Outcomes Recommendations: Continue to collect data and evaluate the trend. Decide if the new Med-Surg team concept is effective for the student s success and meeting learning outcomes. Implement further changes as needed. NCLEX-PN pass rate for January 2016-December 2016 is 93.75%. *December 2016 cohort = 100% B. Retention Efforts: See attached report. Enrollment: Fall & Spring Academic Year: ADN: 35; VN: 9; EMS: 8, Total 52: the numbers have been greatly reduced, compared to prior semesters. C. Distance Education: See attached report. No new online courses will be developed for the ADN Program and have been suspended until further notice. HPRS 2300 Pharmacology continues to be very popular with several sections open and offered each semester. Student headcount is being monitored for efficiency; with a 2 year limit we want students to be able to access the program during the time the course can be accepted by the program. The new VN curriculum requires that all incoming students will take the HPRS 2300 Pharmacology or its equivalent. RNSG 2213 Mental Health continues to be facilitated online. RNSG 2221 Professional Nursing Leadership & Management is facilitated online or blended format. The VNSG 1222 Vocational Nursing Concept online course is under development and is slated to start in fall VNSG 1126 Gerontology is under revision/development and this course can be facilitated online or face-to-face or blended format. VNSG 1219 Professional Leadership is slated to be developed for online delivery in the future. VNSG 1301 Mental Health & Mental Illness is under development for spring This course will be facilitated online or face-to-face or blended format. D. VN Curriculum Committee Report: The VN faculty continues to refine the degree plan. In September 2016 the CTC Curriculum Committee approved a faculty proposed change to the degree plan resulting in a decrease from 50 credit hours to 44 credit hours. Faculty evaluated the duplication of content across the courses and were able to either combine or delete several courses. The last cohort under the old degree plan graduates in August 2017 and the new degree plan will be implemented fall The new degree plan requires two prerequisite courses (BIOL 2401 A&P I, and HPRS 2300 Pharmacology for Health Professions) that replaced two VNSG courses. Requiring these two prerequisites allow for credit transferability into other programs. With the addition of these prerequisites, the program is completed within four semesters rather than the previous three semesters. E. ADN Curriculum Committee Report: Summary of Actions Taken: The following motions were addressed and passed in the ADN Curriculum: September 9, 2016 Motion passed to discontinue offering the compressed ADN Summer curriculum. October 7, 2016 Motion passed to accept changing the dress code to full clinical uniform for Class, Clinical and Simulation lab in the ADN program. November 4, 2016 Motion passed on revision of the Computer Accessibility Statement in the course syllabi to include, but not limited to, computer hardware and software that will support the completion of assignments on the internet, DVD, CD or other electronic delivery. December 2, 2016 Motions Passed: ADDENDUM to Department of Nursing & Allied Health Admission Policy: For students who are non-us citizens, provision of clinical placement is dependent upon the affiliated clinical facility acceptance of a non-us Citizen. Clinical placement is provisional. Therefore, without completion of the clinical rotation there is no guaranteed completion of the course or the program. SBAR for ADN Physical Assessment Form template changes, includes NANDA updates, client history, discharge planning, format is head to toe and patient education nursing diagnosis is required. Changes are authorized at the team level to be specific for the semester requirements. February 10, 2017 Motions Passed: ACEN SPE Master Calendar to be piloted for the 2017/18 academic term, with revaluation for ongoing permanent adaption in May Online courses will be limited to the courses already developed and remaining nursing courses will remain face to face or blended. VN Program Reports: Fall 2016 Cohort - have 26 students that moved on to level 2, 1 student out of the 26 came directly from High School. We have 4 that are struggling; in February 2017 we started the Sim clinical rotation with the group. They are doing very well. They will have Peds and Mother Baby this summer ( 2017). H. ADN Semester Reports: Semester I Coordinator Report: We currently have 32 students who will progress to 2 nd semester. Clinical sites are VA hospice CLC unit C and D, BSW STC-4, Cornerstone Gardens halls, as well as simulation. Some of the activities we have the students do in the classroom setting to promote critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment include: o Clinical Group Presentations on The Value of Team Work. The focus on recognizing the importance and value of team members in patient care to include providers, family, pharmacy, dietary, chaplain, RT, etc. o Clinical Simulations highlight focused assessments and interview. Presentation of respiratory distress with appropriate student responses as first responders. Remediation simulation follow-up prn. o Classroom group case studies - This semester we combined the Healthy People 2020 objectives and QSEN principles application. Students create a website for a fictitious event to support a community effort. The students were assigned to develop a website on a health-related issue that impacts a particular group, culture, or community and tie that in with one of the QSEN competencies. A few examples include: S. R-Singh D. Haug V. King

PTSD and the soldier Genomic testing Halloween Run/ Walk Trick or Treat Sleep Deprivation in the Student Nurse Maternal and Infant Home Safety Course Improvements Inclusion of Grief, Death and Loss at level I based on HESI score performance, all students are competing an APA paper, electronic assignment submissions, and introductions to the EHR. Semester II Coordinator Report: There are currently 41 students enrolled in RNSG 1331 (Principles of Clinical Decision Making), RNSG 1336 (Clinical Nursing II), and RNSG 2213 (Mental Health Nursing). Included in these 41 students are six that are at the Marble Falls Campus. The classroom content is delivered in a face-to-face format with the exception of Marble Falls. The classroom content for Marble Falls is delivered synchronously via a camera system that was recently purchased for this purpose. Second semester is now divided into three clinical rotations one surgical, one medical, and one mental health. One surgical rotation is at Baylor Scott & White on 5 South. On 5 South the students have been included in the unit safety huddles, fall prevention initiatives, and medication education for patients (which included gathering of data). The nurse educator on the unit, Tabitha Titsworth, has developed a Bone & Joint Camp class specifically for the students to attend on their orientation day. This has been a great benefit to the students to have this information prior to actually starting care for the orthopedic patient. A lot of the information she gives is reflected in their daily paperwork in regards to patient education that they are required to do each day. The VA in Temple provides a medical focused rotation for the students. Here they receive a wide range of diagnosis and a lot of opportunities for IV skills, med passes, foleys, and wound care. At the VA the students also complete their OR objectives and utilize the GI Lab for IV experiences. We would like to extend a special thank you to Lisa Bailey at BSW for allowing those students who are unable to go to the VA for their OR rotations access to the OR at BSW. The comments from the students in regards to the staff and the experience are all positive. The Marble Falls clinical group completes their Med-Surg rotations at Seton Highland Lakes. This is a 19-bed facility. There are some concerns about the census being low on several occasions and students having to double-up on patient care. These students must also come to Temple for their mental health rotations as there are no facilities in the area to meet their course objectives. The mental health clinical rotation is on STC 1 at BSW. The entire staff has been very welcoming to the students. Mrs. Pankey, the lead for this rotation, would like to extend a special thank you to Kristina Heath, Charge Nurse for creating an environment on the floor that promotes student interactions and learning. On behalf of myself, Mrs. Brock, Mrs. Pankey, Mrs. Biggs, and Mrs. Campbell thank you for all that you do for our students. We are all better when we work together. Semester III Coordinator Report: Enrollments: Currently there are 31 Students in Clinical (RNSG 2362) and Med-Surgical (RNSG 1347) and there are 32 in OB/Peds (Nursing Care of the Childbearing and Childrearing Family, RNSG 1412). Classroom content is delivered by face to face format and Blackboard and Evolve Learning Systems are used as course supplementation. For clinical the students participate in three separate rotations: Medical Surgical, Pediatrics, and OB. Report: Medical Surgical Rotation is being conducted at Seton Medical Center Harker Heights. We utilize units - 2- West and 2 East. Their observational experiences consist of the Cath Lab, Endoscopy and the OR. The nurses are welcoming and always happy to see the students. They guide the students and are great mentors to them. Rarely do we have to seek out opportunities for clinical skills, because the staff seek out the students. They are always prepared to stand by an assist the students and myself through any procedure we may need guidance on. The nurses also involve the students in the discharge process. Seton s on Line Orientation is available through Blackboard with access to the modules the students need to complete prior to coming to the facility. Thank you, Ms. LaPrade. Pre/Post Conference space is always available to us and offer privacy and adequate space. Unit Manager Stacey always keeps me up to date on all changes and upcoming changes. (Policies & Procedures). Thank you, Ms. Sepeda. Pediatrics Rotation is conducted at McLane Children s Hospital in Temple P. Vasbinder E. Colon

Orientation process was smooth; the only hiccup has been with Epic problems. Their experiences consist of the Medical-Surgical units, Pediatric Intensive Care, ED, Special Procedures, Child Development Center and Simulation Lab at CTC They have been able to find meeting space for pre and post conference; but they are unable to reserve the space beforehand. There have beenn o new requirements. Census has been high and staff has been willing to assist in teaching. Good interactions with students. Obstetrics Rotation is conducted at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center (CRDAMC). The orientation to CRDAMC is very well organized and runs very smooth. All required forms are made available to the students prior to the orientation day. Their experiences consist of Labor & Delivery, Newborn discharge, Lactation consultant, Women s Health Clinic, Mother Baby/Postpartum, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The personnel at CRDAMC are very supportive, receptive and always available to assist and provide us with the best clinical experience. A conference room is available on the clinical unit for us to utilize throughout the day. Semester IV Coordinator Report: Semester 4 Spring Enrollment on the certification date was 20 students. RNSG 2363 Clinical Nursing IV The compressed curriculum (all 3 courses) was offered to 15 Semester 4 students in summer Baylor Scott & White (BSW) 6 North, ED, Cath/EP Lab and Dialysis were the sites for the medical-surgical rotation. Precepting sites were Coryell Memorial Hospital (CMH), Metroplex Health System (MHS, including Rollins Brook Hospital) and Seton Medical Center Harker Heights (SMCHH). All students were successful in the course and on their initial NCLEX-RN Exam yielding a 100% pass rate for CTC Summer 2016 test-takers. The RNSG 2363 Clinical Nursing IV fall 2016 class consisted of 26 students. Clinical rotations were held at BSW on 6 North and the Continuing Care Hospital (CCH). The students also had observation experiences in the Emergency Department and Cath/EP Lab. Due to unit changes and limitations, the rotations in ICU and Rapid Response were unavailable. Fifteen (15) students participated in the preceptorship program. Precepting sites were CMH, MHS, and SMCHH. All students successfully completed the semester. Twenty students began the Clinical IV course in spring 2017 with 11 selected for the precepted rotation through CMH, MHS, or SMCHH. Medical-surgical clinical sites were BSW 6 North and CCH with observations in the ED and Cath/EP Lab. This course also included seven (7) simulation labs which were held on Mondays. Students have had positive statements about these simulated experiences. The Blackboard Discussion Board topics for this course were discontinued this spring and, as a result, the direct patient care hours were increased which allowed more time for the performance of nursing skills, medication administration, and leadership activities. Students continued utilizing the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Review Course (NCSBN) and reported it is a great resource. However, faculty do not have access to the student s scores to obtain statistical data to reflect the effectiveness of the review course. The faculty are presently investigating other on-line review courses. RNSG 2331 Advanced Concepts of Adult Health Beginning Fall 2016, the Medical-Surgical Team has been teaching the course. All students were successful in the fall semester. The course final is the average of the Comprehensive Exit HESI Exam #1 and Exam #2. There is a correlation with the HESI exit and the pass rate for the semester. Last fall, the HESI scores for the students as a whole were lower than in previous cohorts across several semesters. That same cohort is at an 80% pass rate which is lower than previous cohorts. RNSG 2221 Professional Nursing Leadership and Management This course included successful completion of the Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Exam, a current licensure requirement. Students seeking licensure in another state completed an alternate assignment In fall 2016, both an on-line and face to face course was offered. All students were successful. This course was offered only on-line in Spring Nineteen (19) students successfully completed the course on March 10, RNSG 1229-Intergrated Nursing Skills/Articulation: RNSG 1229 is a course to provide only for the licensed LVN or Paramedic. It is the course that they must take as a prerequisite before allowed consideration for admission into the ADN program. Currently that course enrolls an average student per semester and we can admit up to 10 in the fall and spring semesters. Quite often because the students are already in the work force it is difficult for them to enroll full-time in the ADN program so we may only admit 3-5 per semester. Currently a part-time option is not available. I. SNA Report: Committee Purpose: D. Williams Dr. P. Clark

Update: Extension sites Marble Falls and Fredericksburg Department of Nursing Clinical Coordinator Representative Graduates Preparation for entry into practice The Central Texas College (CTC) Student Nurses Association (SNA) is part of the National Student Nurse Association (NSNA) which is the largest independent student organization in the country and the only national organization for students of nursing. For a membership fee a student can participate in this organization which is dedicated to giving student nurses the opportunity to contribute to their nursing education now and assisting them to prepare for future leadership roles. The members become familiar with current professional activities, educational changes and needs, and community health care needs, among other things. More important, though, is the emphasis by the association on direct involvement in these activities from the early planning stages through implementation of programs. The student members are also encouraged by the association to participate in interdisciplinary activities and to continue working with other professional nursing organizations. The CTC SNA posts scheduled monthly meetings and hold elections each semester. Function: The SNA shall coordinate, implement, and participate in college and community professional and charitable activities that promote positive social change. Summary of Actions Taken: 2016 CTC Fall Student Nurses Association (SNA) Events: Oct 12: Job/Educational Fair, CTC DONAH Atrium. 10:00am 3:00pm (Volunteer Opportunities) Oct 15th: 5K Walk Breast Cancer with NALPN, Killeen. Very busy with events: Relay for Life, Blood Drive, and the Fashion Show (24 volunteered); Offered 2 Scholarships of $200. Marble Falls and Fredericksburg are enthusiastic about having an RN program in their communities. We currently have a cohort of six students from the Marble Falls area who are in their second semester. We are currently identifying challenges and solutions to having a program in those rural areas. One of the major needs is to create a faculty body from the community. Report Attached. Currently we have 29 RNs in the Preceptorship program. The precepting sites are Coryell Memorial Hospital System ED and PACU and occasionally the Medical-Surgical Unit; Metroplex Hospital System ICU, CCU, and the Medical-Surgical unit, including Rollins Brook ED, and Seton Medical Center Harker Heights ED and ICU. Student s evaluations of their preceptor, precepting experiences and the facilities have been positive. We continue our memorandum of agreements with all past clinical affiliated facilities. All CRDAMC maternalchild department rotations (mother/baby, LD, NICU, etc.) in the future will be impacted by the Army s Nurse Corp Midwifery course as students will not be allowed on these units during their course time frames. Future plans include establishing agreements with local mental health facilities, including those for observational experiences. DONAH Semester 4 nursing faculty are interested in conducting 12-hour clinical days on Mondays followed by a 4 hour simulation day. Evaluations, both students and faculty, of clinical affiliated facilities have been positive. Clinical policies continue to be implemented and strengthened to reflect current practice and address civility. In spite of faculty vacancies, current faculty have been able to arrange clinical rotations in order for the students to meet their course objective. One shared faculty member was utilized this spring for the medical-surgical course in the Vocational Nursing Program. Graduate is currently employed at Metroplex Hospital and stated that she felt she was very prepared. Definitely see now the nurses are a great influence, especially with LVN students with real time charting and working on the floor. Is very appreciative. Liked the emphasis doing the bed side check report with the nurses as well which helps with the issue that she mentioned at the last Advisory Meeting, not knowing how to utilize the charting system. Other than that it s going great. S. R-Singh D. Haug Dr. P. Clark D. Williams A. Starkovich, RN, Graduate of CTC Department of Nursing,

Report/Concerns from the Chair, CTC DONAH Workforce: WIOA Reports from our Affiliated Clinical Facilities (Include new orientation procedures, unit and conference space availability; current issues; new requirements; kudos, etc ) Department Name Change: The faculty agreed that the old name Department of Nursing was not fitting to our current status or our future plans. The revision was necessary because the EMT/Paramedic programs are currently a part of the department and we expect that other programs will soon be added. Needed Programs, i.e. Surgical Tech (letter of support): We are interested in knowing whether a surgical tech program is needed in the community and if it would be supported by our local hospitals. If the Advisory Committee deems that a surgical technician program would be beneficial, can they provide us with a letter of support? Can the Advisory committee identify any other programs that are in high demand and could benefit from a program offered at CTC? Faculty: As many of you already know, based on conversation or requests for shared faculty, the faculty shortage continues to be an issue in the Department of Nursing. Clinical coverage is always the biggest challenge. Currently there are 3 ADN vacancies which will increase after summer with 1 retirement and 2 possible moves. The VN program has 3 vacancies. We ask that you continue to put the word out for full- and part-time instructors. We are willing to talk about evening and weekend rotations, if needed. ACEN Visit: The ADN program will have an accreditation site visit from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) on September 19-21, Please support our program by: being available for a possible facility visit on Sep 19; providing a letter of support for the ADN program by August 18 th ; and attending the public hearing (date & time TBA). TBON Visit: TBON will visit in fall Enjoy having the students come to them for assistance. There are plenty of funds available for the nursing students from the beginning to the end of the program. Metroplex Health Care System, Rollins Brook Hospital: Thanked Dr. Clark and faculty. Appreciate the working relationship. Student orientation remains the same. The Education Department is moving closer to the Nursing Center in Jun/Jul. Have achieved HIMSS Stage VII and is now a paperless organization. Achieved the Chest Pain and Stroke Certifications and the Safe Sleep Certification for the nursery. Implemented in different units, team nursing concepts so have hired quite a few graduate LVNs to work with an RN; LVN and a Patient Care Tech which are being utilized in the progressive care unit and ED. Looking more now at patient care so that has been successful to rectify some of the nursing shortages and not have to hire as many agency nurses. Are continuing with the Nursing Internship twice a year and are hiring them as GNs and have the Nursing Fellowship as well. Coming up in May/June, which may affect some of the students, is the implementation of a safe patient rubric program where they will be getting in all new lift equipment. May have to plan orientation session for the students. Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center: No Report. Coryell Memorial Healthcare System: There are lots of changes and growing rapidly. Broke ground back in October for a new facility building, an entire new Hospital wing. The current Hospital wing is being remodeled into Assisted Living Rooms. Also building a new OR; adding 4 additional ORs and remodeling the current OR. Adding 16 beds onto the Nursing Home as extended care beds. The expected completion date of the new Hospital facility will be December Also expanded the outpatient clinic as well. Nothing has changed for the orientation process for students. Implemented the OMNI cell medication dispensing unit which will be part of the orientation for the preceptors. Preceptor program has been very successful. Expanded the Surgical departments and have several new specialists: orthopedic surgery, neuro surgery and now doing vascular surgery. The students are getting lots of good experience in those areas. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center: Tabitha Filson is the Academic Liaison and has done a lot of work over the last two months in getting the clinical placements/processes to be more friendly. We have a serious EPIC issue throughout the Temple region and there is a task force team working on that to make it move smoothly. The nurse residency program has done really well. The S&W Medical Center accredited residency was at 82%. The OR is undergoing a big expansion. CCH is doing well and got their Pathways to Excellence in the Nation as they had started their Magnet journey to Excellence. McLane Children s Hospital: Officially started their road to Magnet status. The residency is doing well and they are sitting at 95% retention for the last two cohorts and are down about 88% for the original cohort. They do hire the CTC graduates. They put an emphasis on BSN and are requiring new AD RNs to get their BSN when they are hired. A suggestion is to reinforce our students to get that competitive edge; the more professional and engaged they are as a student, the more they are going to standout when they try to get a job at any facility. Doing some expansions to the Nursing Department, Emergency Department, MRI, and Radiology. M. Rennert mentioned that they are hiring LVNs in the general Pediatric Clinics. Currently they have 3 open positions Dr. P. Clark J. Nelson K. Ingrum H. Rambeau L. Pilkington L. Pilkington M. LaPrade

What is the CTC DON doing well? Are there any suggestions for improvement Graduate and Employer followup Affiliated Universities: Texas A&M University- Central Texas Additional items Identified by Advisory Committee Members Advisory Committee Program Evaluation Form Seton Medical Center Harker Heights: Seton is now a Seton Arden Partnership. We offer Nurse Residency programs and this January it was expanded into the Women s Center and will be offering the Fellowship for the Critical Care areas again this fall. Since it continues to rise service logs continue to grow, this year looking to becoming certified in joint and stoke certification. Seton continues to grow. Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System: Are growing and probably because of this area. They have about 50 vacancies and are hiring. They are the 10 th largest VA in the nation. The biggest gap is Community Living Center. Transitioning officially no-restraints no-lift facility and have safe patient handling equipment in all rooms. In the Living Center, actually goes into the bathroom which goes from the bed, toilet and shower. Doing the gap analysis right now to look at the pathway to transition to Magnet or go down the Magnet journey. With that journey, we will have the same requirements when we hire an Associate Degree Nurse. There will be a time line to receive their BSN. Seriously looking at how to educate their current employee structure and further their education and transition their employees to a higher level: NA to LVN, LVN to BSN and even their EMS, Housekeeping staff to LVN. Will be putting together a partnership meeting and would like to invite DONAH to look at the possibilities. Will be starting their Nurse Residency program in the fall as an accredited one-year program. Certain occupations almost no turnover. Focusing on care transition. Looking at expanding the survey data for students doing rotations in the fall. What the best experience for the profession. Long Term Care Facilities: No Report Copperas Cove Nursing Rehab Cornerstone Gardens Granite Mesa Health Center Hill Country Rehab Indian Oaks Living Center The Meadows Doing a good job. Love the idea of having the students wearing their uniforms during class because it brings a very professional image. Not necessarily CTC graduates, but we do have issues with professionalism and people understanding they are in a professional role and great to instill that while they are in school. There is a lots of hallway chatter with students. Keep reminding them that the hallway chatter is not a place to talk about patients, etc. or discuss other information. Our Accrediting Agency requires us to do a follow-up 6 months to a year after our students graduate and are employed to determine whether they are satisfied with their preparation for practice. The ACEN also wants to have input from the employer of our graduates. We would greatly appreciate your participation in obtaining this information. The learning management system is changing from Blackboard to Canvas this summer. The program has 80 students; 13 students will be graduating in May Besides myself, the program has one full time faculty and 4 adjunct faculty. There will be an overlap with my replacement plus one more fulltime faculty member will be hired. No additional information.
