Commanders Commentary Making a Difference by Col. Mark Chidley Commander, 132d Wing Every year on March 25th, the United States celebrates National Medal of Honor Day. Since the first Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded on March 25, 1863, to Private Jacob Parrott, there have been 3,500 recipients, but there are only 71 still living. One of those is retired Army Major Drew Dix. He wrote an article for this year s commemoration asking all of us to reflect on the blessings we have as Americans and to thank those who have willingly and selflessly served and sacrificed to protect our way of life, as well as those who choose every day to do the right thing. He also challenged all Americans to help make our communities and our country better for everyone by embracing the values embodied in the Medal of Honor: courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity, citizenship and patriotism. He closed with his belief that there is a hero in everyone and asked How will you make a difference? *The front page -An RPA pilot tries out Virtual Reality goggles during an RPA DMO conference in March. (SSgt. Michael J. Kelly) I share that with you because I think we are all capable of much more than we think. I also believe that being part of this Wing gives each of us an opportunity to make a real difference. When I gave our Unit Status Brief to MG Orr on March 5th, it was clear that the 132d Wing is indeed making an impact. All across our Wing, from RPA to ISRG to Cyber Ops to the DTOC, from the Mission Support Group and Medical Group and Wing Staff, and the RC-26, we are making a significant contribution to our nation s security. One obvious example is our RCP deployers that leave in April and July, but there are many more. Every day you put on the uniform, you show your commitment, patriotism, courage and sacrifice. Let s keep making a difference. Looking ahead, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and this year s theme is Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission. Since 2012, the DoD s annual reports on sexual assault in the military have reported regular declines in the prevalence rates of sexual assault. That said, we must continually build and sustain a culture that does not tolerate sexual assault at the 132d Wing. Our military is the most trusted institution in America and we should be proud of that. The crime of sexual assault must not threaten those who have volunteered to serve here. April is also the Month of the Military Child and it is an opportunity to honor the commitment, contributions and sacrifices of our military children. Our job is hard, let s also remember to thank our families that make our service possible. Over April drill, please take the time to complete the Unit Climate Assessment. I apologize for the technical difficulties last month, but I have been assured it is good to go now. The UCA is an important tool for your leadership team to make changes based on your feedback. Finally, we have the Operations Group Change of Command on Saturday afternoon, and Brigadier General Ford s promotion on Sunday afternoon, please try to attend if you can. Thank you for what you do. This drill, I will be in the Mission Support Group to meet Airmen and answer questions. Have a great drill weekend! 1

Chaplains Corner 2 Kings 2: Then Elijah said to him, Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the Jordan. And he replied, As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you. So the two of them walked on. 7 Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. 8 Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you? Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit, Elisha replied. 10 You have asked a difficult thing, Elijah said, yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours otherwise, it will not. 11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel! And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. 13 Elisha then picked up Elijah s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah? he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. We would do well to follow Elisha s example in relation to his mentor, Elijah. Who is your mentor? Do you have a mentor on the job? What about a spiritual mentor? Elisha was bold. We often think of respecting our mentors by following their instructions. Yet, Elijah tells Elisha to stay, Elisha says, As the Lord lives and as you live, I won t leave you (v. 6). We often get caught up in trying to outdo the great people around us or we shrink away because we lack confidence. However, Elisha values this relationship and wants everything that he can get from it. He even asks Elijah for a double portion of his spirit. Elisha wants to be blessed, and he is willing to ask for it. This passage encourages us to seek a spiritual mentor and to learn all we can. Let us not be afraid to seek out the spiritually mature and to ask for a double portion of the Spirit. -Maj. David Doty 2

Environmental & Safety Improving the Unit Process Operations: Safety IG- Tommy s Toolshed TDYs and Deployments! -Chief Master Sgt. Tommy Thompson, IG Office Whether you re heading out the door to learn your job or support the mission, your education and well-being is very important. TDYs are meant to train you for the mission, help you learn what is new with your career field or a new skill. Make sure that whatever you learned on your TDY you bring back to base and share with your fellow Airmen. If you keep the information to yourself then the unit won t improve. Deployments are our opportunity to showcase our skills, whether you re working in communications or hitting the ground in defense of the base, your job is important. What you bring to the table is unique, no one has the experiences you have and the same with your co-workers. Be sure to utilize your skills overseas and learn from your unit. When you return be sure to share that information so everyone can improve. You are a valued member of the 132d and TDYs and Deployments only strengthen the knowledge of our personnel. Keep up the good work, and be sure to share with your unit upon your return. 4

Leadership Responsibility 132d Communications Flight Chief Chief Master Sgt. Geoff Richards I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America. Being responsible shows good character, maturity and reliability and is critical in our military service. When we depend on a person to do something, it means that we believe the person is responsible enough to handle the task. In saying that you need to take responsibility over your life and happiness, does not mean that a person never suffers through accident, through the fault of others, or that a person is responsible for everything that happens to them. Some things you have control over, others you do not. Being responsible refers to our ability to make decisions that serve our own interests and the interests of others. We first need to be responsible for ourselves before we can be responsible for others. In learning to be more responsible it is important that we know our limitations. Often people around us enable us to divert accountability by not providing honest feedback for our actions. Without people to hold us accountable it creates an environment that feeds the belief that the right thing is being done when that may not be the case. Everyone needs to have people that will keep them honest by giving harsh feedback when it is needed to help maintain our moral compass. It is impossible to learn from your mistakes if you don t acknowledge you ve made them. Many of our greatest successes follow failures. It is often easier to try and hide mistakes as we generally are overly concerned that admitting we are fallible will lead others to think less of us. But acknowledging our errors, apologizing, and working to correct the problem will normally increase the respect our peers have for us. The honesty shown will often outweigh the negative impact from the initial event. The fact that if the mistake is denied and it is discovered later it can cause more harm than owning it from the start. When you make a mistake, own up to it. Your actions are your responsibility and trying to deflect blame only casts doubt about your character in those around you. To be a leader, your fellow airmen must trust you. The greatest of faults, I should say, is to be conscious of none. -Thomas Carlyle 7

For one, you could lose your security clearance. For another, you could lose the ability to buy and possess guns. Under federal law, it is illegal to possess a gun while being a user of drugs. Much like a felony conviction, using drugs disqualifies a person from possessing guns. Because of this, Department of Defense policy requires that military drug testing programs notify the FBI s National Criminal Information Center any time a military member tests positive for drugs. Every time someone goes to buy a gun from a federally licensed gun dealer, two things will happen. First, that person will be asked to complete a form that requires answers to 16 questions. One of those questions is whether the buyer uses drugs. Second, the firearms dealer will run a check through the FBI database to check for felonies and whether the buyer has ever been a reported drug user. If a name comes up, that dealer may not sell that buyer a gun. And if the buyer lied about not being a drug user, that buyer committed a federal crime. Bottom line, drug use can and will ruin your military career. It can also have other far reaching consequences that you may not expect. -Maj. Anthony Morfitt
