6 Page 6 Ocber 16, Derek Jeter a classy pressional athlete, role model By Steve Escajeda Special Courier With Major League Baseball playfs in full swing it s nice speculate on which team will emerge as th year s World Series champ. But as playfs proceed I would be rems if I didn t pay a small tribute a baseball player who nowhere near postseason. With five World Series rings, I don t think anyone feeling sorry for Derek Jeter h Yankees, who are watching playfs on TV like rest us. But what I think all true sports fans are a little dejected about fact that we ll no longer get experience what Jeter brought game both on f field. After 20 seasons playing in Bronx, Jeter called it a career. And as if all h accomplhments weren t enough, captain rose occasion a couple more times before hanging it up. As if a guy named Spielberg or Scorsese or Howard mailed in script, Jeter singled in winning run in botm ninth win h final game in Yankee Stadium. Jeter would also come through in h final big league at bat in Bosn on final day season. Jeter singled in a run before being taken out game for a pinch runner in front thouss appreciative Red Sox fans sting in unon. Now th n t first time a player has ended h career in front a New York City or Bosn crowd so why all love, emotion respect? Every decade or so a player comes around that transcends sports in a way that kind captures how you pictured game when you were a little kid. se special players play game conduct ir lives way you thought all your heroes did. Of course, all us kids eventually grow up realize those kind players, people, just don t exts anymore. Ah but y do. Sometimes players like Cal Ripkin Jr. Tony Gwynn Peyn Manning David Robinson Mariano Rivera Grant Hill A sporting view By Mark Vas elevar sry Dean Martin Show used have a novel way introducing guests. Dean was famous for not wanting work o hard it was part h charm, a gentleman remarked me during an elevar ride. He saw I had a copy Dean Me by Jerry Lew, said he was one show s producers once upon a time. He would come in one day shoot half season s shows over course about eight hours so we would have get all scripts prepared, have all entertainers ready go that day, it wasn t always easy. Sometimes we d be running around back lots studio, grabbing any celebrity we could get our hs on taking m right over, while we were Jason Witten Calvin Johnson J.J. Watt Russell Wilson Roger Federer come around remind us that despite all bad news media finds so sexy sports littered with good people. But sometimes an athlete comes around who dtinguhes himself among very best. Jeter wasn t ever best athlete on field. He wasn t biggest, strongest or fastest, but he may have always been coolest smartest. He wasn t best at anything, but he was very good at everything. It seemed like every single time Yankees needed something special spark team, it was inevitably Jeter who would make catch or get hit or steal base. H clutch plays are so legendary that he has two nicknames, Captain Mr. November. But even more than way he played game on field was way he respected it. Sometimes a player considered special by things he never did. He never showed up or team. He shooting! We d put m behind door Dean s bachelor pad set, he would open it act all surpred by who was on or end, only it wasn t an act he was really surpred. We would pray he would recognize or person, but he always did, thankfully. sry checks out, but it doesn t really matter it s all part Hollywood lore, besides, everyone has that elevar sry time door opened reveal a sports star or celebrity or rich invesr, etc. Here s one that may or may not have happened: never liked talk about himself. He never failed hustle on every play. He never got in trouble with law. He never had apologize about doing something stupid he never put himself ahead team. news surrounding every sport always seems be riddled with sries about infidelity drug arrests weapons charges ft PEDs sexual assaults domestic abuse anything else negative under sun. Men like Derek Jeter come around remind us or unld sries about honor respect selflessness work ethic reliability loyalty. Watching a Yankees game next season will seem awfully weird without #2 sting in infield. It ll certainly feel like re s something msing. re. Though y re still out re, numbers Derek Jeter-like role models are dwindling. Maybe re are young players out re who saw way Jeter conducted himself through h final season say mselves, I want live my life like that guy. elevar door a Los Angeles hotel opens reveal a scky man with a golden coiff in a white turtleneck navy-blue sport jacket. two young, longhaired men one m swigging from a beer bottle immediately recognize him as 51-year-old owner New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner.
