1 Bigger Better Bolder DG Jackie Hobal Dear Rotarians and friends, August is Membership and Extension Month Foundation Trustee Chair Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar talks about the importance of membership to The Rotary Foundation. Membership, extension, and contributions all are linked together, and it is every Rotarian s responsibility and honor to work toward these goals as we are Building Communities -- Bridging Continents through Service Above Self, he says. August is a good time to invite a friend to Rotary August is Membership and Extension Month in the Rotary calendar. What will you do this month for Rotary membership? Invite someone as a guest to your club? Send an article to your local newspaper about your clubs projects? Take copies of the Rotarian to your local doctor s office? Mentor a new member? There are many things you can do to help your club attract and keep District 5370 NEWSLETTER members. As a Rotarian we each are responsible for doing something about membership. For more information go to the Membership Development pages of the RI website. Clubs don t just need new members; they need new ideas, new energy, new resources, new attitudes, and new opportunities. Membership growth is not exclusively about new people; it s about progress and vitality and morale. Rotary s early leaders had a passion for growth. During our first decade, the annual membership of Rotary more than doubled almost every year. During our second decade, our increase of Rotarians averaged over 20 percent annually, and our global expansion was underway. What was the reason behind this incredible early growth? The concept was new and unique: an organization of select business leaders and professionals, committed to mutual cooperation, ethical values, and civic pride. We quickly developed a corporate mentality for growth I say the time for Rotary to flourish is now. I say the world is no more cold and uncaring than it s ever been, that business is Issue 2 - District 5370 Jackie Hobal District Governor no more dishonest than it was 100 years ago, and that leaders are no more difficult to find than they ever were. I say that a few degrees of change in our methods will unveil a beautiful new vista for future generations of Rotarians, please consider your corner of the world and identify which of the Rotary habits in your club are not relevant, perhaps a bit dingy and outdated, and distinguish those traditions that are timeless. And then do what we ve done since our infancy: Run to seize the future and shape it, so that we have better communities and a better world. Let me close with this wonderful reminder from our president. Rotary is the best in the world at linking people of goodwill around the globe and then gaining their cooperation and support to make the world a much better place to live and work. RI President Ray Klinginsmith Sincerely, DG Jackie Follow our travels as we visit clubs in District August

2 BIGGER! BETTER! BOLDER! INDEX Community Project for PAT pg 6 Afganistan Update pg 8 Polio Plus Gala pg 10 2 EDITOR S NOTES Hello Rotarians and friends, As the summer slowly begins to fade to fall, (please don t throw things at me, it is a fact) I comtemplate the past few months. For me, a time of great joy and deep sorrow as the circle of life continues. I was blessed with a new granddaughter so sweet and innocent, and then just as quickly life turned and my mother was chosen to come home. These two events have made me wonder about the millions and millions of people who live in dire straights every day of their lives. Struggling with poverty and polio, and malnourishment and dirty water, without even the basic dignities of life. Do these people celebrate every birth of a child with the joy it deserves? Or do they worry about how they will feed one more mouth? Are they given the time to mourn for those who lose their battle with life? Do they appreciate all that person has done for them or is the business of surviving so all consuming to not even allow for a moments reflection for the life that have passed before their eyes? Don t we all deserve the diginity of being remembered and appreciated even if we didn t change the world? I feel in our roles as Rotarians we have the power can make a difference in the lives and deaths of people near and far from us. We have the power to give people diginity. Isn t that our obligation? If we do nothing else in life, we can give those that don t feel they have it, the power to know they are appreciated and valued and that their lives aren t in vain, but that their lives made a difference, no matter how large or small. Cheryl McKenzie Don t we all Rotary Club of deserve that? District 5370 Rotary Employment Partnership The District 5370 Rotary Employment Partnership had a booth in the House of Friendship at the International Convention in Montreal. It provided us an opportunity to share the success of this partnership with Rotarians from around the world and encourage them to consider similar partnerships. One of the speakers at the last plenary session of the Convention was Lieutenant Governor of Ontario David Onley, who is a polio survivor. Much to our surprise and delight he spoke about the Employment Partnership in Ontario, which is modeled after Alberta s. He challenged Rotarians, who have worked so hard to eradicate polio, to now eradicate the high unemployment rate for people with developmental disabilities. We had a lot of interest at our booth throughout the convention, but particularly after his plenary challenge to the many thousands of Rotarians in attendance from around the world. Eric Solash, of the Rotary Club of Strathcona, generously donated a computer as a draw prize and this also attracted many visitors to our booth. Thanks Eric! The winner was a Rotarian from Studio City, California. All in all it was a great opportunity to promote the Partnership and our District. 6 A Vocational and Community Project in Memory of a Departed New Club Member- PAT The Rotary Club of South East concluded their Community and Vocational project May 30, 2010 Sunday titled KNOWLEDGE IS POWER 2010 Spring Seminar for the Temporary Foreign Workers in. This was a joint project of their new member PAT who was inducted at the Rotary Day Dinner celebration last February and her Sponsor, Rtn Victoria Ewert. Pat passed away unexpectedly April 27th and her best friend and co-worker, Rachel Manikkawasagan, who is also a new member of the Club came forward and asked the Club to go ahead with Pat s project as this was what she was planning days before her passing. Rachel and Victoria gathered their thoughts and seek the help of various organizations to support the project. The day started with a heavy downpour of snow and wind which is unexpected in May but some 169 temporary foreign workers braved the bad weather and showed up. Sandwiches, drinks and goodies were donated by Ewert Consulting and Sun Life Financial. Door prices abound as 14 lucky attendees came home with a loot of give aways. Attendees donated $1.00 each and $ was collected and matched by Ewert Consulting. Now, where did the $ go? Victoria was approached by a Filipino foreign worker couple who are having twins in June for help as they have no savings to prepare for the coming of their twins. The money was used to purchased baby supplies and clothes Topics at the Information session were: Immigration Laws in Canada; Banking, Mortgage for temporary residents; Life and Accidental Insurance; CPP and UIC, Income taxes, Labour standards, Driver s license for temporary residents, Permanent residency application etc. The session is about Vocation because it features a number of professional speakers. Each speaker combines great knowledge and expertise in their field, with the ability to explain in clear layman s terms what temporary foreign workers need to know. It is a community project because it is FREE OF CHARGE and is open to all ethnicity and its aim is to help the temporary residents in the Community and it was able to help Walter Zaulda and his wife prepare for the coming of their twins. Victoria asked Fr. Jim of the St. 169 temporary foreign workers braved Theresa s Parish to donate their the bad weather and showed up. basement banquet hall as the venue and asked her friend, Noreen Berkes of Alberta Employment and Immigration office to be one of the key speakers. Other professionals who donated their time to speak on various topics were: Atty. Nathan Po of McCuaig Desrochers LLP, Angeli Agarwan of Servus Credit Union, Tanis Techer and Dana Brooks of Sun Life Financial, Sunny Stephan from a Tax Accounting firm, Susanne Dunsford of AMA Insurance and Victoria Ewert of Ewert Consulting. Submitted by Victoria Ewert A variety of speakers talked about issues concerning the foreign workers. for a boy and a girl. 6 District 5370 Rotary Newsletter

Rotarians from districts in western Canada, Alaska and Washington have been invited to The Success Forum. This exceptional event brings together Rotary Foundation and Rotary International programs. The zone Foundation Coordinator and zone Rotary Coordinator have teamed with the District Governors to present an innovative approach to Rotary education. Who should attend? All club presidents and board members, district leaders, district committee members, the district Foundation team and all Rotarians committed to building bigger, better and bolder Rotary clubs. This seminar is a new approach to Rotary education. Regional seminars bring Rotarians together from different districts. This enhances the prospects for the exchange of ideas, best practices and opportunities to build partnerships for future service projects. We believe that the key to the success of this seminar is to encourage participation and to make the program more dynamic. There will be a number of very experienced speakers and presenters but principally they are discussion facilitators. Participation is a key goal of the Rotary Success Forum. Interaction between the participants and discussion leaders is a primary measure of success. We believe the exchange of ideas, strategies and views from new and experienced Rotarians who draw from their professional and Rotary experience is crucial to successful and flourishing Rotary clubs and Rotary districts. 8 WCSS - WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICES SOCIETY Afghanistan Challenge Good News from Jalalabad, Afghanistan The following Report from PDG Dave Robinson has very good news regarding the Afghanistan Challenge. The Afghanistan Challenge, a project to build a school for 4000 students in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, was our Canadian Rotary Centennial project. Peter Peters, Chair of CRCID, says, You should be proud of the role you played in bringing the fund raising aspect of this initiative to such a successful conclusion. There will be many happy children in Jalalabad when they gather for school opening in September - you were part of making this happen. Thank you and Congratulations! A special thanks from the Committee to the nine districts that surpassed their Share objective. I appreciate that there may still be donations forthcoming, but I think it s time to wrap up these donation reports to yourselves. We will be focusing our efforts on the Public Engagement component of the program and working with the sitting District Governors. With special thanks to PRID John Eberhard, I was able to meet privately during the Montreal International Convention with Greg Mortenson, author of the best selling books Three Cups of Tea and Turning Stones Into Schools. He was very interested and excited about our project and plans to visit the school during one of his upcoming trips to Afghanistan. As we should have surplus monies available, he suggested we first use these funds to ensure an adequate number of teachers are trained and the Committee has agreed. Greg has offered to use his contacts with the Department of Education to assist us. Additionally we are getting quotes to repair the water system at the school, and construct toilet facilities for the teachers. Attached is a picture of the school taken on July 28th. We expect to have the school ready for the first group of 2,000 students on September 20th. We recently learned the school district may try to increase the overall attendance from 4,000 to 5,000. The other day I finished reading Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish s best selling book I Shall Not Hate (a very interesting read by the way), and in it he writes to create change in an entire society, women must be educated and empowered...talking is good but it is not enough. We must act...so what can you do? You can do a lot...you can support foundations who do good work. You can volunteer for humanitarian organizations...you can do many things to move the world towards greater harmony. I believe your efforts and those of the Rotarians in your districts in building this school will move that part of the world towards greater harmony. For me, the opportunity to serve with you in this extremely worthwhile project has been a privilege. Please accept my best wishes to each of you as you continue along your Rotary journey. God Bless! Dear Rotary Colleagues, CONGRATS! FUND RAISING GOAL EXCEEDED! Your efforts resulted in our surpassing the fund raising goal established in January 2009 when you met with PRIP Wilf and PRIVP Monty and agreed to adopt the Afghanistan school as the Canadian Centennial Project. 8 Recently, some of you kindly offered to donate some DDF which unfortunately we were unable to use. We will be looking for Matching Grant opportunities after the school opens next month and hopefully will be contacting you. I feel as if I am so special to have received this workshop."ruth, A Principal in Belize As I read blog entries from participants in the Belize Literacy Project I realize how proud I am of Rotary and this District for organizing this project. I'm also very proud of a group of 30 Alberta teachers who worked in Belize for the first two weeks in August as part of this project. During the second week the teachers worked with all of the secondary teachers in Belize. Five of the teachers who went to Belize worked specifically with teachers and staff involved in distributed learning. 10 Vocational Information New strategic plan is in effect With the start of the new Rotary year, Rotary International s revised strategic plan officially went into effect. The plan comprises three priorities, all of equal importance to Rotary s future: support and strengthen clubs, focus and increase humanitarian service, and enhance public image and awareness. These priorities stem from Rotary s core values of service, leadership, diversity, integrity, and fellowship. The plan specifically calls for emphasizing vocational service and encourages clubs to promote networking opportunities. Both have been integral parts of Rotary activity since the organization s founding. Learn more on the RI website. Project spotlight: Microcredit project helps low income families in Chile The Rotary Club of Talagante, Santiago, Chile, in District 4340, worked with seven other clubs to create a microcredit development bank that provides loans to entrepreneurs in low-income families. The project, which began in 2004 and received funding from a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant, has helped 126 women, all heads of household. Repaid loans have been donated to a community organization called Paul Harris of Talagante, which continues to support the microcredit program. This project is posted as C02282 on ProjectLINK. Please visit ProjectLINK to read about more model vocational service projects or to find an active project to support. 10 Polio Plus Be Part of a PolioPlus Fundraising Gala! This Kick-off Gala (so named before we had ever heard of the Kick Polio Out of Africa soccer ball Horizon Stage on Friday, September 24th is the start of a two-year Polio- Plus Challenge spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove that will involve schools and the community. The long-term goal is not only to raise money for polio eradication but, as importantly, to raise awareness surrounding the devastating disease of polio and its history. Through the variety of activities that we hope will occur, people will come to know more about Rotary and how this humanitarian organization spearheaded PolioPlus, a multimillion-dollar initiative to immunize the world s children against the horrible disease that has killed and paralyzed for 5,000 years. Rotary s commitment was so great that it caught the attention of the World Health Assembly, and soon thereafter, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention became spearheading partners and have worked tirelessly for over 20 years to rid the world of the wild polio virus. The Gala will feature Danny Catt, a biologist, world traveler and internationally published photographer, who will show photographs he has taken around the world over the past 20 years, to illustrate his vision for a sustainable future a future that requires a healthy environment, social justice, and a working economy. Health is a key part this and therefore the wild polio virus must be eliminated. Danny s post-graduate studies occurred in Tanzania as a recipient of a prestigious Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship. District 5370 Rotary Newsletter The target of our Gala is to contribute half of the $75 ticket fee to PolioPlus, and purchasers will receive a charitable donation receipt for that portion. Your club will also receive credit towards its annual goal for The Rotary Foundation contributions through tickets purchased by members. We are pleased to also note that our neighbour, the Rotary Club of Stony Plain, in the best spirit of Rotary is contributing both financial and human resources towards this Gala and our PolioPlus Challenge. For further information or to purchase tickets call or polio@rotaryclubofsprucegrove.org We hope to sell-out in early September, so would encourage you to act fast so as not to miss out on this special evening of unique information, wonderful refreshments, and great fellowship!
