I am proud to be a part of this vital community organization. Although it was a challenging year, campaign chairs, dedicated staff, board members and our generous community came together for a successful fundraising campaign that exceeded our goals. And an amazing group of volunteers helped organize and participate in a number of great community events. As a result of our combined efforts, our community and the lives of many who live here has improved. While there is certainly much more work to be done, United Way is up to the many challenges that lie before us as the organization continues to play an impactful role in the community. As of right now I am still very active in giving back to the community by going to various programs around Ithaca to share my story. I express myself openly and honestly while sharing how I am a living example that things get better if you believe in yourself. United Way was a mainstay in showing me how to live a fulfilling life. I first became involved with UWTC while in high school when I participated in the Youth and Philanthropy program. As I worked with the UWTC employees, as well as representatives from different nonprofits, I saw a commitment in them for the mission of their organization that was different from what I had witnessed in the corporate world. These individuals not only believed in their mission but they were passionate about furthering it. I later interned with UWTC following my freshman year of college and working with the many local nonprofits further solidified my career goal to work with nonprofits. I focused on nonprofits all through college and wrote a blog for the University on pursuing nonprofits while in college. I graduated in May 2015 from Bentley University where I earned a degree in Business Management with a minor in Nonprofit Organizations. In June I started in my current position as the Northeast Regional Administrative Coordinator for Samaritan s Purse." 14

Billie downs "I have very fond memories of my experiences as a student in the United Way Youth and Philanthropy program. It was the first real opportunity I had as a student to take ownership over something. The instructors guided us so that we could make informed decisions, but they let us make the decisions. It was an amazing experience and so empowering. It was also rewarding to be able to meet and work with students from other schools; it helped us appreciate different perspectives and be more open-minded. Having to present in front of the board pushed us outside our comfort zones, but gave us a taste of reality as well! As a teacher, I loved to hear about the experiences of my own students who were participating in the Youth and Philanthropy program. Always enlightening, empowering and rewarding. I appreciate and applaud United Way's commitment to provide this unique, hands-on, minds-on experience for our youth to get involved and give back to our community."
