2 Commanders Commentary Execute by Col. Mark Chidley Commander, 132d Wing Last month I had intended to discuss a message the Commandant of the Marine Corps had for his force in 2018, but the government shutdown changed my focus. Thankfully, it appears that our near term funding issues are resolved and we can start moving forward with our FY18 spending plan. So now I want to review General Neller s message: Execute. I know we aren t in the Marines, although a few Wing members once were. My point is that his message is in many ways universal to all of the United States military. He tells his team that they must strive to be more competent and disciplined. He asks them to focus on three things live the title you ve earned, hone your warfighter mindset, and strive to become admirable Leaders. He stresses that we must be ready for the next fight and we must be prepared. His message is that now is the time to Execute. Two of my three focus areas as commander are readiness and enhancing our warfighter mentality. General Neller said it better than I could and I encourage you to read his message in full (available on the Sharepoint homepage). In particular, his words on leadership struck a chord with me. We should lead like we want to be led. The integrity and example of every leader must be beyond reproach. We must challenge ourselves and those we lead because what we do is not easy and we are better when we are successful in difficult things. And leaders at all levels must live and model the behavior we want our subordinates to emulate. I m sure we have heard many of these things before, but I don t think we can hear them enough. Now is the time to Execute. *The front page -132d Wing Airmen qualify with the M-4 carbine. (SSgt. Michael J. Kelly) To further reinforce that message in a very tangible way, on February 14th the DoD issued a new retention policy for non-deployable Service members. The objective of the policy is to reduce the number of non-deployable Service members and improve personal readiness across the force. Bottom line, on October 1st, service members who have been non-deployable for more than 12 consecutive months, for any reason except pregnancy or post-partum, will be processed for administrative separation. We have to wait for more specific DoD and Air Force guidance regarding implementation of this policy, but the message should be crystal clear to all of us: we must be ready to fight. Lastly, I also want to highlight two themes for March: Women s History Month and Money Matters. In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women s History Month and it is an opportunity to highlight what has changed for women in America. With regard to Money Matters, this is the month to reassess where you are on your own personal financial plan and utilize the resources available to get on course to where you want to go. Thank you for what you do. This drill, I will be at the Operations Group to meet Airmen and answer questions. Have a great drill weekend! 1

3 Chaplains Corner I came across an interesting article this month out of Shanghai. Apparently a woman in southern China went through the luggage x-ray machine with her purse rather than be parted from it. Still images showed a person in heels kneeling among bags. What could make someone risk their health in this way? No one knows for sure but the speculation is that she was carrying her annual earnings home to family in cash during the Lunar New Year holiday; which is common. It s fascinating to see what people are willing to hold on to these days. Money. Grudges. Past mistakes. Past Hurts. And just like this woman, when we hold on to these things we risk our health. She was risking radiation exposure. We risk anxiety, depression, false guilt. Perhaps even worse, we risk missing out on the beauty of the present moment and all the wonder that it holds for us. In my faith tradition, we talk a lot about grace; meaning that we forgive those who don t deserve forgiveness because God has done that for us. But so often, we don t stop to think that this includes us. Perhaps grace isn t just for the other guy. Maybe the person who most needs grace, is us. Maybe we need to let go of the things we have against ourselves, before we put ourselves through an X-ray machine that exposes us to something toxic. As always, your chapel staff is here to help. -Lt. Col. Gabriel Casciato DFAC Menu Saturday Sunday BBQ Pork Chop Chicken Alfredo Mashed Potatoes/Chicken Gravy Green Beans Med. 5 Environmental & Safety Improving the Unit Process Operations: Safety IG- Tommy s Toolshed Wing Exercises! -Chief Master Sgt. Tommy Thompson, IG Office 4 Exercise, is another word for practice. If we can t figure out how to complete the mission during an exercise, how can we be expected to complete it during real life? Take a new look at exercises, don t be scared of them and don t overly prepare for them. Use what your unit already does, every day is a preparation for an exercise. Doing your paperwork correctly, whether it s a profile on an Airman, or TDY orders for a school. Do it correctly each time and the Wing will have no problem excelling at any exercise that comes their way. Doing your job the right way every day is the best way to prepare for any exercise.

The DoD s 2018 theme is Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission. This theme may sound familiar and that s because this was the 2017 theme as well. DoD wanted to maintain this theme because it allows the continued messaging that, regardless of rank, grade, or job specialty, everyone can take action to protect our people. The theme s tie to protecting our mission supports the Department s priorities to enhance readiness and lethality. This theme reinforces the mindset that all members of the military are empowered and have a responsibility to address sexual assault, sexual harassment, retaliation and the behaviors that lead to such indiscipline so they do not detract from mission readiness. Please support your SAPR Team as we have a variety of events scheduled for the 132d Wing and community. Contact your SARC for more information on the events. 6

8 Leadership People or Mission First? 132d Medical Group Superintendent Chief Master Sgt. Kris Rode So which is it--mission first, people always or people first, mission always? As with anything in life there has to be a balance. The mission and the people are equally important and depend upon each other to thrive. You cannot have one without the other. How you take care of people will always be a direct reflection in how they take care of the accomplishing the mission. Our Airmen today are very busy. Whether its high ops tempo, deployments, low manning, resources, civilian career, or family life, we are asking and expecting more and more every day. Today s Airmen are skilled at multi-tasking, swift decision making, and experts at social networking. They are hungry to learn, apply their knowledge and strive to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Leaders must take every measure to develop their full potential. Nothing is more important than accomplishing the mission - except for taking care of the people. Mission sets and career fields vary across our wing. The one constant is the mission. It s easy to get disconnected from the Airmen, stay engaged. Leading Airmen is one of the most challenging yet rewarding feelings. It takes innovative ways to connect and keep People first. We need Airmen to want to stick around, to Go the distance and continue to make this an outstanding Unit. Leaders may need to reset and focus on their professional relationships with Airmen, get involved and mentor. Good ideas have no rank; the newest Airman may have the solution to problems. It could also lead to mistakes, allow your people to fail from time to time. Innovative Airmen will take risks to step beyond the comfort zone if there is a culture and freedom to fail--- ensure balance. Good leaders will see them learning and growing, it s simply the process that comes from making mistakes. The first paragraph of AFI ends with, We are Airmen first, specialist second. Each tier of the enlisted force structure says, know and understand the Wingman concept, Take care of other fellow Airmen. We only have control over ourselves, look at how you lead. Leadership is about our Airmen, empower them, know them and make them first. We need Airmen to want to stick around, to go the distance and continue to make this an outstanding unit. 7
