Commanders Commentary The Threats by Col. Mark Chidley Commander, 132d Wing Seven years ago, on May 2, 2011, U.S. Special Operations Forces killed Osama bin Laden during a raid on his secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. As we all know, the raid marked the culmination of a decade-long manhunt for Bin Laden, the man who ordered the coordinated attacks of September 11th, For all of us in the military, 9/11 started our involvement in Afghanistan and then Iraq and led to the Global War on Terrorism. As righteous as Bin Laden s death was, the war on trans-national terrorists like ISIS and Al Qaeda continues. The threat remains and we must remain committed and vigilant. As we head towards Memorial Day weekend and the summer we thought would never arrive, I ask you to think about another threat to all of us and our families: our vehicles. Since 2000, over 650,000 Americans have died on our roadways, more than were killed in all the wars of the 20th century (about 630,000). I don t know about you, but that statistic is sobering to me. Driving is simply one of the most dangerous things we do. As we look forward to the critical days of summer, please be safe. Put down your cell phone, focus on the task of driving, and use a designated driver or Uber if you are drinking. Get to where you are going so you can stay in the fight! *The front page -Former 132d Wing commander Shawn Ford is promoted to Brig. General and assumes the role of deputy adjudant general of the Iowa Air National Guard. (SSgt. Michael J. Kelly) Switching gears, May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. It was established in 1992 by President Bush Sr. in order to recognize the history, concerns, contributions, and achievements of Asian and Pacific Americans. What do you know about the 442d Regiment, the most decorated unit in American history? I encourage you to find out more. May is also when we will hold an active shooter exercise in coordination with the Des Moines Police and Fire Departments. It will be an extensive test of our base defense and response readiness and everyone should be prepared. Finally, this drill we have a couple of events I want to discuss. First, the ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve) will be briefing Saturday and Sunday morning at roll calls to cover what it does and how it can help you when you are on orders away from your employer. ESGR is a DoD program, staffed by committed volunteers, that seeks to foster employer support for the Guard, so please welcome the ESGR folks you see this weekend. The second event is the 2nd Annual BBQ competition! Please join the competitors in front of Bldg 100 during the day for multiple Wingman Day events, and show up at the SnakePit at 1500 to watch the judges decide who brought the best ribs to the table. It should be another fun afternoon. Thank you for what you do. This drill, I will be in the Civil Engineering Squadron to meet Airmen and answer questions. Have a great drill weekend! 1

Chaplains Corner A few years ago I conducted a funeral for a woman within my community; less than a year later I was called again by the family to do her son s funeral. The funeral director explained what happened; he and his wife were riding motorcycles one summer afternoon when they pulled out of a gas station they were struck by a car who failed to yield. This was not the only tragedy that occurred recently for this family. That same summer the deceased man s daughter was with friends on the river when she was caught by a strong current and died leaving behind a young child. These two tragic accidents are a reminder of the fragile life we live and how quickly our life can end. After a long cold winter, many of us are eager to get back on the motorcycle, go on a road trip, and get back on the river. As the temperatures rise in the spring there is also a rise in fatal accidents, but there is one thing we can do to reduce this statistic which is to develop a healthy fear. Having a healthy fear means respecting that which may be dangerous and taking precautions to stay safe. Having a healthy fear of motorcycles would lead you to wear a helmet, protective clothes, and look twice before pulling out. A healthy fear of water means you will reduce alcohol consumption, wear life jackets, and keep a tight rein on children. Have fun and stay safe! -Chaplain Tim Frasher OPSEC Greetings from the newest member of the OPSEC team. Me. I am SMSgt Tom Nash. Many folks may know me or know my face and in the future many more of you will know me as I educate people about OPSEC. My first topic is one that will be recurring in this portion of the newsletter, Social Media. I have been reading many headlines lately about active shooters. They are breaking news on CNN and other national outlets. Many times they turn out to be an exercise, revealed over social media. A recent example comes from Ft Bragg where a soldier tweeted that there was an active shooter on base. What they failed to mention was that it was an exercise. This is just one of many examples as this occurs every couple of months. Those tweets were probably meant for just a few friends in a semi-joking manner or to express an emotion about the exercise. However, the tweet was launched into the social media web and became a huge deal and escalated into national news. Was that the intention? No. Facebook and Twitter and other social media, have become fertile grounds for OPSEC concerns. If this tweet from a soldier was able to be picked up by national news outlets, what could an adversary do with a seemingly innocent tweet about an upcoming deployment or event happening on base? What kind of things do we want people to know about us? Take that minute to think about what your tweet or Facebook post would look like on CNN before you post. Also think about what a bad guy could do with the information you have on social media. Taking that moment to re-read your post, with these thoughts in mind, is just a part of your role in what we call OPSEC. 2

Environmental & Safety Improving the Unit Process Operations: Safety IG- Tommy s Toolshed TDYs and Deployments! -Chief Master Sgt. Tommy Thompson, IG Office It can be hard to fit more on your plate when you re learning new jobs, or you ve been tasked to be in charge of more than one program. Training is meant to increase your knowledge base to increase your effectiveness to the unit. If you re bogged down with too much, speak up. If you could do more, also speak up. There are training opportunities that your supervisor may already be aware of, and could be considering you for, but if you haven t mentioned anything, and it could pass you by. Take each opportunity you can to keep your supervisor involved in your development, if you ve maxed out every training opportunity available, consider asking about PME or other job opportunities. There are so many opportunities, don t let one pass you by. It could unknowingly hold you or the unit back from success! 4

6 Finance Financial Tidbits - Military Pay o On the last day of your short tour order, please sign and have your certifier/supervisor sign in AROWS before 1100 to ensure your order gets submitted in a timely manner for payroll. o If you do chose to opt-in to the BRS, please ensure your LES and TSP agency matching contributions are being deposited to your TSP account. o Entitled to Special Duty Assignment Pay? Please ensure the duty claimed on the Pay Form (DD114) has duty already performed and paid. Otherwise the Pay Form (DD114) will be disapproved and sent back you. - Finance Hours o Monday: , Tuesday-Friday: , Saturday Drill: Immidiatly following roll call-1530, Sunday Drill: Medical Minute The Medical Group would like to clarify the process for medical exemptions for the Air Force Physical Fitness test (AFPT). If an airman anticipates needing an AFPT exemption or has a condition for which there is uncertainty as to whether an exemption from any components of the AFPT may be necessary, the following processes need to be completed. 1. The MDG will need the airman to take the AFPT exemption form to the local treating medical provider for completion. This form needs to be completed in full and signed by the treating medical provider. For AFPT exemption purposes, a treating provider is defined as a MD, DO, NP or PA--medical doctor, doctor of osteopathic medicine, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Exemption forms that are not signed by a medical provider with one of these credentials will not be accepted. (for example - a chiropractor that is a DC is not acceptable for a fitness exemption) The form also must be dated within one year from the time of request for an exemption. Forms greater than one year old will not be accepted. 2. Attached with the signed AFPT exemption form must be MEDICAL TREATMENT RECORDS related to the condition for which an exemption is being requested. Patient educational handouts, pharmacy print outs, patient informational hand outs and patient discharge instructions do not constitute medical treatment records and will NOT be accepted as medical evidence for consideration of an AFPT medical exemption. 3. Medical treatment records showing evaluation of the condition for which an AFTP exemption is being requested must be dated within one calendar year of the time of the request. Even if the medical condition is a chronic long standing condition, the military medical provider needs a current (w/in one year) evaluation from a treating provider in order to make a determination as far as AFPT limitations and exemptions. 4. When all of the above are completed, the MDG staff will review the documents for completion. If the documents are complete, an appointment will be scheduled with a military provider for AFTP exemption consideration. If approved, an AF form 422 will be given at that appointment that you will need to take with you to your test. 5. Please present all medical documentation to the MDG at least one drill prior to the month for which the AFPT medical exemption will be needed.

Leadership Dangers of Social Media 168th Cyber Operations Squadron Superintendent Chief Master Sgt. Richard Noyes One of the most ubiquitous forms of communications today is social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram etc. With the click of a button, the ability to connect instantly with our friends and family and co-workers is now taken for granted. The use of social media sites has changed the way we communicate as well as how we project our views and feelings to others. Information is flowing faster than ever before because of these sites, and if you re not careful, you can unintentionally harm yourself, friends, or loved ones or even your career. On the surface, social websites are fun, beneficial, and productive. But when you go deep into the pages of tweets, pictures, and comments, social media sites can be a frightening tool used against the user. The news is ripe with examples of a post or tweet gone wrong, some beginning with the most innocent of intentions. A great rule of thumb is to never post anything you would not want a boss or employer to see. One example of a post gone wrong is the experience of a former Marine, twenty six-year old Brandon J. Raub, who served tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the Rockland Times the Marine posted lyrics from an anti-government song on his private Facebook account in the summer of 2012., Raub was visited by both federal and local law enforcement and was then involuntarily detained for psychiatric evaluation without having his rights read to him, and the footage of his arrest was posted on YouTube for everyone to see. Although he was eventually acquitted of all charges, the fact remains that his posts on Facebook caused grief for both him and his loved ones As you go through your career, a social media presence can be a valuable tool. Treat your page as if it s your own brand by showcasing your skills - and I don t mean drinking skills. If you re an artist or writer, use social media to express your beliefs and passions. If you want to start up a small business, connect with the local community through these sites. Social media sites aren t just for gossip, reading the thoughts of celebrities, or telling everyone how good your dinner was. These websites are there to help your image and to connect with people that have similar tastes and career goals. When you re thinking about sharing a picture of yourself or family take a critical look. Posting a hateful comment because you are aggravated about something may require a cooling off period. Remember to think twice before you click send because it could ruin your reputation and drastically alter your future. A great rule of thumb is to never post anything you would not want a boss or employer to see. 7
