Course Scheduling Rules Block Scheduling Camden Campus All courses must be scheduled in prescribed blocks. No courses may be scheduled during Free Period. You must offer courses using all days of the week (Monday Friday). At least 10% of your course offerings must include a Friday. At least 10% of your course offerings must be offered starting at 8:00 a.m. All MWF (3-day/week) offerings must use Blocks A4, A5 or A6. At least 10% of your undergraduate course offerings must be offered after 5:00 p.m. No more than 50% of classes can be offered between 9:35 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. (prime time).
Course Scheduling Rules Labs and Studios must fit into blocks. Block Scheduling Camden Campus Classrooms assigned to schools on the basis of % student enrollment, classroom size, and room feature (e.g., computer classroom) It is up to the College/School to ensure that all departments meet constraints and that all allocations are used. Rooms not allocated will go back to the Registrar s Office. Registrar will make final decisions about classroom assignments.
Blocks should be used for their full value across all days of the block, and not as single day uses, making the rooms unavailable on other days within the same block. Courses may be matrixed into blocks in combinations, so that the entire time and all days of the block are used. All the block spaces must be used within the Unit s allocation before additional allocations will be granted.
For example, a department is using the morning MWF block to schedule their classes. There are three patterns (3-day, 2-day, and 1-day) and a couple of options within the 3- and 2- day patterns), as indicated on the chart below:
There are several permutations within those patterns that the department can use to schedule their classes. The preference in all cases would be to maximize the usage of the time. Class 1 Class 1 Class 1 Class 2 Class 2 One 3-day a week and one 2-day a week class.
There are several permutations within those patterns that the department can use to schedule their classes. The preference in all cases would be to maximize the usage of the time. Class 1 Class 1 Class 3 Class 2 Class 2 Two 2-day a week and one 1-day a week class.
There are several permutations within those patterns that the department can use to schedule their classes. The preference in all cases would be to maximize the usage of the time. Class 1 Class 1 Class 1 Class 2 Class 2 Class 2 Class 3 Class 3 Class 3 Three 3-day a week classes.
If there are fewer classes than fill the block, do not schedule them to block out too many time segments. For example, putting this one course here: Class 1 Class 1 Class 1 prevents anybody from then using either 2-day pattern around it, or using the 1-day pattern at all. Whereas if it had been scheduled in A4 or A6, then it would be possible to use either A3 or A2 respectively.
