Mendoza General Updated-State of the College (Dr. Scroggins, President/CEO). Dr. Scroggins stated we are excited about the availability of the Mt. Saint Mary s University program on campus and being a model for the industry. College is doing well. Putting people back to work. He is aware that this is an area where competencies evolve quickly. Have responded to the BRN Accreditation suggestions and several changes have occurred. Continue to emphasize work based learning in our program and campus wide. Participated in our campus accreditation. Approved $200,000, for improvements. 1

2 In addition, our student Health Center continues to receive ways of providing additional community based services to the students. Employee wellness program on campus, including exercise, nutrition, etc. Supports affordable care act. Purpose of Advisory: Assist departments and college in evaluating effectiveness of program and preparation of graduates. Recommend changes to curriculum, facilities, and equipment Assist the program in identifying work experience opportunities Approval of Minutes October 23, 2014 Minutes Live (Real time) minutes will be taken today and approved at Advisory-Driven Program Improvements to date the end of the meeting. Program Update- State of the Nursing Program (Michelle Boyer, DON) Director: Michelle Boyer Department Chair/Assistant Director: Billie Lynes Admission Committee: Chair: Michelle Boyer Curriculum Committee: Co-Chairs: Connie Kunkler and Jamie Hooper Program Evaluation Committee Chair: Arleen Fiorito BRN Visit May 2014 Update to Responses: BRN: 4 Recommendations and College responses (Update) CCR SECTION 1424 (d) Sufficiency of Resources-The program shall have sufficient resources, including faculty, library, staff and support services, physical space and equipment including technology to achieve the program s Michelle Boyer motioned for last year s minute s approval. Committee approved. Explained leadership changes in Nursing Department and Technology and Health Division. Improved utilization of space in HCRC to include rooms for students in all health related programs to study. 2

3 objectives. o Space availability Technology o Denise gave feedback on how well the experience went with Lucinda. o Staff and support services Lucinda is our new simulator for OB. Actual simulation with actual scenarios. We now have a Pyxis machine in HCRC that is up and running. Due to an illness we have been without our student retention specialist. We have been requesting clerical support based on needed use related to increasing workload. (T2P, On-line App support) Billie Lynes requested support from Advisory Committee to increase clerical support. Committee consensus reached. CCR SECTION h)Faculty-The faculty shall be adequate in type and number to develop and implement the program approved by the board, and shall include at least one qualified instructor in each of the areas of nursing required by section 1426(d) who will be the content expert in that area. Nursing faculty members whose teaching responsibilities include subject matter directly related to the practice of nursing shall be clinically competent in the areas to which they are assigned. We have sent requests for 3 additional full time faculty to begin Fall 2016 and are pending approval. Billie Lynes requested committee s support to have additional full-time faculty hired. Committee consensus reached. 3

4 o One full-time faculty was hired Fall of CCR SECTION 1426 (b) Required Curriculum The curriculum shall reflect a unifying theme, which includes the nursing process as defined by the faculty, and shall be designed so that a student who completed the program will have the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to function in accordance with the registered nurse scope of practices as defined in code section 2775, and to meet minimum competency standards of a registered nurse. o QSEN: The overall goal for the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project is to meet the challenge of preparing future nurses who will have the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work. Michelle explained what the BRN was looking for. Currently our curriculum includes the content but the language doesn t show it. Susie Chen explained that the BRN is requesting current models used in the programs. Faculty decided to keep the Betty Neuman Model, but will be adding QSEN language. Minor curriculum changes are ongoing in our program. Faculty are identifying QSEN competencies throughout our curriculum and using QSEN verbiage in our syllabi. Areas addressed by QSEN are Patient Centered Care Team work and collaboration evidence based practice quality Improvement safety informatics. o Flipping the classroom. Basically, students take charge of the classroom with the guidance of the faculty member. Will be trying that to see how it works in our program. Updating the method of teaching in the classroom. 4

5 o Leadership Course (Nursing 9) CCR SECTION 1424 (g) Faculty Responsibility-Faculty members shall have the primary responsibility for developing policies and procedures, planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating all aspects of the program. Grants: (Michelle Boyer reported) Chancellor s Office for the fiscal year o Enrollment Growth Grant (15-179) $160, 937 o Assessment and Remediation Grant (14-180) $68,400 Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development for the fiscal year of o Song Brown Grant $160,000 This has been increased by 40,000. The Song Brown Grant is always used to support underserved students and community populations. Most of our CTA and tutor budget come from this grant. o Song Brown Special Grant 2 year grant for $116, 500. This grant was awarded to us for the development We would like to change our Leadership course to a hybrid course. Consensus reached. Our 4 th Adjunct faculty workshop is scheduled in May Adjunct faculty are encouraged to attend departmental meetings. During these meetings and workshops we encourage input from our affiliates is always appreciated. 5

6 of a Transition to Practice Program. Ann M. Mendoza and Connie Kunkler involved in this grant. Multi-criteria Screening Process for Admission. Michelle explained the process and steps for acceptance. Explained that students are competing their appointments with counselors at this time for final acceptance. Transition to Practice Program. Connie Kunkler explained the program. RN s go through an interview process. 240 hour course that is non-paid. However, they receive a completion certificate at the end and is a way to interview the graduate. Ann Mendoza stated that they are treated just like employees. If it works out, they are guaranteed an interview for employment. Work Experience and Externship Opportunities Alice West. Committee honored Mrs. Alice West who is retiring. She will be handing over the program to Arleen Fiorito. Extern program runs in the Winter and Summer Intersessions. Gave details regarding student scope of practice and skills experience. Paid The screening process has been successful. The top 150 applicants are screened bi-annually by faculty and 120 are validated by counselling. The top 60 are enrolled into the program with alternates as needed. This was developed to assist our graduates who passed the NCLEX exam but have been unable to find jobs. Graduates are qualified for this program if they have their RN license and are unemployed for the first year after graduation. They must have never worked as an RN. The Song Brown Special Grant supports this project. Thanked Dr. Susie Chen for obtaining this grant. 5 students have been accepted by PVHMC and have started. Look to further expand our externship opportunities. Encourage additional facilities to offer non-paid options. 6

7 and non-paid options available. Paid options: 1 unit equaling 75 hours and 2 units equaling 150 hours. Non-paid options: 1 unit equaling 60 hours and 2 units equaling 120 hours. Beverly and CVHP are currently participating in Work Experience Program. College Fair will be on November 16, Donations Marie Smith. and input from affiliates ensued. Mt. St. Mary University Center : Mt. SAC RN to BSN Program Dr. Susie Chen is in charge of organizing this program. Reviewed PowerPoint hand out distributed regarding the program. 19 students have been accepted. Progressing very well. This program is exclusive to Mt. SAC graduates only. Program only has two courses that require a clinical component. PVHMC and CVHP has agreed to provide clinical space. We were contacted by the foundation in September that we have a donor for our program that was a past instructor at Mt. SAC. A wish list has been sent to the foundation and we may receive up to $100,000. ensued. Ann Mendoza gave feedback regarding the impact in the facility. Please encourage time management. Susie said the program is flexible and can adjust. Jeanette Wehrberg from PIH Health is willing to take Mt. St. Mary University students for leadership during Summer because it works better NCLEX % pass rate 7

Summary of Current and Projected Employment Outlook Labor Market Information Data: Data provided by the California Center of Excellence. Refer to green colored handout. Still have a shortage. Health Workforce Initiative Information. Refer to additional handouts in your packet. Recruitment folded handout and NurseTim handout. Please spread the word to adjunct and CTA s. Preceptors can have access as well. Participants receive CEU s for this. LMI data-handout presented regarding jobs available Brochures and Tim (videos) for CEU s Alumni Input Survey results o Employer Survey This is to let you know that we will be sending out an with a link to the survey. This is a requirement by the 8

9 BRN Advisory Input o Graduates Survey Fall 2014 Graduates: Survey was conducted in Spring 2015: 38% Return Rate Completed 6-8 months after graduation. 70%% of our graduates work as an RN 27% are not working Concerned that grads cannot find a job. 23% are working in our health care facilities. Changes in Technology: PVHMC- Have started their pilot with EHR student access. Went well. By Fall all students will have access. Moving to Omnicell by January. PIH-Fully integrated with Allscripts. Now working on optimization. CVHP-Using Omnicell. Are evaluating MediTech and Cerner at this time. OR Hybrid has been built. Use Elsevier program management system as an educational tool. CHLA- Only hiring BSN new grads. Evaluations are sent out to managers for feedback regarding Mt. SAC students. Mt. SAC provides excellent instructors. From the previous grad survey, students asked for T2P and we are now implementing. Still concerned that some students are not finding jobs. However, there is improvement. Percentage only reflects the return information on the surveys. Will review what avenues can be used. ensued. 9

10 Advisory Input (continued) Hiring Preferences and Practices: What are the characteristics/skills sought in new hires? PVHMC-On our magnet journey. We do not make a BSN requirement at our hospital because we serve three college communities. However, BSN educated sets them apart from the A.D.N. s. PIH Health- We hire A.D.N. graduates that are pre-employed at PIH with the understanding that they are on their way to the BSN level. Looking for the nurse that wants to go above and beyond, involvement and professionalism. Believes that the SIM lab is taking away the conversation level of the student with the patient. Would love to do preceptorships in OB, home health areas for the BSN programs. ensued regarding students that already have a BS Degree prior to nursing. CVHP-Sylvia Coleman. Stresses building connection with the patients and family. CVHP uses value-based interviews. What skills are lacking in current applicants or work experience participants? See above comments. Curriculum Review o 4 Year Review All courses are up to date until Summer 2017 except N4 which will be done in the Spring. o Parity Thank you to Advisory Committee for recommendation on Parity. This really helped. All classes have achieved Parity except N4 (OB) which is in progress. Documentation of Program Needs Staffing and Scheduling As we discussed above, we do need additional full-time faculty and Advisory support for this. Currently, we are trying 11

12 to replace a retired faculty from 2010, and leadership changes. Thank you to affiliates for input and support for accommodating our student rotations. Tour of Facilities Professional Development Jondea Orr explained that Room 150 is used for 1 st semester and the courses involved. It is difficult to find time and money for professional development. We do try and attend available conferences when money is available. Five faculty will be going to Elsevier seminar.
