1 JOB DESCRIPTON Post Title Multisystemic Therapy Child Abuse & Neglect (MST-CAN) Supervisor Service MST - CAN Job Number Grade 12 Responsible to Programme Manager Responsible for Therapists, Support Worker, Family Engagement Worker Job Purpose: To provide clinical and line management leadership of the Multisystemic Therapy CAN team. To work alongside the Programme Manager to develop MST-CAN within Doncaster and to support and embed MST-CAN methodologies. To lead work with families and young people at risk of significant harm and at risk of being placed in care and to prevent the need for children to go into care. To provide line management and supervision to a team of MST-CAN practitioners in line with MST principles, quality assurance processes and licence requirements. To take part in a rota to provide on call support to therapists 24/7. Responsibilities: 1. To provide management oversight for the MST CAN Team. To support service development, planning, co-ordination and evaluation of the Multisystemic therapy CAN service for DCST. 2. To ensure that safeguarding policies are followed at all times and that risk to children or adults is adequately assessed and appropriately planned for, including appropriate escalation where necessary 3. To provide Clinical leadership to the MST team ensuring that the needs of the families/young people are paramount. Attend and represent the Trust at all local, national and regional MST events as required 4. To ensure that all recording and MST- adherence measures are completed. 5. Maintain effective an effective relationship with MST services and the MST UK Network, Maintain effective relationships with partners locally and within the trust 6. Ensure that all assessments are comprehensive, multi-systemic and provide adequate information to determine the causes and correlates of referral behaviours to direct effective treatment within the ecological context. 7. Promote a culture of continual improvement in the quality, diversity and performance management of services. 8. Using theory and evidence based research to support practice in individual and family work including in high risk and complex situations. 9. To work with the Programme Manager to provide professional guidelines and governance of clinical practice within the service and to ensure that all Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) Therapists adhere to the principles of MST,. 10. Carry out audit, policy and service development and research activities in collaboration with the Department for Education and MST UK and MST Services.

With the Programme manager to undertake performance review, to initiate, propose and implement policy and service development changes within the service and guide the change processes to ensure a reduction in frequency of abuse and to promote preservation of the family unit when appropriate. This needs to be done in close collaboration with the MST-CAN consultant, MST-UK and MST Services. 12. Provide appropriate challenge and support targeting systemic barriers to treatment success including physical, practical or emotional issues. Escalate and problem solve any barriers across services and partnerships in health, education, Youth Support Service, Housing, social care, mental health services etc. to ensure the best outcomes for young people. 13. To remain informed of and critically evaluate current research and literature to support evidencebased practice interventions with children and families and promote this perspective in the MST- CAN teams and wider agencies. 14. To undertake project management including complex audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the service to help develop service provision. 15. Contribute effectively to the development of relevant corporate, strategic, and departmental and partnership plans. 16. Work with the Programme Manager to ensure that effective arrangements are in place to ensure that health and safety standards are maintained, and that young people are safeguarded. 17. To ensure compliance with all MST-CAN licence requirements Key Tasks: 1. Conduct weekly group supervision for MST-CAN team to assure adherence to 9 MST principles and the analytic process and the MST-CAN model. Provide supportive and corrective feedback to clinicians to promote desired client outcomes. Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options, including drug testing and treatment in line with the MST principles, taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, carers or group. 2. Provide highly specialist advice, guidance and Supervision to the MST-CAN Therapists in the formulation and delivery of appropriate therapeutic approaches and intervention plans and formulate and implement plans of specialist treatment and / or management of children and young people s mental health problems and employing methods based on current evidence based practice across the full range of care settings. 3. Ensure that cases worked with meet referral criteria, and allocate cases ensuring a balanced caseload amongst therapists. Consultation and joint working with other disciplines and attendance at multi agency meetings and steering groups. 4. Provide 1:1 supervision of Therapists, Support Workers and Family Engagement Worker each month, maintaining appropriate records in addition to weekly group supervision of therapists and support worker. Undertake annual appraisals of staff. 5. To provide management to the MST Business and Admin Support Team (BSO) to ensure that MST- CAN organisational processes are followed. 6. Provide feedback and advice to the steering group on team performance, ensuing effective scrutiny and working effectively with other services. To provide best practice for young people at risk of out of home accommodation. 7. To manage relevant budgets and provide all management duties in line with DCST s HR policies. 8. Plan and organise all aspects of delivery of MST including the management of 24/7 duty rota for families and provide 24/7 duty cover 3 weeks in 4, to therapists. 9. Undertake home visits at the initial stage of a referral being made, in support of the MST workers in and for planned review meetings. 10. Provide direct clinical training to assure clinician competency in all clinical areas relating to the implementation of MST-CAN interventions.

4 DONCASTER CHILDREN S SERVICES TRUST - PERSON SPECIFICATION POST TITLE: MST-CAN Supervisor ATTRIBUTES/ REQUIREMENTS POST NO: ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE HOW IDENTIFIED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING RELEVANT EXPERIENCE Qualified to post graduate level in relevant field, e.g. social work, clinical /forensic psychology, family therapist, mental health nursing/health specialism or relevant equivalent. Experience of leading the delivery of high quality Children s Services provision to families with complex patterns of need, with a high degree of adherence to programme fidelity. Experience of delivering behavioural programmes where emphasis is laced on a high degree of programme fidelity Experience and ability of setting up and development of new services including the creation of operational policies and processes. Experience of effective team and strategic management in relationship to children and families and adherence to performance and HR management processes. Experience as an effective communicator and ability to develop creative approaches to tackle strategic and operational barriers to effective outcomes and treatment success. Experience of leading the development and implementation of performance management systems for the continuous development of people and services. Experience of the ecological theory and application. Sound experience of child development research and its application in treatment.

5 KNOWLEDGE At least two years experience of managing a team/service, and excellent skills in, safeguarding and risk management in cases where there are complex social, emotional and mental health needs Experience of leading the development of innovative services and managing complex partnerships, engaging multiagency commitment and resources to deliver effective outcomes. Significant experience of handling conflict and managing sensitive issues to achieve positive outcomes, including resolving complaints and responding to stakeholders, elected members and counsellors. A detailed understanding of MST theory and approach, including a highly developed understanding of MST CAN Sound knowledge and understanding of legislation, policy and practice guidance relating to children and families and its application to practice including safeguarding legislation. Understanding of evidence based interventions and applying research to practice in health or social care. Sophisticated understanding and demonstrable experience of all aspects of safeguarding and management of risk to children and young people as they relate to the work of the team. Experience and knowledge of issues relating to complex families with experience of child abuse and neglect, or involvement with Social Care, Youth Offending, Mental Health, Police, Education Welfare and Anti-social behaviour services. Strong understanding of the importance of excellence in case recording and file management practice, and ability to monitor compliance and improve performance and provide effective outcome data. Sophisticated understanding of diversity issues and how they impact on delivery of effective services

Ability to champion and promote MST programmes and provide effective leadership and ability to translate broad strategic objectives into practical polices and processes. Ability to provide highly specialist individual and group clinical supervision to MST therapists understanding complex systemic processes and utilising theory in line with MST models. Excellent therapeutic skills including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focussed Therapy and Family Therapy models with children and young people. Ability to develop positive relationships and build confidence and understanding with colleagues, partners and citizens. Experience of analysing performance and outcome data and prepare reports and proposals for practice and service development. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including report writing skills, presentation and training abilities. Able to work on own initiative. Ability to work under pressure and make swift
