While our students continue to achieve high academic success, we also recognize that the number of students with educational and emotional needs continues to grow. To serve these learners, we created a pupil services team comprised of school counselors, and reading and learning specialists. With the addition of two new learning specialists, we are now able to provide educational support at all grade levels at each of our five schools. Working in partnership with our board of trustees, we developed a three-year strategic plan that presents a forward-looking vision that will shape the vitality and success of our schools. I wish to personally thank everyone involved with SMCS s strategic planning process and those individuals who are serving to achieve the task force initiatives. Your dedication, insight and contributions will bring this vital plan to fruition. The achievement of the goals and objectives of our strategic plan is paramount for our schools improvement and success over the coming years. We gratefully acknowledge each of our contributors who has given in support of St. Mary Catholic Schools mission, ensuring that, in partnership with family, Church and community, we can provide a quality Catholic education that is focused on faith, academics, service and personal development from preschool through high school to influence a rapidly changing world. Thank you for giving of yourselves to enrich the educational experience of all of our students from our youngest learners to our twelfth grade leaders. You are making a profound and lasting impact on our students and creating a robust learning community at SMCS, and for this we are grateful! In faith and with God s blessings, Helen Englebert SMCS President MISSION STATEMENT St. Mary Catholic Schools, in partnership with family, Church and community, provides a quality Catholic education that is focused on faith, academics, service and personal development from preschool through high school to influence a rapidly changing world.

4 THE ANNUAL FUND KEPT SMCS ON TRACK With the SMCS Annual Fund theme encouraging donors to ride the Z Train! supporters of St. Mary Catholic Schools responded to an appeal to fuel our students growth through education the journey that never ends. Supporters of Catholic education understand that their gifts are essential to providing a quality education to every student at every grade level. A combination of alumni, school families and community supporters helped to raise close to $178,000 for the SMCS Annual Fund to help cover the cost of educating every student, and provide technology upgrades and curriculum needs. We appreciate our supporters efforts to keep our schools on track Actual Cost to Educate a Student SMCS Tuition Rate Funding Gap Elementary Schools $5,795 $2,775 $3,020 per student St. Mary Catholic Middle School $7,119 $3,595 $3,524 per student St. Mary Catholic High School $8,325 $5,790 $2,535 per student TEST RESULTS REFLECT QUALITY OF SMCS EDUCATION The ACRE (Assessment of Children/Youth Religious Education) test is administered to students in parochial schools and parish religious formation programs in grades 5, 8 and 11 to assess student understanding of Catholic teachings. Students in St. Mary Catholic Schools consistently exceed national school and parish norms. St. Mary Catholic Schools uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests to track the scholastic progress of all SMCS students in grades 1-8. These computer-based assessments use questions of increasing difficulty in the areas of reading, mathematics and language to estimate student achievement, and are administered in the fall and spring of each school year. The results help educators gain an understanding of each child s and each class s current academic level or to compare class- or grade-level performance to the 5.1 million students who took the tests in St. Mary Catholic Elementary School students and St. Mary Catholic Middle School students consistently score well above average on MAP tests. 9 ENDOWED ACCOUNTS GIVE EVERY YEAR One way in which donors choose to support St. Mary Catholic Schools is by establishing an endowment. Once an account reaches a value of $10,000, an endowed fund can be created. On an annual basis, 5% of the account is withdrawn and used to fund a specified need. Forty-six endowed accounts benefit our schools in one way or another, most in the form of tuition assistance. SMCS invites interested donors to contribute to one of the endowed accounts listed below, or to explore setting up a new fund there are many other areas of need for our schools that could benefit from your gift. A new fund of at least $10,000 will begin benefitting the system within 12 months, but we also welcome the establishment of new accounts that will be added to over time to eventually become endowed. Endowed funds are currently held for SMCS at various institutions and foundations, including The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Green Bay, Associated Wealth Management, The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region and Legacy Trust are: Helen Asmuth Scholarship Harold Bachman Scholarship Bergstrom Family Scholarship D. IS OFF TO A GOOD START In a strategic move designed to fund important initiatives well into the future, St. Mary Catholic Schools used a portion of the proceeds from an estate gift and private donation to establish four endowed funds. Collectively known by the acronym F.A.T.E. (Fine arts, Athletics/activities, Technology, Emerging educators), these accounts will provide future funding for initiatives in those four areas that are not covered by the system s budget. They are also a way for SMCS supporters to direct their donations to an area in which they are particularly interested. The fine arts fund supports special projects or needs relevant to SMCS fine arts programming and the Jane Bergstrom Fine Arts Education Center. The athletic/activities fund helps to finance special athletic department needs or projects that are not covered in the system s or the SMCS Booster Club s annual budget. The technology fund supplements funding for technology upgrades, system maintenance and equipment needs. The emerging educators fund was created to supplement the income of beginning educators (in their second through sixth year of teaching) in the form of a bonus for choosing to teach in a Catholic school. By adding more than $110,000 in new donations to existing funds, our F.A.T.E. accounts have grown to $209,000. Distribution of the interest earned on each fund will be determined by three or more SMCS personnel who are familiar with the particular initiative. ACCREDITATION St. Mary Catholic Middle School and our elementary schools are accredited by Wisconsin Religious and Independent Schools Association (WRISA), which is recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. St. Mary Catholic High School is accredited by AdvancEd, the largest community of education professionals in the world. All five schools are joint members of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools. All teachers, specialists and aides meet the requirements of the Diocesan Foundation Catechetical Certification process and are state-licensed educators, and all teachers and specialists hold either bachelor s or master s degrees.

10 BUILDING OUR In early 2016, St. Mary Catholic Schools announced the SMCS Fields of Dreams project, which is paving the way for the further development of competitive athletic facilities on the high school/middle school campus. Re-grading and surface work to create new practice fields for the football and soccer teams started in April and was completed in time for the 2016 fall sports season. The addition of a new softball field is the next step in the overall vision for the campus and will ensure a permanent home for the high school softball team which was displaced when the new middle school was built. Construction of the softball field is underway, with the intention of having it ready for the 2017 season. The plans also currently include the following, which will be implemented as funding becomes available. Softball field seating A canopy over the batting cage that will protect the baseball and softball teams from inclement weather and the sun A building to house the additional groundskeeping equipment; the building will also be used for athletic team gatherings. Financial support to complete the field development project comes primarily from generous gifts from the Jeff and Jennifer Hogenson Family, Scheels All Sports, Marvin and Jayne Voissem, Miron Construction Co., Inc., and the SMCS Booster Club, as well as many other donors and community members. Help is still needed, however, and alumni, parents and friends of SMCS athletics who appreciate the need for these improvements are encouraged to make a donation. THEIR SUPPORT IS MORE THAN JUST A DREAM Jeff and Jen Hogenson, parents of a 2016 St. Mary Catholic High School graduate, were among the initial donors who helped start the Fields of Dreams initiative with a substantial gift. Their generosity was inspired by the belief that competition through sport provides our youth an opportunity to gain confidence, build friendships and develop skills they will use throughout their lives. Marvin Voissem, a 1944 graduate of St. Mary High School, and his wife, Jayne, also feel that the promotion of sportsmanship and teamwork through athletics is a worthwhile endeavor. Harkening back to Marvin s days as a Zephyr, the Voissems gave a generous gift to the SMCS Fields of Dreams project to help ensure that today s Zephyrs have great facilities to enjoy the same opportunities. Together, SMCS supporters from across the decades are making a difference in the lives of our students. Thank you!

SMCS STRATEGIC PLAN: LOOKING TO THE FUTURE During the fall of 2015, The SMCS Board of Trustees and administrative leadership team worked with a professional facilitator to lay the groundwork for a new strategic plan for St. Mary Catholic Schools. Working together to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the school system, the group ultimately came to consensus on this vision for the future: SMCS is acknowledged for its academic excellence and delivery of an exceptional student experience. The system is financially stable (as defined by decreased line of credit, increased revenue and balanced budget) to ensure the long-term stability and continuation of SMCS Catholic education. To work toward achieving this vision, the group identified five primary initiatives, which are to: Advance Catholic education as an investment in developing dynamic Catholics disciples through academic and spiritual leadership Develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies that grow enrollment Establish a financially stable business model Deliver academic excellence Provide an exceptional student experience An SMCS Board of Trustees member was assigned as the champion for each initiative, and five task force groups were established. The groups are gathering data and help develop and implement plans to achieve the goals. The plan was approved at the SMCS Board of Trustees meeting in January 2016 and the development of metrics and action plans continue into the new fiscal year.

17 IMPORTANT RESOURCES St. Mary Catholic Schools income is made up of primarily tuition, parish subsidies and third-source funding. With a commitment to keeping the cost of a Catholic education affordable for families while still providing outstanding learning experiences for our students, SMCS relies on many financial resources. Third-source funding sources include the annual fund and other donations, significant fundraising events such as Jumbo Gumbo and Zephyrfest and grants. Significant third-source funding comes from Scrip, our program for international students and the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP or vouchers) QUICK STATS: SCRIP Total sales * $3,674,690 $$ to families for tuition $116,203 $$ to tuition assistance $33,986 $$ to parish programs $38,312 *A percentage of the total Scrip sales is paid back to participating organizations, and SMCS shares a higher dividend with families and parishes than most groups do. WISCONSIN PARENTAL CHOICE PROGRAM Number of students 100 Average reimbursement per student $7,276 Total state funds $727,644 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Number of tuition-paying international students 12 (one 1/2 year) Tuition per student $10,000 Total funds $115,000 JUMBO GUMBO The 11th annual Jumbo Gumbo took place at Waverly Beach where hundreds of SMCS supporters gathered for an evening of great food, friends and fun! The Dancing Thru the Decades theme got teachers from each campus involved with making entertaining decadesthemed videos that guests voted on to determine the favorite. The event raised nearly $54,000, which went directly to operational expenses. ZEPHYRFEST A sophisticated black-and-white theme infused our 31st annual Zephyrfest gala. The elegant evening featured exciting live and silent auction offerings, fabulous raffles, delicious food and the smooth sounds of Sentimental Swing. This vital fundraiser brought in profits over $320,000, holding steady with the success of previous years. Zephyrfest funds support St. Mary Catholic High School and benefit all five campuses. PROJECT LEAD THE WAY In keeping with its commitment to providing an outstanding Catholic education for students, in the spring of 2016, St. Mary Catholic Schools began plans to implement Project Lead The Way (PLTW) beginning with the school year. Project Lead The Way is the nation s leading provider of K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)-based programs. Its projectbased curriculum and high-quality teacher professional development, combined with an engaged network of educators and corporate partners, helps students develop the skills they need to be successful in postsecondary education and beyond. A visionary group of community professionals with expertise in STEM-related fields or businesses is partnering with SMCS educators to act as resources, help implement innovative ideas and provide support as classroom consultants to support the PLTW curriculum. SMCS developed a threeyear implementation plan for PLTW involving principals and science teachers as well as the advisory group. The plan includes introducing Launch (elementary), Gateway (middle school), and Pathways (high school) components in science and computer science. Modules are being introduced to some classes at each campus each year, with complete implementation and probable expansion completed in the school year. By then, all SMCS K-12 students will have access to PLTW, and additional modules in engineering science and other areas are planned for incorporation at the high school level. To prepare for the first phase, three SMCS instructors attended training sessions during the summer of 2016 to become PLTWcertified, returning to SMCS ready to share what they learned and lead collaboration among their peers to ensure a strong foundation for the program.
