5 Top Ten List Why You Should Choose Cal Poly Pomona PAGE 5 Here are ten good reasons why you should attend Cal Poly Pomona: 1--You will receive a quality education at an institution that is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best regional universities in the west. 2--Your education will be affordable. Our fees are consistently one of the lowest in the state for a four-year university. 3--You will learn-by-doing. Not only will you get theory in the classroom, but you will also get hands-on, practical experience in our field laboratories or through internships. 4--You will learn in a beautiful, quiet, and safe environment. Cal Poly Pomona is like a large park, an oasis in the suburbs. 5--Agriculture is one of the top industries in the state of California. Ten percent of all jobs in the state are in the agri-food industry. 6--Agriculture is more than farming. If you are interested in science, business, education, engineering, health care, or even apparel, then our college has a program for you. 7--Our graduates are in high demand. Our industry contacts tell us they like to hire our students because of their hands-on education. 8--Our college is smaller that most (2100). That means you will get personal attention, get to know your faculty and classmates, and not be just a face in the crowd. 9--Our faculty are well qualified. Most have their Ph.D. or comparable degree. All have strong contacts within their respective industries and this equates to scholarships, internships, and jobs for our students. 10--You will have fun while you learn. The our college has a student club for every major. Clubs are great for socializing (and networking!) with students and faculty, as well as with alumni and industry representatives. 6 PAGE 6 Final Details Just a few things to think about before your first day of school. Supplies - A backpack or book bag will make your life easier. Shoes - A comfortable pair of shoes are a plus. The hills and asphalt do a number on your soles. Books - You can get these before school starts and avoid waiting in long lines the first week of classes. Use your class list to find the books you need in the bookstore. Get your class list through BroncoDirect. If you don t make it to the bookstore before the quarter starts, the Bronco Bookstore will have extended hours the first week of the quarter. Go to their web site < for their hours. Computer - Having a computer will make your life a whole lot easier. Most of our faculty use a PC and Microsoft Office software. Keep this in mind when purchasing a computer so you can avoid compatibility issues when submitting assignments. Laptops seem to be the preferred choice of most students. Parking - Where are you going to park? Scope out a campus map online < static/>. See where your classes are located and decide the best place to park. The first week of the quarter, parking is really hectic because students will be adding and dropping classes. After that, it will calm down. Allow extra time to park that first week. Lots J and M are the closest to the ag building. Bronco Express - If you ve been on campus before, then you probably have seen our campus shuttles. They run all day and there are three different routes. Look for shuttle stops in the parking lots and around campus. It s FREE! A route map is available at < Parking Permit - You MUST have a parking permit when you park on campus. There are NO exceptions. You must display it on your rear view mirror. Order your permit online when you pay for your fees. Otherwise, you ll need to buy it online at Job - If you want or need a parttime job, check out the online job listings on the Career Center web site at < Click on Bronco Connection. If you need assistance, visit the Career Center at (below Carl s Jr.). Food - Where can you eat? Campus Center (97) has a Carl s Jr., Taco Bell, Panda Express, Jamba Juice, salad bar, baked goods, coffee, and a convenience store. The Bronco Student Center has Round Table Pizza, Subway, Poly Fresh Market, Peet's Coffee, Hibachi-San, and Qdoba Mexican Food. An Einstein Bros. Bagels is in Bldg. 164 and Starbucks is located in the Library. You can also eat at Los Olivos, the cafeteria for dorm residents and Denny s (located at The Suites). The ENV Café has Starbuck s coffee, breakfast goodies, and sandwiches, and is in building 7, right next door to the ag building. And there are vending machines in the patio area of the ag building. Cash - If you are short on cash, you can apply for a Short Term Loan at Student Accounting (98-B1-113). You can get a loan for books ($500) or fees (amount of fee bill), but not both. There is a $10 service charge and the loan is due in 30 days. Funds are available in 3-7 working days if for books, and immediately if for fees. Snacks - There are several vending machines in the ag building that have lots of goodies. They are located in the one-story wing just west of the main building. Exit through the doors near the Animal & Veterinary Sciences Department, walk up the stairs, cross the patio, and you are there! Adding & Dropping Classes - You can add or drop a class after orientation. For complete instructions, go to BroncoDirect and click on "Tutorials and Help Pages." Look for the tutorial on "How to Add or Drop a Class." Student ID - Order this online and receive it at Orientation. Follow the instructions sent to you by Orientation Services or call the student ID office at (909) Questions? As a new student, you will probably have lots of questions. But never fear! There are a lot of resources out there to help you. Check with: a Peer Advisor in the Student Success Center, 2-125; the instructor in your AG 100 class; the administrative coordinator in your department; and last but not least, your academic advisor! PolyView The Huntley College of Agriculture Open House ~ Saturday, March 4, 2017 You and your family are invited to attend Poly View, the Huntley College of Agriculture annual open house in March. What can you do at Poly View? It is a perfect opportunity to: Visit each of our academic departments, meet faculty, and talk with current students-- find out what it s really like to be a student here. See special displays and demonstrations. Talk to representatives from Admissions, Financial Aid, and Housing--get your questions answered. Tour the campus, residence halls, and other facilities. Learn about the student clubs and organizations available to you in the Huntley College of Agriculture. For more information, go to < and click on "Open House." See you there!
