1 NFPA 79 (A2014) Technical Committee on Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery First Draft Meeting Minutes August Denver, CO Minutes Item , Call to Order The meeting of the Technical Committee on Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery was called to order by the Chair, Mark Hilbert at 8:00 AM on Monday, August 13, 2012 at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Denver located at 3203 Quebec Street Denver, Colorado. Item , Introduction of Members and Guests In addition to the Chair, the following Technical Committee members were present: See the attached attendance sheet. Guests in attendance during all, or part, of the meeting: See the attached attendance sheet. The Chair opened the meeting with welcoming remarks. Self-introductions of meeting attendees and guests were conducted. Item , Approval of ROC Meeting Minutes It was moved, seconded, and voted unanimously affirmative that the minutes of the ROC Meeting held at the Double Tree Milwaukee City Center, Milwaukee WI be approved, as submitted. Item , Approval of Meeting Agenda It was moved, seconded, and voted unanimously affirmative that the agenda of the First Draft Meeting, which is to take action on public inputs submitted for the Fall 2015 revision cycle of NFPA 79, be approved. Item , Selection of New Secretary Chairman Mark Hilbert announced to the committee members that, after more than 30 years as secretary, John Youngblood has retired, leaving the secretary position vacant. Seeing no volunteers Jim Maxfield volunteered to take minutes for the First Draft Meeting until a new secretary is selected.

2 Item , Review of meeting Procedures and Revision Schedule Staff liaison, Mark Cloutier, explained meeting procedures, new terminology, permitted actions the committee can take on public inputs, reviewed the new Terra system and reviewed the revision schedule to the committee. Item , Comments/Questions from Committee Members and/or Guests Staff liaison, Mark Cloutier, fielded several questions in connection with agenda item Item , Task Group Reports Task Group chair, presented updates on their task group activities, including the following highlights: 1. Grounding and Bonding Task Group Report 2. Task Group Report from Chapter 7 and Control and Technology Task Group Report 4. Manual of Style Task Group Report Item , Processing of Public Inputs All public inputs and committee revisions were acted on. Item , Old Business None reported Item , New Business The committee voted on potential locations and dates for the second draft meeting. Committee locations voted in order of preference: 1. Portland, ME 2. Seattle, WA 3. Burlington, VT Committee dates voted in order of preference: 1. July 8 thru July 12, June 24 thru June 28, June 17 thru June 21, 2013 Item , Adjournment The Chairman declared the meeting adjourned on Friday August 17, 2012 at 12:45 PM.

3 NFPA 79 Proposed Task Groups 8/29/2012 Parenthetical References Task Group Luis Bas RT Chair Paul Dobrowsky SE David Fisher M James B. Hayes U James Maxfield E Paul Warndorf M This task group is the result of a first revision (FR) recommendation in PI #80 to remove the parenthetical terms used to describe IEC terms from the body of the standard and a second FR (PI #85) which places them in a new annex. As of the First Draft meeting the proposed annex consists of a list of terms related to grounding and bonding from the NEC and from the IEC Standards. The proposed annex is not limited to just terms related to grounding and bonding but that will be the scope for this task group for the Final Draft meeting. The scope of this task group is to submit comments that will expand the proposed new annex by: Reviewing the proposed terms and develop information that explains the differences or similarities between the terms. Recommend illustrations where applicable. Identify any terms that may have been overlooked and add them to the proposed annex. Control Systems Incorporating Software- and Firmware-Based Controllers Task Group JB Titus SE Chair John Kovacik RT Jay Tamblingson M David Carpenter E James B. Hayes U Dan Neeser M Barry Boggs- U (Interested Party) Paul Dobrowsky SE Andras Szende RT There was much discussion on PI-47 (Log #85) and the TC seemed unable to agree on whether the information provided in (1) (3) can be applied to actual systems incorporating software- and firmware-based controllers. There was additional discussion related to (3). The scope of this task group will be: To determine if the information contained in (1) (3), particularly (3) can be achieved. To identify the document(s) needed to in achieve the requirement. To develop the appropriate comments to revise the existing text to clarify the application of the requirements.

4 Documentation and Drawing Standards Task Group Robert Gruendel M Chair Dino Mariuz M Eric Watson U Barry Boggs U (interested party and has applied for TC membership representing Toyota) It was noted by a TC member at the first draft meeting there may be an opportunity to advance the use of NFPA 79 by updating and further developing the documentation and drawing information which is mainly Annex D in NFPA 79. The TC member, Robert Gruendel, noted the following in an to me after the Denver meeting: The documentation standards which were formerly JIC electrical drawing standards have been rolled into NFPA 79. The most popular electrical drawing program in the US is Autodesk AutoCAD. The problem is that AutoCAD still refers to the US electrical drawing standard as JIC. I believe we should reach out to Autodesk and the other top tier design software companies in order to establish NFPA 79 as the standard that took over for JIC. We should continue to develop the documentation and drawing standards so that it reflects the current technologies. For example, there are electrical symbols that need to be developed for the new technology. I envision this to be a long term task group whose scope with be further defined and members will be added as it moves forward. Initially the scope will be: To coordinate with the NFPA Electrical Engineering and Legal Departments, through the NFPA 79 Staff Liaison, the possibility of reaching out to the machine drawing industry to use NFPA 79 as the basis for the US machine drawing and documentation software programs instead of the discontinued JIC standard. To develop Public Inputs for the next cycle to update and advance the technical documentation information and illustrations in Annex D.
