1 8A August 31, 2017 FORT BLISS BUGLE HIRAIN TRAINING 5th Armored Bde. coordinates rocket training with C-130 FORT BLISS BUGLE August 31, A From the Field > TRAINING THE TROOPS We re getting tremendous support from the 40th Airlift Squadron and it s great to see the Soldiers come together to complete the mission safely and successfully in a joint training event like this. >> Lt. Col. Brian Newill, commander, Task Force Kodiak 1 > BIGGS ARMY AIRFIELD A TEAM OF OBSERVERS, COACHES AND TRAINERS assigned to Task Force Kodiak, 2nd Battalion 362nd Field Artillery Regiment, 5th Armored Brigade, organized and executed a joint training event with the U.S. Air Force s 40th Airlift Squadron and Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, of the Kansas National Guard, on Saturday. The High Mobility Rapid Insertion (HIRAIN) training event began with the loading of a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) multiple launch rocket system assigned to Btry. B, 2nd Bn., 130th FA, onto a C-130 assigned to the 40th Airlift Squadron. Once personnel secured the HIMARS onboard, the aircraft departed Biggs Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Felix Mena / 2nd Bn., 362nd FA Regt., 5th Armored Bde. Army Airfield and transported the rocket launcher and crew to an undisclosed location. The crew then quickly unloaded the launcher and deployed it to conduct simulated HIRAIN rocket-artillery fire missions. Upon successful completion of the fire missions, personnel reloaded the rocket launcher onto the C-130 and flew it back to the airfield. The training event saw three successful iterations, with five Btry. B launcher crews completing the training. The battery recently arrived at Fort Bliss to begin a series of training events leading up to a deployment. Our morale has been excellent leading up to this challenging training event, said 1st Lt. Curtis Parkhurst, commander, Btry. B, 2nd Bn., 130th FA. Being able to do this with the Air Force today, it s the first time many of my Soldiers have been able to do this type of training. Safety is always paramount for a delicate training event such as this one. Loading a HIMARS rocket launcher onto a C-130 is no easy task, but Senior Airman James Camera led the experienced crew as loadmaster, and made sure everything went smoothly. We don t see big equipment like the HIMARS too often, Camera said. It takes a lot of custom configuration and team work to make it happen. Safety is a big concern for us. The supervisors on my team will go over hand signals and coordination with the launcher crew to make sure we get the launcher on the C-130 without injury to any personnel or damage to the equipment. Overseeing the entire training event, from planning to execution, were the highly experienced officers and noncommissioned officers assigned to Alpha Team, Task Force Kodiak, 2nd Bn., 362nd FA, which serves under the 5th Armored Bde. as a training support battalion. Alpha Team members are subject matter experts in a wide variety of field artillery weapons systems, including the HIMARS. The role of Task Force Kodiak is to insure that Bravo Battery is fully prepared to conduct their future mission, said Lt. Col. Brian Newill, commander, Task Force Kodiak. We re getting tremendous support from the 40th Airlift Squadron and it s great to see the Soldiers come together to complete the mission safely and successfully in a joint training event like this. Task Force Kodiak is responsible for insuring Btry. B successfully completes a set of rotational training unit tasks, which include validating their readiness in critical skills. That training will include Improvised Explosive Device training, Combat Lifesaver training, individual and crew served weapons systems training and more. Their rotation at Fort Bliss concludes with a Mission Readiness Exercise, which is designed to mimic real-world scenarios and validates their readiness to deploy in support of Army missions around the world A High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) multiple launch rocket system assigned to Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Kansas National Guard, shoots a simulated rocket artillery fire mission at an undisclosed location Saturday during a joint training mission with the U.S. Air Force s 40th Airlift Squadron. Personnel load a HIMARS multiple launch rocket system onto a C-130 at an undisclosed location Saturday, after successfully completing a High Mobility Rapid Insertion (HIRAIN) field artillery training mission. First Lt. Robert Kessler, assigned to Battery B, 2nd Bn., 130th FA, KNG, communicates the status of a HI- RAIN field artillery training mission from an airstrip at an undisclosed location Saturday. Kessler provided the information to the Fire Direction Center at Biggs Army Airfield. 4 U.S. Air Force Senior Airman James Camera, assigned to the 40th Airlift Squadron, gives hand signals to the driver of a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) multiple launch rocket system during a joint training exercise at Biggs Army Airfield Saturday. 5 Personnel carefully load a HIMARS multiple launch rocket system into the cargo hold of a C-130 assigned to the 40th Airlift Squadron during a joint training mission Saturday

While departing from the Silas L. Copeland Arrival/Departure Airfield Control Group on Aug. 21, Capt. Vincent Petillo, commander, 812th MP Co., said the unit was ready for the mission ahead. They are more than ready and prepared, Petillo said. I ve been doing this for 16 years, and I m impressed with this group. They are a squared-away Reserve unit. Folks are excited to go. A lot of us have been prepping for it for more than a year. The Fort Bliss part is just coming together and adding all the missing pieces, then validate and head on to the show. Though deployments are always hard on families, Petillo said he encouraged the Soldiers to use social media and video chats to keep in contact with their loved ones while they are deployed. The hardest part of deploying this is my fourth time is the family, he said. So, I reassured the families that their Soldiers were going to be in good hands. First Sgt. Keith Comer, first sergeant, 812th MP Co., said the month of training with the 5th Armored Brigade at McGregor Range, N.M., supported by the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, helped prepare his unit s Soldiers for A Soldier assigned to the 812th Military Police Company browses donated books while he waits for his deployment flight to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Aug. 21 at the Silas L. This is my third time through Fort Bliss, so I m well versed in how everything goes. My Soldiers are the best in the Army Reserve. 4 12A August 31, 2017 FORT BLISS BUGLE Stand-to!: Ulchi Freedom Guardian By U.S. Army Pacific What is it? Ulchi Freedom Guardian is a computer-simulated defensive exercise designed to enhance readiness, protect the region and maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula. The focus of the exercise is on strategic, operational, and tactical aspects of general military operations in the Korean theater of operations. The scope of the exercise extends beyond the Korean Peninsula and takes a whole-of-government approach. The exercise is conducted at U.S. Combined Forces Command and Republic of Korea (ROK) military installations throughout South Korea. The exercise is tied to the ROK government s national defense exercise Ulchi. Training exercises like Ulchi Freedom Guardian are carried out in the spirit of the Oct. 1, 1953, ROK-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty and in accordance with the armistice. What has the Army done? In July 1976, in anticipation of the establishment of a combined forces command, the annual ROK government mobilization exercise Ulchi was combined with UNC/U.S. Forces Command/ Eighth U.S. Army s command post exercise Focus Lens. Exercise Ulchi-Focus Lens was institutionalized to enhance ROK-U.S. interoperability by training commanders and staff from both nations in wartime planning, command and control operations, intelligence, logistics and personnel procedures required for the successful defense of the ROK. The name of the exercise was changed to Ulchi Freedom Guardian in Republic of Korea and U.S. Combined Forces Command are holding the annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise Aug. 21 through today. Approximately 17,500 U.S. service members have participated in UFG 17. Why is this important to the Army? Such exercises provide the Army leadership with viable military options if necessary and helps to sharpen the Army s ability to support when required. USARPAC strives to achieve the national strategy through deterrence, maintaining contingency forces needed to defend against expanding threats. Ulchi Freedom Guardian demonstrates U.S. commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea as well as the security and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the Pacific region.

San Francisco news crew visits 35th ADA Bde. By Sgt. Monik M. A. Phan 35th ADA Bde. OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea Dena Takruri, senior correspondent with the AJ+ news company, based in San Francisco, visited the Battery D, 6th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery, 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, tactical site here Aug. 15. Takruri and her team traveled to Osan AB to gain insight on brigade s mission set in South Korea, and their capability to Fight Tonight. Fight Tonight means that our Soldiers and our equipment needs to be ready to defend Osan Air Base at a moment s notice, said Capt. Lance J. Oh, commander, Btry. D, 6th Bn., 52nd ADA. We are ready 24/7, 365 days to respond to any threat. The brigade s mission set is to protect the Korean peninsula and provide area defense from aerial attacks and missile threats. In 1953, the Korean War came to an end with the Korean Armistice Agreement and not a peace treaty. Since the signing, the U.S. military has stood side-by-side with their Republic of Korea counterparts. Takuri s goal is to explore why the U.S. military maintains a heavy presence in South Korea. Her team will visit various locations across the peninsula such as the Demilitarized Zone, Seoul and a village near the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense site. She will interview the community within those locations. She will also interview a North Korean defector. Her interviews will help her understand the country s current situation on the ground. The U.S. military has maintained a presence on the peninsula since Takruri wants to provide a thorough explanation and the importance of the long-term U.S. military presence Capt. Lance J. Oh, right, commander, Battery D, 6th Battalion, 52nd ADA, 35th ADA Bde., poses for a photo for a representative from AJ+, a news organization with a base in San Francisco, at the unit s tactical site at Osan Air Base, South Korea, Aug. 15. in South Korea in her next story. We want to show what it means to be ready to fight tonight, Takruri said. Her story will include the local community s perspectives on the ROK-US alliance and the U.S. military presence. AJ+ is a global news and current events community that uses multiple digital media platforms. They belong to Al Jazeera Media Network. We work and pursue every opportunity to work with our ROK partners here and around the Korean Theater of Operation, Oh said.
