1 Northwest Regional Library System SUMMER 2017 June, July, & August All locations of the Northwest Regional Library System offer Summer Reading Programs for school-aged children. The theme this year is Build a Better World. Our librarians and staff have planned an exciting summer line-up. The library aspires to help students prevent the summer slide by providing a variety of engaging, educational programs that encourage discovery. Summer Reading allows children to maintain their reading skills during the summer break and foster a love of reading when they read for fun. Bay County Public Library also has Teen and Adult Summer Reading Programs. BUILD A BETTER WORLD Summer Reading Program Ukulele Orchestra of St. Andrews Thursday, June 2:00 p.m. Kick Off the summer with a singalong featuring the talented members of the Ukulele Orchestra of St. Andrews! The Art & Craft of Papermaking Wednesday, June 2:00 p.m. Lynn Elliott, Librarian and artist, will demonstrate how to turn shredded paper into beautiful art. Tampa Taiko Thursday, June 2:00 p.m. A fun filled, interactive program that covers the history of Taiko, the music of Japan and an opportunity to play the drum! Introduction to Archaeology Wednesday, June 10:00 a.m. What do archaeologists do, exactly? If dinosaurs and rocks come to mind, this is the presentation for you! Bridges with Books Thursday, June 2:00 p.m. Stories, songs and poems for Building a Better World presented by Sandra Pierce and Tania Watts, the library storytellers. It s Electric! Thursday, July 2:00 p.m. Gulf Coast Electric Coop will present a rousing presentation on electricity. Come see the sparks fly! Film Screening: Hidden Figures (2016) Tuesday, June 5:30 p.m. Hidden Figures is the story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program. St. Andrews State Park Wednesday, July 2:00 p.m. Join us for an engaging presentation from David Morris of St. Andrews State Park! Books & Bites: Author Talk with Patti Callahan Henry Friday, July 12:00 p.m. New York Times bestselling author, Patti Callahan Henry, will be our guest speaker for the summer library luncheon. World War I and America Book Club Tuesday, August 10:00 a.m. World War I and America edited by A. Scott Berg is a compilation of 1st person narrative from WWI. Teen Program: Grizzled Card Game (13-19) Tuesday, August 4:00 p.m. Learn how to play the WWI themed, cooperative card game Grizzled. Program held in Youth Services with refreshments. Archives Come Alive: Letters from poet and WWI Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae Saturday, August 2:00 p.m. Jason Hedden will present a theatrical performance based on the letters of John McCrae, which are housed in our Local History archives. McCrae wrote the In Flanders Field poem. After the performance, there will be a Poppy Art Makerspace for everyone to make their own poppy pin. The family-friendly program are held in the Meeting Room. Ukulele Social Club June 10-11:30 a.m. July 10-11:30 a.m. August 10-11:30 a.m. The first part of the class is for beginner basics. The second part is for jammin! We will have a few loaner instruments available but you are encouraged to bring your own. Ukulele Social Club will meet the first Saturday of the month from 10:00 11:30 a.m. Beginning Dulcimer June 9, July 7, and August 1:00-3:00 p.m. The first part of the class is a beginner lesson, and then a jam session! Bring your mountain dulcimer or sit in on the class to see if it s an instrument you would be interested in learning! On the Homefront: Bay County during WWI Monday, August 6:00 p.m. Local Historian, Dr. Glenda Walters, will present several fascinating stories of what Bay County was like during WWI. Program held in the Meeting Room with Refreshments. Beyond the Lens: Book and Film Series Tuesday, August 5:30 p.m. Screening of film Paths of Glory paired with the book written by Humphrey Cobb. Librarian and Historian, Gerald Giordano, will lead an engaging post-film discussion. Refreshments provided. These programs are part of World War I and America, a twoyear national initiative of Library of America presented in partnership with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, and other organizations, with generous support from The National Endowment for the Humanities. 5

We serve over 38,000 visitors each month who have access to over 318,000 books, audiobooks, DVDs, e-books, downloadable audiobooks, magazines, and more. We offer 118 public computers with Internet access, and Wi-Fi is available in all locations. Our customers have access to research databases, most of which can be accessed offsite 24/7. We also offer a variety of programming for all ages.
