2 The Board of Directors and staff of the VNAIC have completed the next 5 year Strategic Plan for 2011 to This comprehensive plan is a tribute to the strong presence of the VNAIC in the Inland Empire. The plan describes our Mission, Vision, and Values which have not changed for many years. We believe in ourselves and in our ability to provide unparalleled home health care and hospice service throughout Riverside, San Bernardino, and Northern San Diego Counties. This new 5 year plan highlights our strengths and our opportunities in the future but also allowed us to challenge our weaknesses and threats. The VNAIC is the largest Agency in the Inland Empire and has experienced leadership, extensive geographic scope, and innovative patient care. Many opportunities were identified including the increased use of technology, expansion of program diversity, and a long-term vision that home care and hospice will be a major part of the care of future generations of patients will be a year of change and challenge as Health Care Reform is enacted. 3 The VNAIC is celebrating 80 years of service to our patients, their families, and the communities we serve. We have a long history of providing care to patients regardless of their ability to pay, living conditions, or the location of their home. That means that we were seeing patients before Medicare, before MediCal and certainly before Managed Care. In 1928, the Junior Aide of Riverside (today known as the Junior League) commissioned a study to determine what community services were most needed in the City of Riverside. The study recommended that the group establish a Visiting Nurse program and thus the VNA of the Inland Counties was born in We have a long history of providing care to patients regardless of their ability to pay, living conditions, or the location of their home. The first visiting nurse was Marie Berkelew who remained the only nurse providing service in the City of Riverside for 6 years. The Junior Aide women volunteers answered the phones, marketed the program with the slogan A nurse for every purse and raised money so that services could be provided regardless of the patient s ability to pay. By 1964, the VNA was providing service throughout Riverside County and had enough nurses to complete nearly 1,000 visits every month. When Medicare became effective in 1966, the VNA became a certified home health care provider. By 1976, the VNA was receiving so many calls for service in San Bernardino County that the name was changed to what it is today: Visiting Nurse Association of the Inland Counties. 20 years following the original Medicare legislation, Congress added a new benefit,, and by 1994, VNAIC was certified for in all of our office locations.
