2 Message from District Governor: If you have not already contributed or taken advantage of the Jerry Johnson trust matching funds, please consider doing so. An example of this is the RC of Austin Westlake. Last month I had the honor of presenting seven 1 st time Paul Harris awards. It was made possible all due to the Jerry Johnson match. Public Relations: Can t say it enough, but if you did not know, our PR team & district website were rated # 1 in both zones. Pretty big deal. Way to go team! Keep posting your pictures of your club activities and projects to your club Facebook pages as well as to the districts #1districtstrong. Membership: I don t know what happened, but we lost a few members and were back to 27 new members net. Please continue you ask your friends & neighbors to come with you to a project or meeting to peek their interest in Rotary! Last, there is still time for your club to participate in Sharon s literacy / education project to your local or school libraries. She has over two dozen clubs who have made a commitment to the project. Remember, if your club supports her project with a minimum contribution of $100, the Tocker Foundation will match up to $1,000 to the public or school library in your local community. Pretty good deal!! Looking forward to a FUN & exciting year!! Sharon & Bruce Golden 5870 DG / To Rotarians of District 5870 Central Texas, What happen to the cold weather in January? Foundation: Last month, we started the second half of the year right where we left off at the end of Our district members stepped again up as we met our goal for January & we have now contributed over $310,000 ytd!!!! That leads both zones. As of now, were still #1
3 Jerry Johnson Testamentary Announcement! On behalf of the Trustees of the Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust, our most sincere congratulations go out to Tonda Campbell, the newest member of the RC of Killeen Heights, for becoming the 1,000 th recipient of a Jerry Johnson Testamentary Trust match. This match, along with her contribution, also results in her becoming the newest Paul Harris Fellow in District Now in its 8 th year, the Jerry Testamentary Trust Match Program has distributed in excess of $203,000 to match the contributions made by 1,000 Rotarians in Districts 5730 and 5870, and to help them earn a total of 528 first time Paul Harris Fellowships. So far this Rotary year, the Johnson Trust has distributed $28,093 to help 76 Rotarians become Paul Harris Fellows. The trustees owe a great debt to PRIP Ron Burton without whose steadfast help in working through some Rotary Foundation red tape none of this would have been possible, and to our late friend Jerry Johnson whose vision to see what could be possible has left such a huge legacy.

8 CNBC Names The Rotary Foundation on of the World s Top 10 Charities On Giving Tuesday, CNBC, one of the leading consumer and business news media outlets in the U.S., named its top 10 charities in the world, ranking The Rotary Foundation No. 5. Charities were chosen for changing the world while maintaining excellent financial standards. The article highlighted Rotary s tremendous work in eradicating polio. An excerpt of their reporting: They're big and global, with budgets exceeding $100 million and net assets of at least $65 million. Yet these 10 charities manage to do exceptional work throughout the country and overseas, all while maintaining stellar financial management and transparency. The Rotary Foundation works to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace. Using Rotary Foundation grants, Rotary's 34,000 clubs across the globe develop and carry out sustainable humanitarian projects and provide scholarships and professional training opportunities. One of its biggest initiatives aims at eradicating polio through its PolioPlus program, launched in Since then, Rotary and its partners, including the World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have immunized more than 2.5 billion children, reducing the incidence of polio by 99 percent and eradicating it from all but three countries. Constructing Low Cost Shelters using Global Grants For three years beginning January 1, 2017 clubs will be able to use global grants for the construction of low-cost shelters under a change approved by Foundation Trustees in September. However, the construction must be a part of a comprehensive project related to an area of focus. Construction by itself will not be eligible for global grants. If your club is interested in knowing more, please read Constructing Low Cost Shelters using Global Grants that's available from District 5870 website (click here to download the guidelines). Global Grant Scholarship Nominees We happy to report that three clubs Austin, Cedar Park, and Waco have submitted nominations for our Global Grant Scholarship. This $30,000 scholarship is designed to fund graduate study abroad. Interviews to select the winner will be held on Saturday, January 28th at Central Texas College in Killeen. 17 What is Rotary Has Heart? Rotary Has Heart is the over-arching theme each Rotary club can use to promote the work being done in your community. By using a common theme, and common social media, clubs are able to share their good work with others. Together, we can all help our friends and neighbors see the great work being done each day by thousands of Rotarians! When/How To Use Rotary Has Heart? You can use an existing program, or develop a new service project to highlight how your club is showing heart in your community. This is your chance to help build better publicity across the entire Rotary world by working together to promote the good work we all do each and every day. We need to talk about what Rotary does, and make sure we use a unified voice in telling our story. Please use the downloadable jpg images, Rotary- Heart news release (adapt it for use in your club and use the hash tag #RotaryHasHeart on social media. Then, send your news stories, photos, and reports of media placement to the PR Chair so we can tally the results.

26 #100ActsOfGood Children s books in Spanish and in English to a grade school in Reynosa, Mexico. The school is named Ramon Mario Bahena Rodriguez school and looking after this school is a pet project of mine shared with several people in other Rotary Clubs. The current project is to provide books to the school and either have classroom book cases or a library. The school has no library. The book project is not an official project of the University Club yet. It is supported by individual members of various Rotary Clubs providing books and services, e.g. the e-club (Martha Meyers), members of the Austin (Downtown) Rotary Club (Mary Reynolds), members of the University club (Betty Richardson, Zoila Cardenas) and members of the club Rotario Reynosa (Wes Garcia and others). Pictured are Left to Right: Chendo, David Negrette, Hector Lopez, Lolo, Bracho, Ramiro Cienfuegos,Wes Garcia, Cheke, Raul Lopez, and Ramiro Garcia. Missing is Dennis Garcia (Wes son).
27 #100ActsOfGood So when she decided to do her Gold Award project, it was centered around a sustainable way to continue the collection and distribution of books by designing, building and placing permanent book collections boxes in three elementary schools (Canyon Creek, Spicewood, & Laurel Mountain) for the BookSpring organization. She arranged for this project to be a service activity for the Interact Club at Westwood High School, and for all the students at the 3 elementary schools. The Interact students will continue to pick up the books that the elementary students have collected and deliver them to BookSpring. She also worked with BookSpring to make posts on their blog about the project to encourage others to do the same. This collection has already helped over 650 children have books to read and will continue as a legacy long after Ana is gone because of her great organizational skills and her insight to get local organizations involved. Ana personally collected 658 books before the school year started, and since then, many more have been collected from the elementary schools and been delivered to BookSpring. Ana spent over 80 hours developing and making sure this project would be a success and that is true devotion, commitment and service above self. She is an amazing young adult and it is so inspiring to see young people who are interested in finding ways to make a difference every day and inspire others to join them in this desire to help others. Ana will follow in her dad s footsteps when she is old enough to join Rotary because she already possesses all the characteristics of a true Rotarian. What a great future role model. 28 Career Guidance & Cyber Security Jarrell, TX, January 30, 2017 The Rotary Club of Georgetown-Sun City along with the Jarrell High School INTERACT Club sponsors a Career Guidance Program throughout the school year. This exposes students to different promising, long term careers where there will likely be jobs waiting for them after the post-high school education. On Thursday, January 26 th, a Special Agent from the FBI, who is an expert on counterintelligence based in Austin, spoke to about 60 Jarrell High School students about the prospects of Cyber Security as career. He demonstrated how cyber attacks have exploded over the past few years and how it is affecting our government, banking, private businesses and individuals vital information and data. The Special Agent showed the different career paths that students can take to work in cyber security and that the demand in this field far outweighs the supply of cyber experts. About 10 Rotarians also attended this presentation.
29 Pecan Springs Mural Pecan Springs Elementary got a great gift from a major corporation. After sending out a request to find someone to paint a mural on their cafeteria walls for their cafeteria walls, BookSpring found one of their corporate partners that not only would paint the mural but brought 150 of their employees, families and professional landscaping crew to clean out, replant and mulch all the gardens, remove a deteriorating goat pen, Japanese fountain and gazebo, clean up the school grounds and ran off and laminated materials for the teachers. Some of the teachers even came to school on their holiday (MLK Day) and worked with some of the volunteers in their classrooms to re-organize or set up special projects in the. Classrooms. What a great boost for the teachers and the staff and you should have seen the kids' faces when the dragon was unveiled at their knighting ceremony that week. And even though the corporation didn't want any recognition for their incredible gift to the school and community if you look closely in the dragon's hands you will see an Apple and can probably figure out who to thank! And if you get a chance swing by Pecan Springs and see how great it looks.

31 O P E R A T I N V A C A T I O N Thank You for your Service Hoover Family! One of the greatest gifts anyone can receive is an opportunity to thank a soldier for serving and protecting our country and Rotary and the Austin Hotel Lodging Association gets to do it every month with a family from Ft. Hood. Staff Sgt. Robert Hoover, wife Stephanie and children Hayden and Riemann were hosted last weekend at the Hampton Inn Oak Hill by the General Manager Cynthia Tirana. The Rotary Club of Austin and Killeen provide the program called Operation Vacation Ft. Hood and arranged a rent car, free meals, entertainment packages, toys and goodies to let the family know how much Austin appreciates the sacrifices these families make for all of us daily. County Line hosted their Saturday nite dinner with all the trimmings and Super Shuttle provided park passes at Austin Park. Without great partners like these and the Austin Hotel Lodging Association, Restaurant Association and Rotary this kind of event just wouldn't happen. When Staff Sgt. Hoover was asked if his family had a good time he said "Yes ma'am we are having a grand ole time. The hotel was great, the dinner was excellent and the service was outstanding at the county line. We went early to the Austin park play and pizza and kiddos had a blast. Thank y'all so much for the great hospitality." And when I thanked him for his service to our country he answered" No problem-i love doing it. Thank y'all for making America a better and beautiful place." Staff Sgt. Hoover has served twelve years in the military and plans to finish his career at twenty. We are so lucky to have such dedicated men and women protecting us everyday. So next time you see a soldier be sure and thank them. They deserve it!
