3 4th Annual Dia De Los Muertos Festival As event coordinator of the 4th annual Dí a De Los Muertos Event at East Los Angeles College, I would like to take this opportunity to thank many people for helping me make this program possible. In particular, I would like to express my gratitude to ASU and ASU President Romel Lopez for its continued sponsorship and generosity. Without ASU, this annual event would not be possible. Also, vendors and student organizations such as Performance East, Honors Student Club, Frame by Frame Animation, Colleges against Cancer, Kinesiology, Nontraditional Student Union, Dream Weavers, Administration of Justice, Sociology, Technology and Logistics, East Side Spirit and Pride, and Design Club that were present were essential in promoting their clubs and making this day a success. Due to the participation of all of those involved, we had an extremely successful turnout with approximately 800 people in attendance throughout the day!!!!! In addition, I want to acknowledge faculty, administration and staff at the college who were also instrumental in assisting to make this event a success. I would like to make special mention of Dean Sonia Ló pez who has always been extremely supportive of such events and is relentless in assisting me in every aspect of the event planning. Also, I would like to thank ELAC President Marvin Martínez for allowing me to continue a tradition I started in 2012 that brings a little piece of cultural awareness to the campus and community. Additionally, special thanks to Dean Evelyn Escatiola, for her unconditional support and advice to continue this event that serves our students, faculty and staff. Furthermore, I am grateful also to Susan Okawa for assisting with all necessary reservations and parking accommodations and to Leticia Conley for reaching out and being the lead person in organizing all of the ELAC clubs in attendance and for tightening all of the nuts and bolts for this event. Finally, from the Department of Chicano Studies, I would like to further acknowledge Professor Eddie Flores who has been instrumental in allowing me to spearhead this event. Gracias, Jefe, and muchas gracias also to Professors Haydee Urita- Ló pez, Beatrí z Tapia, and Nadine Bermudez for their much valued presence and help at the event and to other Chicano Studies faculty that assisted in promoting and supporting this event, including Felipe Ló pez, Gerardo Gutierrez, Mary Romo, Andrew Monzó n, Rosalinda Moctezuma and all of our adjunct instructors. Sincerely, Professor Angelita Rovero-Herrera, Department of Chicano Studies 12th Annaul Dia De Los Muertos Student Altar Exhibit As event coordinator of the 12th Annual Dia De Los Muertos Student Altar Exhibit at the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College, I would like to take this opportunity to thank many people for helping make this exhibit a success. This presentation of altars and ofrendas (offerings to the deceased) was the central focus of one section of Chicano Studies 7: History of the Mexican American in the United States I and one section of Chicano Studies 54: Mexican American in the Arts in American Culture. In these courses, students participated in a project emphasizing independent research, group participation and the creative process. Themes presented in the altars were drawn from selected course-related topics, which reflect various aspects of Mexican and Chicano culture from the Pre-Cuauhtemoc period well into the present. Our exhibit runs until December 4, This year we focused on legendary Chicanas/os in the arts and their artistic mark in history. These artists include Lalo Guerrero, Selena Quintanilla, José Montoya, Gilbert Magu Luján, Jenni Rivera, Annette Cardona, Rodolfo Corky Gonzales, Anthony Quinn, Ritchie Valens, Américo Paredes and Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada. I would like to give special thanks to the families of Ritchie Valens and Gilbert Magu Luján for attending. In addition, I am also grateful the families of José Montoya, Lalo Guerrero, Jenni Rivera and to AB Quintanilla (brother of Selena Quintanilla) for reaching out with much support as well. Moreover, much appreciation is also extended to Elías Ontiveros, son of Lupe Ontiveros, who made a special appearance during the week to meet with me at the museum and expressed his gratitude for the beautiful altar and project my students created. Building the altars and interacting with the families of those honored was an amazing opportunity for my students to experience, first hand, the positive impact a project of this sort can have on the community. I am also grateful to ASU, who sponsored the opening reception with the phenomenal food and entertainment, and from the Department of Chicano Studies, I would like to acknowledge Professor Eddie Flores, who has given me the opportunity to continue this annual exhibit and to incorporate it in my Chicano Studies courses and Professor Haydee Urita- López as well for her continued support and friendship. From the Vincent Price Art Museum, I am grateful to Victor Parra and Jorge Claustro. There are not enough words to thank both of you for your patience, dedication and much valued assistance. I am blessed to work with you. Muchísimas Gracias! 3 Con mucho cariño, Profesora Angelita Rovero-Herrera, Department of Chicano Studies
