Thatsaid,asatectonicenginetheSanAndreas system isfarmorecomplexthanjusttheparentfault:(1) inreality,that fault locallyisazonethatcomprisesseveralindividualstrands,eachhavingitsowngeologic history;(2)theparentfaultisbutoneofseveralright/lateralfaultzonesthattraversesoutherncalifornia;(3) thoseright/lateralfaultcomplexesthemselvesareshapedbylem/andright/stepsthatmarkcontrac1onaland extensionalfaultzonesthathavetheirownslipratesandtectonichistories,andposetheirownearthquake hazards;(4)theeasterncaliforniashearzoneofthemojavedeserthasbeenshowntobeasignificantplayerin theoveralllatecenozoicstrainbudgetofthesanandreassystem;(5)lem/lateralfaultsofthegreaterjoshuatree Na1onalParkregionnotonlyinteractwithinthedextralsystembutalsomarkboundariesofclockwise/rota1ng blockseastoftheparentsanandreasfault;and(6)asignificanttranstensionalelementofthesanandreassystem recentlyhasbeenrecognizedintheformofthewestsaltondetachmentoftheborregodesertandpalmsprings region adetachmentsystemthatappearstohavecoexistedwiththeparentsanandreasfaultsinceincep1onof thelager5/6millionyearsagoun1lthedetachmentterminatedabout1millionyearsagoduetoamajor reorganiza1onofthesanandreassystem.
