1 January 2010 District 7090 Newsletter APRIL 2010 DISTRICT GOVERNOR ASKS Have you made a contribution to Your Rotary Foundation this year? April is a good time to review your own and your club s annual giving to the Rotary Foundation. If you have not done so yet, please consider contributing to your Foundation this year now. It does not have to be $100. However small your contribution may be, it will Make A Difference in somebody s life that someone you may never meet will thank Rotary for changing their life for the better. Here are just four of thousands of examples of what ONLY $100 has helped Rotarians provide: 1) One full year of education for a child in Thailand; 2) Dental and medical services to approximately 25 lowincome individuals living in communities near Mexico Inside this issue: April is Magazine Month 2 District News 3 Club & Other News 4 8 March Membership Report 6 Rotary Convention 9 10 Guiding Principles 11 DG Pravin s April Message City, Mexico; 3) Enough textbooks for a school in Villanueva, Colombia; 4) An osteoporosis education program and bone density screenings for six senior citizens right in your own community in the U.S. or Canada. During my club visits, several presidents made a commitment to qualify for EREY Club which requires the club to make a total contribution that amounts to at least $100 per member AND that every member make some contribution (any amount) to the Foundation. A few of you made a commitment to qualify for a SUSTAINING Club which requires that every member make a contribution of $100 or more to your Foundation. Please use the member access option on the RI web site where you can VIEW EREY Eligibility Report and take appropriate action before it is too late. Please make all contributions by May 31 to make sure that the contributors and the club get credit for the year. Also make sure that those new members who join even late in June contribute, as the count is based on membership as of June 30, If you are applying for Paul Harris Fellowship Award please do so as soon as possible. The Rotary Foundation staff gets a high volume of applications in June and may not be able to fulfill your request if it is submitted in June. You will be pleased to learn that Rotarians continue to support the Annual Programs Fund as well as the goal of meeting Rotary s US$200 Million Challenge to ensure polio eradication. In addition, we are working to secure The Rotary Foundation s future by building up our Permanent Fund, and we are striving to strengthen our peace efforts through our Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. It may seem like a lot to ask, and I wish I could tell you that your contributions to these efforts will cure all the world s ills. What I can tell you is what will happen if your Rotary Foundation does not have sufficient resources to support your worthy projects: (continued on page 2).

2 Page 2 DG s Message (continued) Polio will continue to cripple far too many children. Disease will spread more rapidly as fewer people have access to clean water and sanitation facilities. Countless women and girls will never learn how to read. And poverty, disease and illiteracy will persist in undermining our work toward peace in the world. The Rotary Foundation belongs to all of us. It is our greatest resource for doing good, and it is our responsibility to maintain its strength. There are so many in this world who need help, and our Foundation is a very sound investment for everyone! I hope every Rotarian in District 7090 will join me by making a contribution to support the Foundation s programs this year. If you won t help, then who will? If not Now, then When? Remember, The Future of Rotary is in your hands! Your Fellow Rotarian and Friend Pravin Governor Best of Friends District April is Rotary Magazine Month by DG Pravin Every Rotarian in our district is required to subscribe to the Rotarian magazine. Our Canadian friends have a further requirement to subscribe to Rotary Canada which is published four times a year. The Rotarian is, by all means, the most widely read magazine by Rotarians. This publication is a wealth of knowledge and an inspiration for Rotarians throughout the world. I always look forward to my copy of the monthly Rotarian magazine to increase my Rotary knowledge, for ideas from our fellow Rotarians and read about what is new in the Rotary world. The Rotarian brings us news of other clubs and districts, offers ideas for our own projects and helps us feel a greater bond with our fellow Rotarians all over the world. And the RI-mandated content printed in each issue creates a direct connection between the RI headquarters in Evanston and every Rotarian, everywhere in the world. April is Magazine Month, a good time to consider how the Rotarian magazine, an important and valuable member benefit, can help your club s service efforts and how you can share with others the useful information in its pages. Please consider providing a subscription to the Rotarian for your local library so that it gets its own copy. This will ensure that the current Rotarian is on the regular magazine shelves, and past copies are available to the members of your community as well. Clubs also should establish a system of collecting older issues of the Rotarian and distribute them to local doctors offices and other places where the public waits for services. A set of the Rotarian magazines should always be available at your club meetings, to be handed out to guests and visitors. If your club has an Interact and/or Rotaract club please pass recent copies to them as well. Finally, keep in mind that every issue of the Rotarian is on the Google data base and can be searched by key words. Just search for Google on the RI website and that will lead you to the option to search for the Rotarian magazine content from the first month that the Rotarian was published.

4 Page 4 Lincoln Welcomes New Member Barb Mitges Barb Mitges is the newest member of Lincoln Rotary Club and was invited to join by Sue Miszturak. Barb hails from a very small town west of Ottawa where, as the youngest of three girls she was raised in quite non-traditional ways. Chopping wood and hunting duck were only some of the finer things in life she learned. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in elementary school and eventually graduated in Ottawa as an interior designer. After graduating Barb held a number of exciting and challenging jobs at a very young age. Wedgwood fine bone china sent her all across Canada to market to Birks, Eaton s, Simpsons and Ashely s. With Kosta Boda, Barb travelled overseas to buy product, designed in-store shops and worked for Fitz and Floyd china in Dallas. Ten years later, marriage to husband George meant instant motherhood of a 4 year-old and a 7-year-old and moving to Guelph, Ontario, where Barb worked with United Way of Canada. When George went to work with Fresh Express Productions Barb joined him in Pennsylvania where she rubbed elbows with the likes of Jean Stapleton (aka Edith Bunker) and John Ritter at the Totem Pole playhouse. Barb was also on the board of the Renfrew Institute for Cultural and Environmental Studies. She started the Chesapeake Bay Supper as an annual fundraiser to help protect the wetlands of the Chesapeake Bay. It is still going strong today raising necessary funding for teaching programs. Working at a fine jewellery store earned Barb a trip to NYC to attend Rolex School, a distinction that she still marvels at today. Barb and George also owned a Tim Hortons franchise in Columbus, Ohio, where she worked with the Tim Hortons Chldren s Foundation to send children to camp in Kentucky. Five years later Barb s uncle left his lovely home and property in Vineland, Ontario, to her, and they moved back to Canada after a 15-year absence. Since being back in Ontario, Barb has been doing volunteer work with The Antique and Classic Boat Society as well as Rotary Club of Lincoln s Lamplighter Tour. Barb s father-in-law has been a Rotary member in Guelph for more than 25 years, therefore, when Sue Miszturak invited her to join the Rotary Club of Lincoln, it seemed a natural fit. Barb is looking forward to sharing her Rotary experiences with her father-in-law and feels lucky that fate has brought her back to Ontario and her home in Vineland. Join fellow motorcycle-riding enthusiasts and their guests for a fun day of riding, fellowship and fund-raising. We will ride from our home communities (main departure point will be Queensway East Tim Horton s in Simcoe), meeting other participants along the way, and will rendezvous at a selected location in Niagara at noon. Lunch will follow. We ll have a Show & Shine competition, door prizes, good conversation, and more.it will be a great chance to meet and mingle with bikers from across the Rotary District 7090 (Norfolk to Niagara in Ontario, Buffalo to Jamestown in New York). We will also assist the Rotary District in its work for the Polio Plus Project of RI. 5 Page 5 Message for Rotarians: Polio Must Be Eradicated Now Polio survivor tells her story to Rotary clubs.. If we don t rid the world of the polio virus in the next few years, 10 billion people will be infected, Jan Nichols predicted last week at a luncheon gathering of Rotarians. Ms. Nichols, survivor of the insidious disease, was introduced by Roger Britz, president of the Fredonia Rotary Club to guests from the Dunkirk and Westfield/Mayville Rotary clubs. The audience listened intently as she described her struggle with the disease that took her twin brother Frankie in Of the eight children in her class who contracted polio, I recovered. Frankie died. What saved her life, Ms. Nichols said, was the use of gamma globulin and physical therapy, which included using a Hubbard pool, ice skating and doing dances of all kinds that eventually led to her becoming a cheerleader for her school. Ms. Nichols became devoted to the eradication of polio in 2003 when she was given a Rotarian magazine in which was a story about the presence of the menacing disease. I realized the story was not a fake and decided to write and speak about it, she said, and she has been doing so for seven years. Jan Nichols, a polio survivor who was inspired by a Rotarian magazine to stamp out polio virus, was guest speaker at a meeting of the Dunkirk, Fredonia and Westfield/Mayville Rotary clubs. Her message was that the dreaded disease must be wiped out in the next few years. Her hosts were presidents of each Rotary club, from left, John D Augustino, Dunkirk, Ben Spitzer, W/M; and Roger Britz, Fredonia. A major milestone in striking out polio was the 1955 beginning of inoculation of Jonas Salk s vaccine across the United States and other countries, Ms. Nichols noted. To further illustrate her mission, Ms. Nichols said, there have been a couple times when I could have died but I didn t, thus strengthening her determination to do what she can to blot out the greatest crippler in the world. Members of the three Rotary clubs who attended the meeting did so to learn more about their mission to stamp out polio. In 1985, this volunteer service organization made a commitment to immunize the world s children against polio and became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Council on Legislation Approves Continuing e-clubs and More Initiative three years later. The other partners are the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF. In January of 2009, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded US$255 million to Rotary International in the global effort to eradicate polio, bringing the total committed by Rotary and the Gates Foundation to $555 million. Rotary s primary responsibilities include fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer recruitment. To date, Rotary has already contributed more than $800 million to the polio eradication effort. Polio is a mysterious disease, Ms. Nichols said. The symptoms come quickly. She added that at one time polio was a forgotten killer, there are people who are still susceptible from others who carry the virus. Although there is no cure, there is prevention. What is needed is adequate vaccine and funding. In 1962, there were 600,000 stricken with polio in the world; in 1988, Rotary became involved; in , a Nigerian boycott spread to 24 polio-free people by mid 2006, Ms. Nichols noted. According to there are still 64 cases in this year to-date. Noting that there are those who are susceptible to the disease, Ms. Nichols said, Polio remains the greatest crippler, but we re finally going in the right direction to eradicate it. - Ann Weidman, Editor The Council on Legislation council approved continuing e-clubs during deliberations a week ago Monday. After more than an hour of debate, district representatives at the 2010 Council on Legislation voted to make e-clubs a permanent part of Rotary International. The measure, approved by a vote of 430 to 85, received loud applause. This will allow Rotarians with physical disabilities or [scheduling] restraints to meet regularly and conduct service projects through the Internet, said RI Director Antonio Hallage as he presented the proposal to the Council. Representatives from Rotary's 531 districts convened in downtown Chicago last week to consider more than 200 proposals, some that would make changes to RI constitutional documents. 7 Page 7 Haiti Water for Life Celebrates Drilling the 200th Well Rotary Club of Ancaster, Ontario is Host... Completion of a 200 th well in the Artibonite Valley in Haiti, located in the school yard of l ecole Pelican in Verrettes, was cause for celebration recently at a dinner at Michelangelo s Banquet Centre in Ancaster, Ontario. The Haiti Water for Life Program has been in operation since late 1995 and has raised more than $1.3 million dollars for Haiti Water development. Founder of the program, Roy Sheldrick, and the Rotary Club of Ancaster were recognized for their work during its15 years and also for efforts to provide relief to Haiti since the recent earthquake. After about a month of drilling, the capping and installation of the hand-operated pump system will complete the final installation and provide water to the surrounding community. A large turn-out of donors, Rotary Club members and officers from three Rotary Districts, attended a celebration dinner to learn more about the project. Presentations were given by Past District Governors Bob Bruce and Bob Leek outlining their observations of the impacts of the program when they visited Haiti in Major donations have come from individuals, church groups, Rotary Clubs in more than 70 communities in Ontario and Western New York state, and the Walk For Water, which is sponsored by the City of Hamilton Public Works Department each World Water Week. In addition, funds have been provided by private foundations, the Ryan s Wells Foundation and the Foundation of Rotary International. In a video presentation specially produced for the evening, Past International Rotary President Wilf Wilkinson commended the program for the broad base of support it has received and the quality in creating a sustainable model of delivery. The administrative component of the program in Haiti is provided through Hospital Albert Schweitzer, which has been a partner of the program since its inception. Representing the hospital at the dinner were Dawn Johnson and Renold Estime, who are key program leaders in Haiti. They presented a plaque of appreciation to founder Roy Sheldrick and the Rotary Club of Ancaster in recognition of their contribution to the Haitian population. They outlined the work of the drilling crews and the others who carry out the difficult construction, often over barely passable mountain roads. Johnson and Estime were presented with plaques to take home to Haiti for presentation to the three partner Haitian Rotary Clubs, located in Petite Riviers, Saint Marc and Verrettes, that are vital program partners Rotary District 7090 District Governor Pravin Suchak and Rotary Club of Ancaster President Roger Crysler presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Renold Estime to recognize his dedication and efforts in supervising the crews, training the community committees and managing the work of the program. In his comments during the evening, Founder Sheldrick thanked all the hundreds of people who have made the program possible. With its recent expansion into sanitation facilities, it has become even more critical to the communities being served. Roy said that one of his life dreams had been realized with the completion of the 200 th well, however, he acknowledged that the work is not complete and the program must continue until all the people in the Artibonite Valley (now estimated at up to 400,000) have access to clean, safe water. The Rotary Club of Ancaster was founded in 1978 and is affiliated with Rotary International, a collective of more than 33,000 clubs with 1,200,000 plus members in 200 countries worldwide. The volunteer members of the club work to provide community development, youth development and international development through hands-on and financial contributions. 11 Page 11 Rotary s Guiding Principles District 7090 Office Address: 800 Lakeview Avenue, Jamestown, NY Phone: The Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Avenues of Service Based on the Object of Rotary, the Avenues of Service are Rotary s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based: Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club. Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community. International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. The Four-Way Test The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Mission The mission of Rotary International, a worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Diversity and Rotary Rotary International recognizes the value of diversity within individual clubs. Rotary encourages clubs to assess those in their communities who are eligible for membership, under existing membership guidelines, and to endeavor to include the appropriate range of individuals in their clubs. A club that reflects its community with regard to professional and business classification, gender, age, religion, and ethnicity is a club with the key to its future. Moving toward the Future In , Rotary International began developing a strategic plan to guide the organization as it entered its second century of service. In June 2007, the Board of Directors approved the RI Strategic Plan , which identifies seven priorities: Eradicate polio. Advance the internal and external recognition and public image of Rotary. Increase Rotary s capacity to provide service to others. Expand membership globally in both numbers and quality. Emphasize Rotary s unique vocational service commitment. Optimize the use and development of leadership talents within RI. Fully implement the strategic planning process to ensure continuity and consistency throughout the organization.
