As missions go, the concept was simple enough. The mission today is to attack and seize the village of Zambraniyah in order to defeat Donovian aggression in our area of operations, said 1st Lt. Iván Martínez, the battalion logistics planner for 4th Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. Our line companies are ready to conduct this attack and seize the objective. They ve been instructed to do so violence and aggression. The 4th Bn., 6th Inf. Regt. Regulars had support from 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 3rd ABCT, 1st AD, better known as the Death Dealers. Nearly 30 Bradley Fighting Vehicles were ready to convoy in a serial formation, dismount at the city and attack from east to west. The trip would take three hours. They re using the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System gear to simulate realistic engagements, Martínez said. For vehicles and personnel that have MILES that may be malfunctioning, we have observer controllers that are adjudicating kills on the battlefield. Samuel Keenan / Massachusetts NG Sgt. 1st Class Laura Berry holds out her pocket change at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., Tuesday. April is financial literacy month and throughout the month, service members are encouraged to learn the ins and outs of personal finance. The three biggest money mistakes of service members By Spc. Samuel Keenan Massachusetts National Guard HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. Since April is Financial Literacy Month, Joe Chesloski, a personal financial counselor more than 20 years of business and finance experience, offered his perspective on the biggest mistakes service members make their money and how they can avoid those mistakes. Be cautious credit The first mistake is not being cautious enough credit. Credit scores are calculated and reported by three private companies: Equifax, Experian and Transunion. These three credit bureaus have never revealed exactly how they calculate an individual s credit score. However, they do take into consideration how many loans a person has, how long those lines of credit have been open, and how the borrower has managed to use and pay back the money they borrowed. After adding up all the factors, these agencies assign a score that can range from 300 (the lowest possible score) to 850 (highest possible score). Maintaining a high credit score is essential if you want to get the best interest rate, explained Chesloski. Banks, credit unions and credit card companies all examine credit scores to determine if a customer will be able to pay back the money they borrow. When you buy a house, a car, or even take out student loans, all they do is look at that formula and say, OK this person is medium, high or low risk, Chesloski said. For example, if a Soldier is looking to buy and finance a new car, and has a credit score of 800, they are more likely to pay a lower interest rate. As a result, the total cost of the vehicle will be less and monthly payments will be lower. The opposite would hold true for another Soldier a 500 credit score. I ve seen people pay anywhere between 18 percent to 20 percent interest rate on a car, Chesloski said. It puts them in a really challenging position. In order to avoid accumulating too much debt, which can negatively impact a credit score, Chesloski recommends limiting the number of credit cards service members carry and emphasizes paying off existing debt as soon as possible. 2 2A April 5, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE BATTLE Continued from Page 1A southeast. The Rifles from 3rd Bn., 41st Inf. Regt. took casualties immediately as the OCs began adjudicating the simulated kills on the battlefield. MILES gear on the Soldiers made sounds alerting combatants when they became casualties. When this happened, Soldiers sat on the ground and took their helmets off as a sign that they were out of the fight. We were aggressive coming up to the objective, said Staff Sgt. Jaime Quintero, a platoon sergeant assigned to Company B, 4th Bn., 6th Inf. Regt. Then we started taking heavy contact, so we started doing maneuver drills. The mission for Quintero s platoon was to seize control and clear a three-story building on the east side of the city, while another platoon acted as the support-by-fire element on the northern end of the city. When Quintero s platoon reached their objective, they immediately dismounted the Bradley and began clearing the building. They cleared the first floor pretty good, Quintero said. Once they started getting to the second floor, they started taking more casualties. We were expecting heavy resistance, but not quite as large as this one. As Quintero s platoon worked to achieve their goal, 2nd Lt. Michael Dancona, an OP- FOR platoon leader assigned to Co. B, 3rd Bn., 41st Inf. Regt., had his platoon defend a building at the northern end of the town. We were tasked to set an engagement area development in the north side of the CACTF, Dancona said. Our role was to engage as many Bradleys and dismounts as we could and we ended up knocking out eight Bradleys using AT-4 (Anti-Tank Weapons). Having a very easily defendable building, along working AT-4s and MILES, that definitely helped us. Once the exercise reached the end, Soldiers had an opportunity to assess the effect this realistic training had on their performance. A firefight like this one prepares my guys for the real deal because it actually shows them what to expect when everything just doesn t go right, Quintero said. How to adjust from the hit, and continue the mission until it s finished. By giving leaders such as Quintero and Dancona the opportunity to train in a realistic and tough exercise such as this, 3rd ABCT helped them meet their goal of operating in an environment where they could shoot, move and communicate effectively. Leadership, adaptiveness, readiness, effective communication, and the exercise tested many other Pfc. This is definitely the biggest firefight I ve ever been in, just because of the amount of firepower they had compared to us, said Pfc. Michael Bryers, an Infantry Soldier assigned to Co. B, 3rd Bn., 41st Inf. Regt. A firefight like this makes you calm even if you re getting shot at. It still makes you think and do what you re trained to do. It boosts confidence for sure and honestly it just brings everybody together. 1st AD to hold SHARP Summit By Fort Bliss Bugle Staff The 1st Armored Division plans to hold a Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Summit at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. 4 4A April 5, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE Terrance Bell / U.S. Army New drill sergeants pose for a photo after a belting ceremony at the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy in Fort Jackson, S.C. The Army is sending Advanced Individual Training platoon sergeants back to the academy for a 10-day conversion course, qualifying them to be drill sergeants. According to officials, all AIT platoon sergeants will be replaced by the end of the fiscal year. AIT sites welcome back drill sergeants By Dawn Arden Fort Leonard Wood Public Affairs FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. In January 2008, the Army began the process of removing drill sergeants from Advanced Individual Training sites and replacing them platoon sergeants. One decade later, the reverse transition has begun the first wave of noncommissioned officers graduating March 8 from a 10-day conversion course qualifying them to wear the drill sergeant identification badge. In the past, noncommissioned officers who trained to be AIT platoon sergeants attended the first six weeks of the nine-week long drill sergeant school before splitting off to learn other things, such as attending the master resilience course. According to officials, although AIT platoon sergeants proved effective and provided ready Soldiers for the nation, the return of drill sergeants is expected to improve the standards and discipline of new Soldiers. Making the transition is mandatory for those who have graduated from the AIT platoon sergeant course on or after Jan. 21, Platoon sergeants who have between 13 to 18 months of time can volunteer to extend for an additional year to become eligible. Master Sgt. Christopher Foley, 1st Engineer Brigade operations sergeant major, said the brigade has 27 platoon sergeants at installations across the country, 15 of which are at Fort Leonard Wood. (As a whole,) 15 must attend training; six are in the option window, and six do not have enough time remaining, Foley said. Two in that option window have already volunteered and will incur a third year of duty. Foley added that the brigade has already had three of their Fort Leonard Wood platoon sergeants attend the course, making the transition to drill sergeant. The brigade 10% your 1st visit Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Collier, Victor Company, 262nd Quartermaster Battalion, marches QM School troops to the dining facility at lunchtime March 15. He is among the first wave of installation Advanced Individual Training platoon sergeants who attended a U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy course that converted them to drill sergeant status. plans to have all eligible platoon sergeants converted by July. Staff Sgt. Ericka Kong-Martinez, assigned to Company A, 554th Engineer Battalion, is one of those recent graduates. She has spent one year as a platoon sergeant and, after volunteering to extend for a year, will spend the next two as a drill sergeant. It s a good opportunity to see the difference between both roles, Kong-Martinez said. Now I see the difference in trainees reactions from a platoon sergeant to an actual drill sergeant. They react a lot faster when a drill sergeant addresses them. She added, The discipline level is higher. It shouldn t be, but it is. Here, the 3rd Chemical and 14th Military Police brigades, together, have approximately 38 platoon sergeants that will also transition or be replaced. In the end, approximately 600 current platoon sergeants across the Army will make the conversion to drill sergeant. All are expected to be in place by the end of the fiscal year. 5 By 2nd Lt. Kristen Kuri 1st Bn., 7th ADA Regt., 11th ADA Bde. AL DHAFRA AIR BASE, United Arab Emirates Regardless of the theater, mission readiness is the focus of commanders at every level. It measures the ability of a unit to accomplish its assigned mission. In its most competent state, a unit is prepared to move into position and accomplish its mission. For the 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Top Notch 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, this means embracing the new Army practice of moving away from the Army Force Generation model and adopting the Sustainable Readiness Model. In the SRM, the focus is on continuously maintaining a unit s readiness to execute any mission anywhere in the world while remaining committed to strong, ready and resilient Soldiers and families. To do this, it requires supporting three pillars: training readiness, equipment readiness and Soldier readiness. Battery D, 1st Bn., 7th ADA Regt., specifically, has displayed mission readiness this past quarter and going into next quarter by conducting daily air and missile defense operations and preparing for Gunnery Table VIII certification, all of which encompass the three pillars. Basic soldiering skills, paired daily AMD operations and mobility training, laid the groundwork for the Table VIII certification. Soldiers are responsible for certifying on their Table IV examination prior to executing the collective Table VIII certification. This past quarter, the Soldiers of Co. D have maintained a rigorous schedule that includes inspections and personal study blocks. Training readiness is a focus every day as it is pertinent to our current mission. According to Pfc. Christopher Harris, a network switching systems operator from Meniffee, California, training readiness is participation and our ability to be 100 percent ready to complete the mission. When not involved in day-to-day site operations, crews are conducting rehearsals and performing standalone mobility training, as well as battery collective mobility training. Upon completion, trained individuals and/ or crews conduct an after action review, which is crucial to developing the Soldiers understanding of what is necessary to complete a more successful and efficient exercise during the next annual recertification. It is the responsibility of each individual Soldier to take ownership of the training. In regards to individual training, it is our job to understand the why behind the commander s intent and then disseminate that information and emulate it as well, said 1st Lt. David Earle, a tactical control officer from Marietta, Georgia. That means we FORT BLISS BUGLE April 5, A Air Defense unit maintains readiness gunnery training Staff Sgt. Frank Carroll / U.S. Army The Battery D, 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, Top Notch 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, reload team executes a guided missile transporter reload at Al Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates, March 19, to validate their ability to quickly and safely replace interceptors during engagements. need to practice what we preach and take the initiative in our training. In the event of a real-world change of mission or location movement, the ultimate success of such a transition falls on the Soldiers foundation of training. The more prepared and equipped they are, the more likely it is that the transition will be smooth and seamless. Safety is instrumental in the conduct of all operations. Safety briefs are conducted before all exercise and mobility blocks. This allows leaders and Soldiers to review the given operation, identify risk or hazards and implement mitigation measures to ensure safe execution of the operation. This also allows leaders to conduct inspections of every Soldier s personal protective equipment prior to commencing an operation. Leaders in the unit strive to ensure that Soldiers not only have their PPE present, but also understand the importance of donning it throughout the operation. The practice of performing the drills PPE builds muscle memory for all individual Soldiers so that in the event of a change in the current state of events, they will continue to follow their protocols safely out of habit and will ultimately prevent safety-related injuries. To maintain maximum operational readiness of its assigned equipment, Co. D s approach is to be proactive to prevent being reactive. In the two months leading up to the mobility training window, operators exercised on assigned equipment and conducted indepth preventative maintenance checks and services to ensure faults were identified and bring components and vehicles to fully mission capable status. It is important to consistently PMCS our equipment, to ensure the clerks are maintaining paperwork and ensure parts are ordered, said Sgt. Amy Flores, the battery s equipment, records and parts supply specialist from Jacksonville, Florida. If equipment falls below a (certain) percentile, the battery is no longer FMC. Operators documented faults and ordered parts immediately to expedite the equipment recovery process. The maintenance section supported this operation by monitoring maintenance schedules and working to maintain equipment ahead of schedule when time and mission allowed. The company s hard work and dedication to the assigned mission and weeks of training and preparation culminated on one day the completion of Battery Table VIII certification. All the time and effort spent training was clearly evident to the standardization team. The entire evaluation was completed on the first day all crews receiving a go.

It is one thing to be able to synchronize ballistic missile defense capabilities when you re able to put faces to those capabilities, said Capt. Cassandra Steiner, commander of the Team Titans. It galvanizes a sense of purpose in mission and commitment to one another. U.S. Navy Cmdr. Victor Garza, commanding officer of the USS Higgins, expressed gratitude for the joint service that the 32nd AAMDC and 12th MDB offer. This opportunity was a great joint experience for both the Army and Navy. To be able to see the day-to-day life element of Sailors that support the same mission as we do is incredible, said 1st Sgt. Vincent Branchetti, first sergeant for Team Titans. It truly demonstrated the drive and initiative all Soldiers and Sailors have to execute such an important mission. Additionally, the rarity for all operators to experience one another s working environment inculcated shared esprit de corps. Staff Sgt. Randall Morris of Team Titans, a newly recruited air defender from the Infantry, appreciated the experience. Visiting the USS Higgins was a great experience. To see the operational impact that both our section and their team provides was outstanding, especially as a new air defender, Morris said. I am grateful to know we have such a great team supporting the shared mission we execute every day, especially given our strategic impact to defending the homeland. The opportunity to combine all warfighters and exchange experiences was unmatched. Each service member got the chance to experience the capabilities and equipment other units utilize to conduct a holistic mission. This mission has been the most rewarding of my career and one I will most definitely continue if given the opportunity, Morris said. Although the mission set has its complexities, it is exciting to know the purpose remains to deter aggression in the region and protect strategic resources, said Staff Sgt.
