1 Vol. 32, Issue 4 April 2017 It s BBQ Weather... By Col. Shawn D. Ford Commander, 132d Wing COMMAND COMMENTARY Spring is close and I m happy to announce that the Enlisted Advisory Council has volunteered to organize our first ever 132d Wing BBQ competition over May drill. We are still trying to figure out what the winner will get, but needless to say, it will include some serious bragging rights. Why BBQ? Well, it is the first thing that comes to mind in spring, and in the words of Anthony Bourdain, Barbecue may not be the road to world peace, but it s a start. I ve heard a lot of hype about BBQ from the Carolinas, Kansas City, St. Louis, Memphis, and even Texas, but I would argue that the 132d deserves a place in the history books and this is your chance to prove it. Here are the basics (expect more details from the EAC in the near future): 1. Each squadron will be allowed to submit one team (ATKS, OSS, DTOC, RC-26, Cyber Ops, 232 nd IS, 233 rd IS, ISS, CE, Comm, FSS, MDG, Wing/FM/Contracting, SFS, and LRS). If a squadron does not intend to participate, we will open up that slot to another team. 2. The Wing will provide each team with two racks of ribs the morning of Saturday drill. 3. Each team will present their ribs to the judging panel at 1530 in the Snake Pit. The excess ribs from the competition will be brought to the Snake Pit for the rest of the Wing to taste. Unfortunately, we don t have enough grills and equipment to outfit every team so it will be up to the team to make sure they have what they need to make their best ribs. I would encourage you to discuss with your commanders a team name and who you think should represent your squadron so that the grill master and their crew can start planning for the ultimate competition. Let the games begin. Finally, on March 9 th, I had the opportunity brief Maj Gen Orr on the accomplishments of our Wing over the past 6 months. Needless to say, I had a lot to talk about and I want to thank each and every one of you for the hard work you put into the service to your community, state, and nation. Gen Orr was very engaged and it was clear to me that we are fortunate to have a TAG that cares about the 132d. You make my job easy and it is a pleasure to brag about what you do. I am proud to represent such an incredible group of professionals. Thank you. Have a good drill. 1
2 CHAPLAIN S CORNER By Lt. Col. Gabriel Casciato Chaplain, 132d Wing Catholic Mass Saturday 1500 Protestant Worship Sunday 1100 Sophie must be an amazing young woman. The British woman was backpacking in Australia in March of this year when she met Lee. Lee told her that backpackers were more likely to be eaten by crocodiles. On a dare, he attempted to prove it by jumping into the crocodile invested Johnstone River (Caution- us-australia-crocodile-iduskbn16s0ab < Caution- > ). He was immediately grabbed by a crocodile. He punched it in the face and eventually got it to let go. He suffered serious injuries to his left arm that required surgery. When asked to account for his actions he said, "Stupidity." But he did get a date with the lovely lass. It raises a question. "Was it worth it?" I'm not sure the exact severity of his injuries but if it required surgery to correct, it seems a safe assumption that he was risking permanent disability or even death when he impulsively jumped into that river. We make a multitude of decisions every day. Many of these decisions are also made with very little thought... and can still have long term consequences. I know a guy who (I am not making this up) decided to become a missionary to a "closed" country when he drove his friend to the airport and found there was an available seat on the plane. He left with nothing, not even a toothbrush or a change of clothes and for decades has continued his work there. I know a young lady who was texting while driving and hit a bicyclist. Both lives altered immediately and irrevocably by an impulsive decision. I know people who have saved or lost entire careers based on the snap decisions of a moment. The common thread between all these decisions is that they reveal character. Character displays itself, often most clearly, in the choices we make when we don't have time to think. We can talk about integrity, but when put on the spot for a mistake is our first response to divert the blame? We can talk about courage but do we run into the street to save the child? The actions of a moment, sometimes show us parts of ourselves that we are proud of. Other times, it shows us parts of ourselves that we wish weren't there. Lee's character is apparently one of impulsivity and stupid grandiosity. What do my decisions reveal about my character? What do yours? It's a different question. The question isn't who do we want to be, but who ARE we, as evidenced by our lives. And are we ok with the answers we find? This isn't a subject to evaluate others. But it is a call to evaluate ourselves. As always, if you want to explore these questions more, your chapel staff is here to help. Ch C 2

5 AIRMANS CREED HISTORY Written by former LRS First Sergeant in 2010, Senior Master Sgt. Rebecca Starmer, who currently serves as Communications Flight Plans Branch Chief The Airman s Creed: Last Stanza (Article 5 of 5 in the Airman s Creed Series). The Airman s Creed Last Stanza: I AM AN AMERICAN AIRMAN. WINGMAN, LEADER, WARRIOR. I WILL NEVER LEAVE AN AIRMAN BEHIND. I WILL NEVER FALTER, AND I WILL NOT FAIL. We have arrived at the last verse and in many ways the most powerful. All the verses start the same but each time the line repeats it seems to gain momentum and power. The first line is followed by three words; Wingman, Leader, Warrior. These words perform two functions. First, they succinctly sum up what the previous three verses have already stated in greater detail. Secondly, they describe the heart and mission of every Airman. But it is the last three lines that really show the character and integrity of every Airman. I will never leave an Airman behind, I will never falter and I will not fail. The last verse is simply stated yet very powerful. The last verse is still a commitment of our actions to our country but also a pledge to our fellow Airman and ourselves. This is the verse that gives me the same chills I get when I sing the last line of the national anthem; The land of the free and the home of the brave. This ends the series on the Airman s creed. I have given you my interpretation, based on research and my own convictions. As you become more familiar with these lines you will find your own meaning. I challenge each of you to commit these words to memory as you have already committed them into action. Have a great UTA! 6 SAPR CORNER Sins of Omission Ann McMillan, SARC, 132d Wing 14 years of age I m sitting in Mass listening to Father Cassidy s sermon, he began to talk about the sins of omission. That we can sin by doing nothing, by taking no stance and remaining silent. I was almost knocked out of my pew. So, I not only had to not do something bad but I needed to speak up or take a stand when I saw something wrong. Incredible. I had to take time to digest that information. It was not only my doing but my lack of doing I had to think about, be aware and maybe change how I did things. I could no longer sit back, not get involved and be clear of conscience. Lack of action could be as sinful as action. When SAPR started teaching about bystander intervention I had pondered, read and researched the topic. Father Cassidy was my teacher of bystander intervention I just didn t know what it was called. When I joined the Army I was taught value of I ve got your back. There are lots of examples in history of stepping up. Preventing harm, protecting others from harm. The understanding if you harm one you harm all is not new. And our responsibility to act. That too, is not new. It can be difficult saying something when that behavior is happening in your own environment. We have an example of a former marine stepping up when he became aware of hurtful and harmful picture posted on a web site. ( Hopefully public acknowledgement will encourage more people to step forward and join their voice alongside the Marine veteran to say, not in our Air Guard, Air Force, military, country, world Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) theme is "Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission remaining silent will not protect our People or our Mission. That causes it to release methane which is 20 to 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas Shop smart. SAFETY 8
9 132D WING ABOUT ME: ISRG 232/ d Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance Group- Certifications with in the Targeting Enterprise The 132 ISR Group has three specialized career certifications which ensure the desired targets are struck with Operating Commanders desired weapons effects. Precise Point Mensuration (PPM) is the process of deriving a three dimensional point on the earth s surface. There is a latitude, longitude and an elevation. There are various methods for deriving these points. The end result is a Joint Desired Point of Impact (JDPI). This is the point that a GPS guided munition is seeking when released. Collateral damage estimation (CDE) is unintentional or incidental injury or damage to a person(s) or object(s) that would not be lawful military targets in the circumstances ruling at the time. Limiting the collateral damage to the least amount possible, preferably none, is the overall mission for CDE analysts. The CDE analyst will limit or eliminate the collateral damage through use of non-lethal capabilities and using lower collateral damage weapons. The CDE analyst combines their products with the Weaponeering solutions, Joint Desired Point of Impact Graphic (JDPI-G), and all the Target Graphic products for the mission planning cells to review for later operations. Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) is the timely and accurate estimate of damage resulting from the application of military force against a predetermined objective and is performed in 3 analytical stages: Phase I Estimates the extent of physical/functional damage to the target element through the use of military force. Most of this information is forwarded back up to the commander with hours of a strike. Phase II Builds on and is mostly conducted concurrently with phase I. The questions answered here are: Did we physically/functionally destroy or damage this target? And if so what are the recuperation times? Phase III BDA A deeper look at the target system as a whole taking many factors into consideration and determining how the damage/destruction of this particular target has affected the adversary s ability to keep up the fight. 9
