7 ELAC Fall 2010 Start at ELAC Transfer to any University! Transferring from ELAC to UC Berkeley Transfer Tips from former ELAC student Karina Hermawan Jesus Escobar On Transferring to USC Initially when I was an ELAC student, I was uncertain about a lot of things. I did not know what school I wanted to transfer to and what major I wanted to pursue. I did not know which school would be daring enough to accept me, and above all, what are the ways for me to be able to afford college. Fortunately, I had a lot of help, and much of that came from teachers, the Honors Program, and the Transfer Center at East Los Angeles College. The Transfer Center offered me lots of resources, including personal statement revisions, campus tours, and scholarship application workshops in addition to introducing me to various programs such as Transferring from ELAC to USC Growing up I wasn t too concerned with academia. Upon receiving my GED at a local adult school I was too caught up hanging out on the street all day I decided my days of school were over. Soon, I turned nineteen years old, had the stigma of a felony on my record, and was facing an unpromising future. After countless times of being denied a job school was one of the few good options I had left so I decided to give it another chance and enrolled at ELAC. Experience at UCLA as well as the Transfer Alliance Project Summer Research at UC Berkeley. I later realized that participating in the summer programs really gave me an edge when I applied for scholarships and admissions to universities. To sum it up: Ask Ask Ask! Lots of people want to help; so go to your professors, Mrs. Spangler of the Honors Program, or the Transfer Center and find out about TAG, TAP, CCCP, Research Conference at UCI. Some of you might believe that you do not have time for this, but I strongly advise that you make the time as it will be very worthwhile!! There are lots of scholarship opportunities for students of Thoughts about transferring to USC first came up while I was enrolled in an Intro to Soc course. The professor, an avid educational and political activist, always stressed the importance of a higher education and pushed his students beyond their boundaries prodding us to question traditional beliefs, and to explore different topics and point of views. He brought much awareness to the classroom, and taught students to do their best and seek enrollment in prestigious universities, to different majors, race, interests, backgrounds, residency status, AB540. Check out Jack Kent Cooke Foundation at jkcf.org as well as alumni associations scholarships of different universities. Visit the schools! A small school like Pomona College or Whittier College will give you personal attention while a big school like UC Berkeley will not know you by name but maybe as a number. However, if your personality is I don t need you to hold my hand then Cal might be a better option because there are so many more opportunities with a bigger campus because they have more faculties and a wider range of fields. Do not limit yourself! Remember, START AT ELAC GO ANYWHERE be open to change, and how to begin making a difference. My experience at SC so far has been challenging, but not nearly as it is rewarding. A few years ago I would ve never guessed I d be attending one of the most renowned schools in the country. Now, I find myself studying with and learning from some of the world s most renowned researchers and experts in subject areas that captivate my imagination. ELAC made it happen for me and I m sure it can happen for you too. 7
