10 Thursday Saturday, June Keynote Speakers Current Clinical Issues in Primary Care Thursday, June 16 The Promise of Primary Care John D. Goodson, MD, FACP Dr Goodson, Deputy Director of the Harvard Medical School Course Development Committee, has been a primary care practitioner for 35 years in the Internal Medicine Associates, a primary care internal medicine practice based at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In his early career as a medical educator, Dr Goodson expanded the primary care training program at the MGH. He continues to teach in his practice and on the ward in patient service. He has organized and taught primary care continuing education for 30 years. Nationally, he has been involved in health care advocacy for the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the American College of Physicians (ACP). He maintains his own private practice, seeing patients per week, and admits and rounds on his own patients. Dr Goodson will briefly summarize the current challenges facing primary care practice and then discuss the many current opportunities to rebuild the primary care workforce. There are aspects of the 2010 health care legislation that are quite favorable and there is a growing public support for our work but improvement is by no means assured. Dr Goodson will present examples of how primary care has been maintained and restored and will go on to assert that in the end, we need to marshal the support of every primary care provider and all engage in a national effort to expand primary care. Friday, June 17 Medicine as a Currency for Peace: The Passion to Bring Health, Hope, and Healing William H. Frist, MD Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist shares his unique experience as a heart transplant surgeon and US senator inspiring people to make a difference wherever they are by helping others, risking failure, challenging the status quo, and above all, having a heart to serve. Frist tackles controversial issues to offer feasible solutions. His simple philosophy for peace, for example, is service. People don t usually go to war against someone who helped save their children, Frist writes. When people see America s more compassionate, humanitarian side, the barriers come down, and peace becomes a viable possibility. Frist writes openly about the values and experiences that shaped his life, and challenges and inspires everyone to find a place where they, too, can make a difference. Senator Bill Frist, MD, served as a senator for 12 years. He has practiced medicine for 20 years and is a pioneer surgeon in heart and lung transplantation. Dr Frist now focuses his efforts on relief work around the world. The 21 st century provides a remarkable opportunity for medicine to serve as a currency for peace. Health transcends political and cultural boundaries, and healing can increase cooperation and harmony in a global society. We as physicians have the opportunity to become heroes by sharing what we have learned here at home and around the world. Saturday, June 18 Diagnostic Errors: Can They Be Prevented? Lisa Sanders, MD Dr Lisa Sanders is a clinician educator in the Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program at Yale University School of Medicine. In addition to her work as a physician and teacher, she writes the popular Diagnosis column for the New York Times Magazine. Her column was the inspiration for the Fox program House MD and she serves as a Technical Adviser to the show. She is the author of the New York Times best seller, Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis. 8 Register by May 5 for only $55
