained the same at The percentage of African American tenured and tenure-track faculty decreased slightly from 2.7 percent in 212 to 2.6 percent in 213. Asian tenured and tenure-track faculty increased from 24.6 percent to 25.2 percent, while Hispanic tenured and tenure-track faculty decreased from 3.9 percent to 3.6 percent. American Indian and Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders, tenured and tenured track, fluctuated by a just few faculty members.
