3 Opportunity There is a great deal of opportunity for both youth and adults to obtain scholarship money through four scholarship contests. Please remember to promote ALL scholarship competitions!

4 Continuing Education Who is eligible? Applicant must be 18 years of age or older and a current VFW Auxiliary member, or the spouse, son or daughter of a current Auxiliary member. What is the scholarship amount? Four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded each year, one in each of the four VFW Auxiliary Conferences. What is the application deadline? February 15, 2018

5 Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest Who is eligible? - Any student in grades 9-12 who is enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States. - Maximum student age of 18 at time of local entry. - Student must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national. What is the scholarship amount? The first-place winner from each Department (state) competes for national awards totaling $21,000. What is the student application deadline? March 31, 2018

6 Patriot s Pen theme: America s Gift to My Generation Who is eligible? Any student in grades 6-8 who is enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories. What is the scholarship amount? The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The first-place winner from each Department (state) competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each first-place Department (state) winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level. What is the student application deadline? *NEW* deadline: October 31, 2017

7 Voice of Democracy theme: American History: Our Hope for the Future Who is eligible? Any student in grades 9-12 who is enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories. What is the scholarship amount? The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. What is the student application deadline? *NEW* deadline: October 31, 2017

8 Recognition Send a thank you note or card to all who participate in the contest. Host an award ceremony; give the students the opportunity to present their entry. Present a certificate and/or gift to those students who win or place (certificates and gifts are available from the VFW Store). Thank and recognize parents and teachers. Take pictures and ask permission to send a press release to your local paper and/or congratulate the winner on social media.
