1 Date: January 25, 2018 To: From: Re: ALSC Board of Directors Courtney Jones, Awards Coordinator 2018 Midwinter Meeting Awards Program Report Book & Media Awards: Digital Implementation TF At annual the ALA awards committee accepted proposals in principal for the Excellence in Early Learning Award, and the Media Mentorship Award committees, and asked that terms and criteria be brought before them for final approval. Chair Andrew Medlar to work with both committees to create terms & criteria for the Excellence in Early Learning Award, and the Media Mentorship Award committees. Both will be presented to the ALA awards committee at Midwinter Terms & Criteria for the Excellence in Early Learning Award has been brought to ALSC s executive director to present to Carnegie corporation before being sent to the ALA awards committee. The awards coordinator, Task force, and committee chairs are drafting manuals for the ALA awards committee to review. Awards Manual Revision TF The manual task force completed Wilder manual updates as of August 31 st, and the 2018 Wilder committee is currently working with that manual. The committee had their deadlines adjusted at the request of chair KT Horning: work to be completed and a final report due May 15, Batchelder Award Evolution TF Chair Carol Philips and her task force are conducting a survey about membership wide familiarity with the Batchelder Award. This survey is also going out to publishers as well. Midwinter Preparation Submitted meetings for awards and notable meetings Attended ALA Youth Media Award press conference meeting Proofing press office documents for the Youth Media Awards press conference 2018 Committees Suggestions from the membership via Facebook, twitter, ALSC-L, and ALSC Blog, closed on October 15. Began receiving and pulling books based on nominated title and suggestion lists from Awards and Notable committees 1
2 Communicated with 2018 awards chairs about Midwinter meeting times Sent publishers updated 2018 award committee rosters, since some have moved Acting as liaison and answering awards process and eligibility questions from Committee chairs and PGCs Answering questions via and telephone from the general public about the Awards Programs Sent Midwinter communications to committee chairs to prepare them for the Youth Media Awards announcements Prepared post-midwinter communications in advance of the midwinter meeting to ensure communications to recipients, publishers, honored guests and other share holders are ready Directed the packing of trunks, boxes, and pelican cases by awards intern and temporary program coordinator 2019 Committees Sent correspondence regarding the midwinter meeting Worked with the PGC IV, and PGC II to create the chair orientation materials Prepared and vetted committee address rosters for the 2019 committees May Hill Arbuthnot Lecture 2018 Arbuthnot Lecture Committee has selected host site for 2018 Arbuthnot Lecture featuring Naomi Shihab Nye: Western Washington University and the Whatcom County Library System Held a conference call meeting with ALSC office, committee chair Betsy Bird, Naomi s publisher and the Host site to about terms and deadlines regarding the Arbuthnot Host Site Host Site has received a stipend to begin work on lecture preparations form the ALSC office Lecture title: REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED - Our Lives of Reading & Writing Date set for lecture: Saturday, April 28, 2018 Tickets are available on the Arbuthnot website The host site has begun promotion of the award 2019 Arbuthnot lecture The 2019 Arbuthnot Lecturer has been selected and will be announced during the Youth Media Awards press conference Host Site Applications will go live after the announcement at Midwinter Professional Awards: 2018 Winners (so far): 2
3 Penguin Random House Young Readers Group Award The Association for Library Service to Children has awarded the 2018 Penguin Random House Young Readers Group Award to Amanda Chuong, Princeton Public Library (New Jersey); Patricia Moran, Multnomah County Library (Oregon); Julie Phoenix, St. Louis County Library (Missouri); and Sarah Walker, Ferguson Library, Stamford (Connecticut). ALSC/Baker & Taylor Summer Reading Grant The St. Lucie County Library System will use grant funds to include children, birth to five, in their Summer Reading Challenge and to pilot a Sensory Storytime for children with special needs.this summer, the library will add two new categories to their existing summer program, which currently serves children ages 5-17: Baby and Me, for children birth to two years old; and Read to Me, for those three to five years old. Incorporating the Collaborative Summer Library Program theme Libraries Rock!, the library will encourage children and families to participate in a number of age-appropriate early literacy activities. Maureen Hayes Award The South Carolina State Library will use the funds to enhance the Talking Books Services Art Gallery event, an annual program for students who are blind or visually impaired. The South Carolina State Library Talking Book Services Student Art Gallery features the artwork of Spartanburg School for the Deaf and Blind students and other Talking Book Services students and patrons who are blind or visually impaired. While the event has traditionally been limited to students and their families and supporters, the South Carolina State Library hopes to expand the event to a wider audience with a presentation by Kathryn Otoshi, author and illustrator of several acclaimed books, including Beautiful Hands. Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Special Collections and Bechtel Fellowship Committee have awarded the 2018 Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship to Anne Mlod and Lisa Von Drasek. Other Professional awards news: 2018 Bookapalooza applications close February 1, In 2017 the grant celebrated it s 10 th anniversary which was commemorated in the winter CAL issue. The recipients of the 2018 grant will be announced in March The 2018 Distinguished Service Award recipient will be announced at the Leadership & ALSC meeting on February 10th, The 2018 Light the Way grant will be announced after the committee concludes its deliberations at the Midwinter Meeting. Applications jumped this year by Angela Hubbard s cross promotion of the grant with the dollar general mini-grants. 3
4 The Bechtel Fellowship committee and the University of Florida is looking to loosen the time requirement for time spent at the Baldwin Collection, from 4 weeks, to up to 4 weeks. Scholarships: Seals: Applications currently open. Applications close March 1, Working with the scholarship committee to engage the recipients 2 nd half of Melcher scholarship funds mailed out in November Intern Rebecca Reddinger sent out a survey to Melcher and Bound to Stay Bound recipients from about their experience as librarians at the start of their careers and how they feel supported by ALSC (55% as of 1/22/18 responded) Scholarship recipients received gift boxes from the ALSC office to encourage them in their 2 nd semester Selection committee is ready to begin it s work and has made manual updates. Met with Lorelle Swarder, Director of the office for HR Development and Recruitment (HRDR) & ALA-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) to discuss her plan to provide stipends for ALA and Division Scholarship recipients to attend conference Met with Elizabeth Serrano and Alena Rivers to create a plan to engage Melcher and Bound to Stay Bound Recipients at Annual conferences and develop a scholarship recipient specific mentorship program Monitoring seals inventory at warehouse on a weekly basis Working with seals producer to replenish inventory for the Midwinter Youth Media Awards announcement Working with fulfillment house to create 24 packs in advance of the announcement Worked with ALA publishing to create updated hi-res images of the Newbery and Caldecott medals to use for image requests and publishing documents Processing invoices from producer for accounting and tracking when payments sent In consultation with the Executive Director, working with the rights and permission office on seal licensing by outside parties FY18 Quarter 1 seals sales (Sept. -Nov. 2018): September October First November Quarter Cal Gold 221,000 68, ,000 Cal Silver 64, , , , , ,075,000 4
