1 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Senior II Paediatric Physiotherapist CLINICAL UNIT: Therapy Services BASE: The Portland Hospital for Women and Children MANAGED BY: Therapy Services Manager/ Senior staff ACCOUNTABLE TO: Therapy Services Manager HOSPITAL PROFILE Internationally renowned for clinical excellence, The Portland Hospital is the only independent hospital in the UK entirely dedicated to women and children. Our inpatient and outpatient specialties reflect this, providing clinical expertise in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Women`s Health. The hospital has been consistently growing over the past few years, almost doubling since Our Paediatric wards hold 56 inpatient beds + 11 day case and are equipped with the latest technology to provide advanced medical and surgical care, including a Paediatric Neurorehabilitation Unit and a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit which reflects the acuity and complex nature of the children who are admitted to our hospital. The Portland Hospital has a large number of international Paediatric patients, often funded by relevant embassies. The Portland Hospital is the only fully private maternity hospital in the UK. The hospital provides for both consultant-led and midwifery-led deliveries, having an 18 bedded ward to facilitate this. Alongside this there is a 12 bedded Gynecology and Women s Health in-patient ward. The Portland Hospital also has a large outpatient department for all areas of its clinical expertise, to facilitate continuous care or simpler procedures. This is accomplished through our core set of Positively Portland values that all employees will work to: Greetings, Respect, Teamwork, Initiative, Responsibility and Acknowledgement JOB SUMMARY This post will cover a variety of specialities across paediatrics in order to consolidate experience and provide personal development opportunities. Rotations will be on a 9-12 month basis covering both the inpatient and outpatient services and gaining experience in treating and managing patients with a wide variety of conditions across specialities of: respiratory, neurology and rehabilitation, orthopaedics and musculoskeletal.

2 The post holder will be expected to carry a clinical caseload with support from senior therapists, work within a mutidsicplinary team and support service development projects. They will be expected to provide a high standard of care and present a professional manner at all times. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To provide appropriate and effective physiotherapy intervention to children with a wide range of conditions crossing all paediatric specialities (operating at approx. 70% billable activity per day) To provide a high standard of care to all patients and their families in a tactful and sensitive manner Highlight any concerns to senior staff and or appropriate health care professionals To provide advice, guidance and information to patients, carers, health care professionals and other external agencies To work with MDT and family to develop appropriate discharge plans, liasing with external agencies as necessary to ensure smooth transition of care To assess patient/ family/carer understanding of treatment proposals, gain informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment Maintain accurate, clear and legible patient records in accordance with HCA and CSP standards Participate in departmental data collection To work as an effective member of the physiotherapy and multidisciplinary team To participate in weekend and on call rotas once agreed competent To be actively involved in supervision, CPD, evidence based practice and audit projects in the interest of best practice, personal and service development To represent the department and the Portland Hospital in a professional manner Comply with legislative & hospital policies and procedures Comply with CSP and HCPC standards of practice PRINCIPAL DUTIES: 1. Clinical 1.1 To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of work undertaken. To work within the standards and guidelines of the team, the Hospital, CSP, HCPC and APCP code of ethics. 1.2 To carry out appropriate and accurate assessment and treatment of paediatric patients with diverse clinical presentations and complex needs, utilising appropriate assessment tools. 1.3 To formulate and implement individual treatment programmes based on information from assessment, clinical knowledge and using a sound clinical reasoning process. 1.4 To provide treatment interventions in an adaptable manner where there may be barriers to understanding such as foreign language, sensory impairments or cognitive and perceptual difficulties. 1.5 To apply clinical reasoning, critical thinking and reflection to effectively contribute to team clinical decision making, client diagnoses and/or in identifying the scope of impairment. 1.6 To evaluate intervention and progress through reflection, analysis and outcome measures and document appropriately. 1.7 To support patient centred care across the team, ensuring that patients and their carers are involved in the planning and delivery of their own care and that cultural and linguistic differences and issues are recognised and intervention is adapted accordingly.

3 1.8 To initiate, actively participate, and chair or lead multidisciplinary meetings and case management meetings. 1.9 To ensure plans and expectations for discharge are discussed and managed from the point of admission and that treatment, action plans and family meetings ensure all action points are completed and that a safe and timely discharge is achieved To undertake complex risk assessments in the following areas: Client s clinical risk, environmental risks during therapeutic treatment, moving and handling risk assessment, use of specialist equipment. To advise others on how to manage, or minimise, the risk to the client. For example, to advise on the moving and handling of severely disabled children, the use of specialist equipment and environmental adaptations, to carer s and colleagues To have knowledge of available equipment for use in different settings and to link in with community and educational professionals where necessary to ensure that a child s equipment needs are met To use comprehensive knowledge of other multidisciplinary roles and external agencies to ensure best referral management and achieve best client care To ensure client and service records according to hospital policies. To write reports and therapy programmes and communicate with all relevant parties about clients care. To delegate and monitor the documentation of Therapy Assistants and countersign documentation To reduce personal risks, adapting work practices to minimise risk and follow and develop relevant policies within the team. To support and advise junior staff to manage risk appropriately in their work. 2. Management/ Administration 2.1 To contribute to specific service related projects related to service delivery, quality programmes and education and setting and monitoring practice standards within the Physiotherapy Service. 2.2 To participate in relevant meetings within HCA therapy services including but not limited to staff meetings, MDT meetings, in-service training and Hospital related meetings (can be evening meetings). 2.3 To comply with all policies and procedures and the Health and Safety at Work Act, and ensure that all other members of the Physiotherapy team are aware of their responsibilities. To comply with all policies, procedures and guidelines (including health and safety, infection control and clinical risk management) as indicated. To ensure health and safety issues/hazards, complaints and service issues are brought to the attention of the Therapy Services Manager at the earliest possible time. 2.4 To attend all mandatory training required by The Portland Hospital and HCA and abide by all HCA corporate policies and procedure, rules and regulations. 2.5 To contribute to the maintenance of office space, therapy areas, equipment and stock inventories, including accurate recording of equipment issued to patients. 2.6 To respond appropriately to untoward incidents that may arise, report and escalate these appropriately, keeping line manager and the Therapy Services Manager informed and provide accurate documentation.

4 2.7 To identify own limitations within scope of practice and seek support from line manager for guidance and advice on issues outside of own clinical practice and competency. 2.8 To ensure that clinical practice is in line with national and local Physiotherapy clinical guidelines. To keep abreast of relevant clinical issues and research in the field of paediatric physiotherapy using critical appraisal to determine valid and useful findings that may impact on clinical practice. 3. Continuing Professional Development 3.1 Identify individual training needs with your direct line supervisor to ensure high levels of professionalism and clinical skills. 3.2 To identify limitations within your own scope of clinical practice and seek guidance from your line manager. 3.3 To actively seek continuous professional development and comply with evidence-based practice 3.4 To maintain a current individual CPD portfolio in line with department and HCPC standards including personal and departmental objectives and reflections. 3.5 To receive regular supervision and annual appraisals, identify own training needs and maintain and update a Continuing professional Development portfolio. To utilise opportunities to develop skills and knowledge further, keep up to date with current practice and attend relevant courses. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING Essential Physiotherapy Degree qualification or equivalent HCPC registration CSP membership 2 3 years experience of working as a qualified Physiotherapist within the NHS at least 6 months of which must have been working directly within the field of paediatrics Knowledge of developmental milestones Awareness of adjuncts to physiotherapy (hydrotherapy, posture and seating, splinting) Commitment to own personal and staff development with evidence of self directed learning Ability to organize and manage own caseload and prioritise tasks accordingly Ability to recognize limitations in own clinical skills and clinical reasoning and ask for help Ability to escalate concerns accordingly Ability to demonstrate care and dedication in the treatment of patients and in interaction with all other staff members Demonstrate ability to manage conflict and show adaptable communication skills Demonstrate a clear understanding of clinical governance and risk Ability to recognize hazards and prevent risks to self Ability to observe confidentiality Ability to participate in weekend and on call service Ability to keep legible and accurate records in English Excellent spoken and written English Computer skills (Microsoft word, excel and physio tools) Enthusiastic Reliable and punctual Desirable APCP membership
